This morning I noticed a funny smell in my kitchen , I thought maybe it was the drain, or something turned

I have a clean house, very tidy and kept clean

I have checked everywhere I can possibly think of! But I cannot figure out where this horrid smell is coming from ?!?!

It smells like rotten milk/ baby sick , i thought maybe my daughter had spilt milk/ cereal but I have checked everyyhing and everywhere, cupboards in the kitchen, the washing machine, dishwasher , drains, boiler, fridge, frezer EVERYWHERE!

I can even now smell it when I walk into the house, I've been on my hands and knees looking under everything , pulling everything out, going around smelling everything!! I have checked all thebrools in the house , sofa , toy boxes etc And I still have no idea and am unable to pinpoint where this awful stench is coming from 😭😭

I am now concerned I'm going to come across something awful!! Although I've literally no idea where !!!

We had a grim smell in our kitchen. I re washed all the pans from the cupboards…long story short, husband found a live rat living under the cupboard 🤦‍♀️🤢It had squeezed in through a 2inch gap and had been eating the dog biscuits from dog bowl . It had also dragged a small blanket from the dog bed in through the gap !!!

Little bastard. Ergh makes me itch. They can get into the house through pointing being weak. They are determined fuckers.

SkaneTos · 29/02/2024 21:26

I agree with @Dogskidsdogs . It's probably from somewhere in the fridge. We had the same problem in my house.

Good luck!

GrossEncountersoftheTurdKind · 29/02/2024 21:29

I had this. It drove me mad as the smell seemed to move around the house. It turned out to be my partner's slippers!

Willowsands1997xx · 29/02/2024 21:33

@GrossEncountersoftheTurdKind sorry but couldn't help but laugh out loud 🤣🤣

Ha ha! It was rancid! Took me weeks to work it out!!!

daylilies · 29/02/2024 21:36

Where do you keep your eggs?
We were driven mad by a smell, turned out that one of the eggs at the bottom of a bowl on the side had cracked. Really foul stink.

SecondUsername4me · 29/02/2024 21:38

We had similar once, turns out it was a very old flask of hot chocolate we had made for a walk, then ended up getting forgotten in the spare bedroom when we dumped the bag in there after the walk. It was there at least a month before we started smelling it.

It really was hideous 🤢😫

When we had exactly this problem it was a blocked drip tray on the fridge. It was located behind the fridge and low down. Smell was rotten milk. A weird mix of fetid and sweet.

This happened to me too!
Awful bacterial smell.
Partner nor neighbour (called in to hel) could help to locate it until ….

I pulled out the fridge and found the drip tray was full of stinking water/food bits.
Cleaned it out, no probs since.

Keep the drainage hole inside the fridge (at the back) clear and clean. Small squirt bleach down it occasionally.

If you can’t find the drip tray, consult handbook!

Brrrrrrrrrritscold · 29/02/2024 21:42

Once had a fridge that was leaking water from the back into a little tray, it stunk, just like baby sick. Drove me made until I found it!!

birdglasspen2 · 29/02/2024 21:43

Drip tray for fridge you won’t smell it in the fridge but you should make sure the drainage hole at back of fridge(internal) is clear. Then pull fridge right out and look at the back of it for tray. Tray is remake and can be cleaned. Smells exactly like you describe!

menopausalmare · 29/02/2024 21:47

Another vote for the drip tray in the fridge. My friend had an awful silage smell in her kitchen, she even called the plumber out. Was a manky drip tray.

Wizzadorra70 · 29/02/2024 21:54

Have you got a coffee machine? The drip tray on mine has a really rancid smell if left for more than 24 hours.... I use soya milk and now rinse the tray each time I've made a drink otherwise it's all I can smell when I walk in the house.

Omg I don't have a dog or dog biscuits or a dog blanket or even a strange smell, BUT I am now too scared to even go near my kitchen cupboards 😱🤢🤮😨 🤣

apapuchi · 29/02/2024 21:59

Could it be a tea towel or cloth that someone has used to wipe up milk or similar and hasn't rinsed out or put on to wash? Just another thought as to something that happens in our house 🫣

SeatonCarew · 29/02/2024 22:03

Look for a dead mouse in the overflow catcher in the back of the fridge (pull it out to look). Is the smell suspended in mid air? Warm air rises over the back of the fridge,

QueenOfHiraeth · 29/02/2024 22:06

We had a terrible smell once and it was cat food. One of the pouches in an outer box was punctured and festering. Thanks Aldi!

NIPTqn · 29/02/2024 22:08

Pendant light sockets. Fishy smell due to ageing electrics.

DeadBod · 29/02/2024 22:31

We had the smell coming from the back of the fridge. The tray was full of liquid that was almost jelly like. Once clean, it was totally fine but the smell hung around my nostrils for ages.

This!! Check the back of your fridge.

gotohellforheavenssake · 29/02/2024 22:50

We had a horrid smell in kitchen on return from holiday once. Turned out whoever last ate bacon put the half pack back in the drawer with the cling film after wrapping it, rather than in the fridge. And there it stayed, for 2 weeks, in a heatwave. 🤢

The drawer had to stay outside for weeks, being routinely bathed in bleach, to get rid of the smell. And everything in the surrounding cupboards and drawers had to be binned or washed numerous times.

mumda · 29/02/2024 22:53

Can anyone else smell it?

I've had something up my nose that was really gross. I'd smelt something funny a bit like a rotten mouse but no one else smelt it. I'd cleaned everything twice.
Eventually I realised it was in my nose.
I've had sinus operation some time before and have occasionally used a neti pot so I got that out and washed through a few times. After a couple of goes a good blow of my nose got something out. It stunk. Oh my god it was the most absolutely vile smell in the world. much worse out in the open. I put it in a sealed container and put it in the bin. I was gagging at the smell. It was awful.

No idea what it was but it was so rank. I do wonder if i'd not neti'd it out what would have happened.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 29/02/2024 23:07

This happened to my auntie. Turned out it was an old bit of brocolli in a steamer in the cupboard 😂

BeretRaspberry · 29/02/2024 23:13

This happened to us and yep, it was the fridge overflow in our case too.

We were just about to put our house on the market too. Luckily we found it quickly and it didn’t affect anything.
