What day do you normally do your grocery shopping and why?

Just interested - I am a terrible housekeeper / meal planner.

I normally shop on a Wednesday as that's my least busy day. Wondering if I'm missing a trick by not doing a 'better' day. I could theoretically do any day if it was a delivery or click and collect

Most days one of us pops in to get a few things. Probably not the most economical way of doing it. Can't be bothered with the drama of meal planning and big shops.

YouBoggleMyMind · 02/03/2024 10:06

Monday evening straight from work to avoid my MIL and so it doesn't impinge on my other 2 short days off and my weekends.

Toblerbone · 02/03/2024 10:06

I get a delivery. Currently on a Thursday as I wfh that day, but it varies (because my wfh day also varies). I find it much easier to meal plan with a delivery.

Thank you. It seems as if there is no objectively better day for it, so I'll just keep doing it when I'm free.

I will start booking a regular weekly delivery though, as I tend to forget things in the shops. '

Im honestly not a disorganised person at work I swear! It's just this sort of thing I am not great at.

The house is functioning and everyone is fed and clean, but I'm forever doing top up shops and I think it's costing us ££££

Sounds like you see it as your job to keep the house running. You should share responsibilities.

Yes jade, I'd definitely go with a Tuesday if I was retired! I think I ended up in a shop one random Tuesday for stuff for work and it was very peaceful and plenty on the shelves.

I think I'm going to start doing the delivery on a Saturday morning and either go in person to aldi on Wednesday or another small delivery

This really works for a lot of people especially families, I know. They say it cuts down on extra shops. The only thing which is a pita is if they don’t have some items so just tick no substitutions box.

PheobeBebe · 02/03/2024 10:10

Thursday evening - it's the last day of my working week, and my work is close to the shops. I find its relatively quiet and by doing a scan and shop it's not too much trouble. I can go Fridays on my day off if needed, but like to keep that free for seeing friends etc.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/03/2024 10:11

The thing for me which is great about deliveries is the time and money you save getting it delivered. Yes, you pay for deliveries but they’re excellent.

SgtJuneAckland · 02/03/2024 10:12

Friday delivery as DH is at home cleaning the house. Also just seems nice to have fresh things for the weekend, but that's probably in my head

Nannyfannybanny · 02/03/2024 10:13

Thursday, Lidl. That's when the new leaflet comes out. I can have a look through, decide what I am getting. This week we had to go on Wednesday because of GP, phone appointment. It completely threw me out! I hadn't checked my stock cupboards. Last week of the month,is 10%, off shopping,do I stock up on stuff like toilet paper, big bags of dog food.

gingercat02 · 02/03/2024 10:13

I do online. Always Friday afternoon (don't work Tuesday or Friday afternoon) or Saturday morning. Then we are fully stocked for the weekend.
I pass a Lidl, a Co-op, and Sainsburys on my way home, so I'm not shy of a top-up shop if I need one

mamaduckbone · 02/03/2024 10:13

Wednesday, as it's Dh's day off and he does it. Top up at the weekend

SgtJuneAckland · 02/03/2024 10:13

Also means I do the ordering and meal planning (I do ask what people fancy for dinners that week) and DH takes it in and puts it all away, so it feels like more of a joint effort

Elsewhere123 · 02/03/2024 10:21

Do you have a stock system? I have a big whiteboard and a system of two of most used stuff. Once you start using the second one, write it on your whiteboard so you order it next shop. Training other family members to do it is er challenging.

I do Sunday afternoon plus a Sat m and s for Sat night, just as that is when I have the time. I am changing to a Monday night as one of ds's club nights is moving to then and it's 30 mins from home so plan on dropping off doing shop in that town when the club is on then collecting ds after shop. Cool bags at the ready!

DeepestDarkestRiver · 02/03/2024 10:23

I do the shop in-person at Sainsbury's on a Sunday morning, arriving at 9.30 for the 'browsing' time and done about 10.30. That way I have fresh stuff for most of the week. I have never found any online delivery place that would choose the same fresh produce that I do, so prefer to do it myself. About once a month I do an ocado shop for bits I can't get at Sainsbury's, and we usually have to pick up something once or twice in the week from an express shop because Sainsbury's will often be out of something on the Sunday.

Taylormiffed · 02/03/2024 10:25

Any day. I get a delivery once every week or so and pop in to the supermarkets on foot as we live in town.

XiCi · 02/03/2024 10:26

I get my food delivered on Thursdays because its cheaper for a mid week delivery pass and also means I'm stocked up for the weekend

Maddy70 · 02/03/2024 10:27

Everyday here but i dont live in the uk. Bread etc doesnt have preservatives in here so if its bot bought on the day its instantly stale

Houseplanter · 02/03/2024 10:28

When I was working I had a Tesco delivery plan and had a delivery every 3 or 4 days. Didn't have to plan far ahead and everything fresh.

Now retired I shop Mondays, with a top up later in the week when I'm out and about.

bornak · 02/03/2024 10:28

Nothing has a long enough date on it for me to do a shop once a week. It's probably every 2/3/4 days here depending on what we buy.

Trickymikki · 02/03/2024 10:29

Hi, I do mine on Thursday mainly because LLYDL change their stock and I browse the centre sections, sad I know. I then pick up a few things on Saturday at Sainsburys as it feels good on a Saturday to also have a coffee out as well.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 02/03/2024 10:31

Delivered every Tuesday morning as we have to WFH due to school run.
Once a month go to Aldi for certain products, go Sunday when it opens as that's when it quieter.
I have a weekly menu planner spreadsheet so I know what we're buying.

afaloren · 02/03/2024 10:35

Click and collect on a Friday morning. We make an effort to cook a new recipe each Sunday so I want fresh stuff in for that, but don’t want to go on a Saturday.

Augustus40 · 02/03/2024 10:36

Self employed and in general I get less work Thursdays so I go Thursday mornings every week.

Butteredtoast55 · 02/03/2024 10:46

I go after church in a Sunday....early service so I'm normally there by 10. I work long hours in the week and prefer Sundays because the food lasts longer throughout the week, although I would much prefer to go another day. In school holidays I usually go on a Monday/Tuesday and top up for the weekend on a Friday.
