What day do you normally do your grocery shopping and why?

Just interested - I am a terrible housekeeper / meal planner.

I normally shop on a Wednesday as that's my least busy day. Wondering if I'm missing a trick by not doing a 'better' day. I could theoretically do any day if it was a delivery or click and collect

Yes jade, I'd definitely go with a Tuesday if I was retired! I think I ended up in a shop one random Tuesday for stuff for work and it was very peaceful and plenty on the shelves.

I think I'm going to start doing the delivery on a Saturday morning and either go in person to aldi on Wednesday or another small delivery

Friday morning and Monday morning- food delivery using a saver delivery subscription. 2 small shops, saving a fortune.. but I WFH and get deliveries for 8-9am as kids get themselves to school now.

Sunday morning with free parking. Get into Sainsbury's at 9:45, standing in the queue for self-scan checkout by 10:00

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 02/03/2024 09:21

I'm another one that lives 5 minutes walk away from a few supermarkets.

I'll often walk up in the morning before work to get some fresh air - they both open at 7, Lidl can have some good reductions at that time.

Or I may go sainsburys at 6 ish for evening reductions.

I bought a trolley a few years ago and it's a game changer - I barely ever drive to a supermarket and if I do I usually combine it with picking daughter up from work.

AuntieMarys · 02/03/2024 09:21

I go every 4 days. Meal plan all the time

ThreeRingCircus · 02/03/2024 09:22

Monday, because that's my day off and then we're all sorted for the week. We may nip to a shop on a Friday evening or Saturday morning if we need more bread or milk for the weekend.

mitogoshi · 02/03/2024 09:22

I go most days as I hate big shops but we do often pop in together on Saturdays (we aren't buying wine honest Hmm)

Invisimamma · 02/03/2024 09:22

Wednesday because dp is off and he can deal with it 🤣.

Ewoklady · 02/03/2024 09:23

Sunday and then I get bits during the week

Whereshallwelivee · 02/03/2024 09:25

Luckily we live V close to an Aldi, we only eat fresh veg, fruit and meat so dh pops in every couple of days.

I find meat from aldi, especially mince goes off reallt fast.

If you're a terrible meal planner, why not use something like Gousto or Hello Fresh? You could potentially have five days of dinners delivered at the start of the week, then have a grocery delivery on a Saturday for weekend food, lunches, etc...

We have two home deliveries - Sunday night which sorts us out for all the weekday meals and lunchboxes then one Thursday night for weekend food. It means I only have to plan for a 4 days ahead at a time which I prefer.

This seems like a good idea.

We have a delivery at weekends, either Saturday or Sunday, but always need top up shops.

AhBiscuits · 02/03/2024 09:29

Monday as that's my day off work.

TheCompactPussycat · 02/03/2024 09:30

DH goes first thing on Sunday morning.

Thanks - I did try Hello Fresh but didn't find the producer very nice? Is Gousto nicer?

Thursday as I only work in the morning. We live in rural Spain so no online deliveries in our area. We usually go to 1 supermarket, the bakers and the "UK" shop.
We always meal plan and try to make sure that we get everything we need because its a ballache to do a top up shop.
Once a month we go to Costco to get laundry stuff, toilet and kitchen rolls ect. Also get the massive sacks of dog food ( ours is on a prescription diet ) that last just over a month.
I always have some UHT milk , tea bags, strong flour ect in stock so that if we cant get to the shops for whatever reason we wont starve.

hauntedvagina · 02/03/2024 09:40

@Donthideyourlight I like it. Good variety of meals, meat is good quality and produce lasts well.

midgetastic · 02/03/2024 09:45

Top up shops - it's not the day you choose it's your shopping list

Meal plan the whole week

Analyses your past shopping receipts to look for patterns

Or if you can't plan a whole week ahead plan to do 2 shops and shop for 3/4 days at a time ( to a list based on the meal plan )

Itwasfinetillitwasnt · 02/03/2024 09:59

I shop online every 10 days it makes me meal plan and really think about what I'm buying and definitely saves me money. I changed from weekly on a Wednesday to this when tesco changed the delivery plans (January 2023). I can now do a shop for 2 adults, 2 teens, two with afrid and one with allergies for £70 every 10 days (I was spending the same daily amount in 2020 and with food prices going up its definitely a save). We eat a lot made from scratch but use a lot of frozen vegetables, also have milk and bread in the freezer (which I know is not for everyone).

Donthideyourlight · 02/03/2024 10:01

Thanks midge - I'm sure it's a bit of both!

Friday afternoon food delivery… means we have meals planned for the week and snacks - if they run out then no snacks during the week

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 02/03/2024 10:03

Also agree my weekly food shop delivery helps stop the last minute ohh I’ll grab that chocolate!!

devildeepbluesea · 02/03/2024 10:03

Whenever I need to and have time. Most often a Sunday morning. I don’t do delivery - I enjoy food shopping and prefer to choose my own alternatives.

Roundaboot · 02/03/2024 10:03

Tuesday. I think I started doing it when I had deliveries and it was cheaper midweek.
I do click and collect now but have stuck to Tuesday out of habit and also it means that I can do meal planning and the online order at the weekend when I have time. It also means that Monday ends up being leftover night when we just eat whatever is in the fridge/freezer so we reduce wastage that way.

KCSIE · 02/03/2024 10:04

Meal planning and ordering Thursday night, delivery Friday. Then we've got plenty of food in for the weekend and all the Friday night treats 😀
