What day do you normally do your grocery shopping and why?

Just interested - I am a terrible housekeeper / meal planner.

I normally shop on a Wednesday as that's my least busy day. Wondering if I'm missing a trick by not doing a 'better' day. I could theoretically do any day if it was a delivery or click and collect

We stopped a delivery and went to aldi to save money. We go on Saturday mornings can't be bothered after work

AlltheFs · 02/03/2024 10:51

DH does it Friday so we have lovely fresh things for the weekend and then a top up on Mon/Tues for fruit and things for DD’s lunchbox (she is at nursery Tues-Fri). Works for us.

We need 2 shops as DD has things like berries that don’t last all week and we don’t have a huge amount of fridge space.

RobinEllacotStrike · 02/03/2024 11:16

I'm 56. I don't have a shopping day & never have.

DilemmaDelilah · 02/03/2024 11:38

I get mine delivered, usually on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday as I am working and my DH is home and deals with it. I DON'T choose Saturdays, Sundays or Mondays or first thing in the morning as I have found they (Morrisons) are more likely not to have what I want - presumably as they will be waiting for deliveries/will have fun out due to everyone else doing their shopping in person on Fridays and the weekend.

watchmeshine · 02/03/2024 11:43

Monday morning after I've dropped DD off at school.

I have the day off and it makes sense to do my food shop, fuel up my car and do any house admin.

FizzyStream · 02/03/2024 11:45

Have a delivery on Saturday morning and do a top up shop on a Wednesday which is my day off for fresh stuff.

Fridaysgirl17 · 02/03/2024 11:49

Thursday morning, I get home delivery for a few reasons, oldest is in school, I get paid so once food is sorted that's great, I also have a 3 year old & don't drive as we live in a very walkable town (working on the driving) & as a single mom it's just easier

IncompleteSenten · 02/03/2024 11:51

Saturday. Just because I started like that and arranged for my shopping to come every week so setting it as a fixed day is easier

Donthideyourlight · 02/03/2024 09:06

Thank you. It seems as if there is no objectively better day for it, so I'll just keep doing it when I'm free.

I will start booking a regular weekly delivery though, as I tend to forget things in the shops. '

Im honestly not a disorganised person at work I swear! It's just this sort of thing I am not great at.

The house is functioning and everyone is fed and clean, but I'm forever doing top up shops and I think it's costing us ££££

You sound very much like I was. We also threw way lots of food that was past its best. I now meal plan. I started off by us making a list of all the meals we like, then meal plan each week from that list, putting those meals on a weekly chart, do a shopping list of what I need for those meals, then do the shopping. I now spend far less on food than I used to, we have very little waste and there’s no standing at the open fridge thinking ‘what can I make for tea tonight’. The mental load is massively reduced! Oh, and I also batch cook things like chilli for at least 1 meal at weekend, making the equivalent of 4 meals worth to pop in the freezer. At any one time, my freezer now has 3x meals worth of 3 different meals in it.

Crunchymum · 02/03/2024 11:58

Delivery every Sunday and this always has lunches for the week, heavy stuff, dinner for Sunday + a few days.

I do small top up shops probably every other day (just for things like fresh berries / fresh bread etc although by Wednesday I usually need to buy some dinner ingredients for Thursday and Friday)

I do batch cook things like curry / chilli / bolognese and always have a supply of frozen chicken breasts [I always look for yellow sticker chicken in M&S] so there is always something to defrost for dinner that is relatively healthy.

Saturday is always eat out / take away / (beige) freezer dinner / supermarket meal deal.

SquigglePigs · 02/03/2024 12:04

We get a delivery on a Sunday night to set us up for the week.

I'll usually then do a small top up shop later in the week for more fresh stuff.

If we have guests for the weekend we might get another delivery on a Friday or (now the minimum order for delivery has gone up to £50 from £40) a click and collect (min order £25).

Decafflatteplease · 02/03/2024 12:10

Sunday and Thursday here. Sunday is ocado home delivery first thing on Sunday morning then can get it away before church/get something in the slow cooker.

Thursday for top-up shop as it's usually food for the weekend

popandchoc · 02/03/2024 12:11

Get a delivery on Sunday so i have all the stuff for packed lunches etc while i am working.

NorthernGirlie · 02/03/2024 12:13

Sunday - then I prep work breakfast and lunch for the week and batch cook at least 1 thing (curry / bolognaise / pasta sauce etc) and top up the freezer

AlwaysRoomForMoreDogs · 02/03/2024 12:13

We have a delivery on Friday so we’re stocked up for everyone being home more over the weekend, and then another delivery on Tuesday to top up.

LastnightIDreamedofManderley · 02/03/2024 12:14

We always get click and collect Friday nights. I think just because it’s then the weekend so we’re not having to faff about with it during the weeknights where we have work the next day.

Peekaboobo · 02/03/2024 12:16

I do mine on a week-day because where I live the shops are full of retired people on the week-end.

I literally see my neighbours staying in all week long and then going out to do their shopping on the week-end.

I feel like shouting "there's nothing in the shops at the week-end that isn't there in the week, you're not missing out on anything!"

How dare retired people go to the shop at the weekend. 😅

Monday, because that is the day Tesco delivery gave me when I was CEV in lockdown, must change it to a Friday but I keep forgetting.

I'm 56. I don't have a shopping day & never have.

Me neither and as pp said I just go most days because I like going

lyriccat · 02/03/2024 12:23

Every Saturday

Waitingfordoggo · 02/03/2024 12:26

I shop in Aldi on a Monday. I do my meal plan for the week on a Sunday night and then buy everything we need for it on Monday so we’re sorted for the week . I only work two hours on a Monday so lots of time for it. I like it because it makes me feel organised and set up for the week.

I didn’t used to have a ‘shopping day’ so used to go most days for little bits and bobs but that worked out expensive and restricting because it was usually in the small local shops eg Co-op. I’m spending less now I go once a week. (Obviously there’s still the odd time I’ll need to pop into a local shop for an item or two but way less than I used to).

LaChienneDesFromages · 02/03/2024 12:30

Friday morning delivery here. It’s my day off and it is lovely to have a stock of fresh food in for the weekend. Our cleaner used to come on a Friday as well which was doubly lovely, but she has shifted to earlier in the week.

Although, with two adults, three teens, two dogs, and a cat, the grocery hoard swamps my kitchen table, and takes ages to put away!

SomethingDifferentt · 02/03/2024 12:30

Twice a week.

Wednesdays for a main 'big' shop as that's my day off. Then a top up shop on a Saturday morning at 10.30...only because ds3 has swimming lessons and swimming is right next-door to a Lidl, so we go straight afterwards.

Plus, ds then gets a Lidl bakery as a post-swimming snack so he's always thrilled with it and more than happy to go 😂
