What’s your ‘bucket list’ destination… and how old are you?

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan and finally I am going! (Can’t believe it actually, tears were shed)

Joked to my DH I could ‘die happy’ after and he said I’ll just have to pick a new place. (I have a few in mind!)

Asked my mum what her bucket list place was and she said Paris, seems like one of the most achievable destinations from the UK (and I’m definitely going to book this a surprise for her after hearing this!)

Made me wonder about others and if this is an age thing - I guess people travel more now and distances are more achievable.

Where’s your bucket list destination?

The only thing I’d say about a cruise boat around Norway is : we went to one fjord at midday, and thought it was a shame to see so many huge cruise boats there and the pollution they caused.

deplorabelle · 06/03/2024 07:44

OP you never said how old you were! What do you think an appropriate age is to reach a bucket list destination? If you "tick it off" in your twenties is it less special than waiting until 60? I think it might be.

I'm late forties. Like lots of people I have always wanted to go on the trans Siberian railway and to travel the far eastern former Soviet republics, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan etc. I doubt that will happen now.

I also want to visit pretty much every Scottish, Scandinavian and arctic island but I want to travel without destroying their very special ecosystems so no flying or cruising. When the Norwegians get their fully electric boats online I might do hurtigruten. I wish I was brave enough to sail but I get horrendous seasickness and would be terrified.

62

Verona during Opera season
Iceland - both early in the year to catch the Northern Lights, and for midsummer for the endless daylight.

Would happily go back to Montreal, the Rockies, and most of Germany.

Aposterhasnoname · 06/03/2024 07:46

Well It was Egypt, then Thailand, then the Maldives. Done all of those, so now it’s Cambodia.

@ShowOfHands, I don't think there are any steam sleepers any more - but I did find a trip incorporating German Christmas markets with a steam train.
https://www.greatrail.com/tours/harz-mountains-christmas-markets/

The same website has some lovely-sounding steam rail holidays, mostly in Scotland. No mention of cheese toasties, I'm afraid.

Oh thank you 😊

I had a look at their Swedish one in the middle of the night and was blown away. A cool £3.4kpp. Our usual budget is £30 a night in a tent in Devon. Or a hostel in the Highlands.

I genuinely don't think the holiday I want exists because what I really want is to have been born in a different era.

Everyone saying Japan, do it!!! The yen is so weak at the moment, once you get there it feels less than our daily costs at home. ( family of four, kids 5&8)
There was a good thread on long haul board with a load of tips for those travelling to Japan.
My bucket list is San Francisco and India, but to be honest if we can just keep going back to Japan I am happy with that!

DancefloorAcrobatics · 06/03/2024 08:06

Peru. Hiking to Machu Picchu, visiting Raqchi, seeing Lake Titicaca (because of its name) and the funeral towers at Sillustani.
I've been dreaming about this long before it turned into a popular tourist site!
Been lucky enough to do this back in 2022 - just as the country was opening up again for tourist. (I booked to go in 2020 ...). So it wasn't overcrowded and just one amazing trip.

WoodBurningStov · 06/03/2024 08:06

Lots of places

Borneo
Mauritius
Hopping remote islands in Australia
Thailand
Vietnam
I'd love to see the pyramids in Egypt but can't stand the thought of all those people

I've spent most of my adult life without a passport and am not so bothered.

I don't have a bucket list destination but would like to go on a steam train holiday. The dream is to sit in a Pullman carriage and write/read, wander to the dining car for a sandwich, sleep in a sleeping compartment and watch mountains and lakes out the window. I'm not sure this holiday exists. All train holidays seem ott and fancy. I don't want to dress for dinner and sip champagne. I want tea in a mug and a cheese toastie. I also don't want to speak to strangers.

I'd quite like to go to a German Christmas market. And Norway. And Wales. And Amsterdam.

No interest in Japan whatsoever but my dc (12 and 16) want to go. We joke that DH could take them and I'll go and sit on a train for a month instead.

I'm 43.

Edited

@ShowOfHands Get a Passport and go Interrailing. DH and I are planning a trip for a month later this year. We previously bought and 8 day Transport for Wales Rover Ticket and travelled around North Wales - including a couple of Steam Trains. We're not train nerds but the journey and scenery is all part of the holiday. I'm just arranging a trip with 2 friends around Andalucia using trains.

This sounds crazy but I’ve always wanted to sail down the Congo river on one of the passenger boats. I read a description years ago that stuck with me.

but as a lone woman traveller it’s never going to happen.

TheaBrandt · 06/03/2024 08:55

Been to lots of places for me the dream isn’t visiting in a rush for two weeks. I’d like to live in the south of France for June - September in a beautiful French town where I can walk to the beach and potter about. Doing long haul somewhere for two weeks leaves me cold. Been there done that.

Madagascar. Prohibitively expensive and rather dangerous. I should have gone when I was young and adventurous, when I spent all my income travelling the world and had no fear and no responsibilities. Madagascar slipped through the net then somehow and I don’t suppose I’ll ever go now.

Yes, it's tricky once you need to consider the safety side when you have children with you, making a lot of adventurous destinations not possible.

Maureenthemagicunicorn · 06/03/2024 08:57

Somewhere with a coral reef and sea turtles. I love snorkelling and have seen some fantastic stuff under the water here and in the Med but to go somewhere tropical, see coral and swim with a sea turtle is on my bucket list. I'm late 30s. Might have to wait till DC is grown up!

Chanxex · 06/03/2024 09:05

Mine is Vietnam and has been forever. We were meant to go in 2020 but for obvious reasons that didn’t happen. The flights have now got so expensive during school holidays that I fear I will be waiting a lot longer.

bookteafag · 06/03/2024 09:16

Nowhere because i cant get a passport no matter what i try.😕

Muddywalks34 · 06/03/2024 09:18

Mine is actually the Scottish Highlands, I was never interested when I was younger and have travelled pretty extensively and seen most of the foreign countries that I wanted to. I have teens now so it’s beach holidays for us for the foreseeable, we have taken them on UK holidays but as we enjoy lots of hiking they find it very boring. As soon as hubby retires we plan on doing a month up there travelling round (kids will be in uni at that point)

I've spent a lot of time in the Highlands but the DC can't do longer hikes. As soon as we are able, DH and I are going to do the West Highland way.

I have a passport (took the DC abroad for the first time last year - Paris, Arras and Normandy). I've never considered inter railing. I'll definitely check it out.

HairyToity · 06/03/2024 09:28

I had lots, but DH had a spinal injury a few years ago, which complicates travelling and bank balance doesn't allow a lot of the places.

I've had to reframe my mind. I'd like to visit Ireland and maybe a cruise around Europe. Can't afford either at the moment, but I'm hopeful eventually we'll be able to.

Age 40.

I'm 37 and have agoraphobia 😂

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 06/03/2024 09:35

One of mine was the Inca Trail and Macchu Picchu which I did for my 50th birthday. New bucket list is Costa Rica and Route 66.

ihateexcel · 06/03/2024 09:36

Would love to go BoraBora and the Cook Islands. Also got Malaysia and Galapagos on my wish list.
I used to travel in India (mainly Mumbai) with work a few years ago and I found it ok as a female traveller. I would love to take my husband and kids.
I am 47.
Currently planning 16 nights around Sicily with husband and kids for end of May 2025.

I read multiple people commenting on Twitter the other day saying the train services in Europe can be rather unreliable (as is here, I know!). Not sure if it's true.

If you are with young children, make sure the journey doesn't end up with too many hiccups with added hours of waiting in train stations.

Here's an article from Guardian about experience of interrail. It might be helpful!
