How soon did you drive on the motorway with children?

DP has recently passed their driving test and started driving the motorway route to work this week. We've a holiday booked for 2 weeks from now that driving would make easier, but is doable by train. It's pretty much a motorway journey door to door.

I'm not a driver and I find the concept of driving terrifying. Especially on a motorway, where if something goes wrong then the likelihood of someone dying is much higher. I have an issue with my visual processing which means I really struggle to work out movement (I can't really judge when it's safe to cross roads), so basically all road skills seem alarmingly impossible to me. I also am undergoing treatment for PTSD relating to DS2's prolonged stay in NICU, and have a lot of intrusive thoughts about him dying. All of which combined means that basically my ability to risk assess in this scenario is zilch.

How long were you driving before you felt comfortable taking children with you on the motorway? Particularly if you learned driving later (DP is 38). The DC are 5 and 1. DP feels more confident with every drive, but does acknowledge that motorways are frightening and is happy to take the train as this holiday is supposed to be a celebration of a year since DS2 was discharged from hospital, and me stressing about the drive is not really in keeping with the spirit.

As soon as I passed my test DM made me drive on the motorway for an hour. A couple of weeks later she accompanied me as I drove from London to Cardiff.

This was 17 years before I had dc though. I couldn't drive home from the hospital though, as I'd had a C Section.

If you're and your partner are nervous about both driving and babies, take the train to your holiday. There's plenty of time to work up driving confidence later. But motorway driving is comparatively simple. Just faster.

12 years lol passed 12 years ago and only been on the motorway once driving from Berwick upon tweed to Edinburgh. No kids with me. Not a motorway kind of person!!

Newer drivers are probably safer. More recently aware of laws, more alert and nervous for changes from other motorways

I'm sure your DP would be OK. Though in his shoes from what you describe I'd take the train for your sake.

Motorways are actually safer than most if not all other roads, despite the fact that about 25% of all drivers should not hold a licence.

Could you use A roads to drive to your holiday destination? Maybe do that if it makes you feel better.

Also motorway lessons are a good idea or ask an experienced driver just to accompany new driver on a short drive on motorway (a few junctions then back) to pass on a few motorway tips.

Not sure if said already. Can DP drive, on his own, on the motorway this weekend for a little bit and check how he feels about it? Then decide together then on.

I am also a non-driver (F31) and I wouldn't feel confident driving with little ones on the motorway straight away either. Maybe a couple solo practice runs/months later? But if your DP is confident... 🤷‍♀️
