Who would be left in those 25.
The only disappointment with that, is that the leadership election will be much less entertaining as a result.

Probably the outer London ULEZ MPs because -newsflash- people vote on issues specific to them whether that be religious differences, family safety, traffic zones, or a Primark.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 04/03/2024 18:34

I'm keeping everything crossed that the conservatives don't even get to be the official opposition.

That would be the icing on the cake.

It would be delicious, wouldn’t it? Too good to hope for though.

And who's going to be standing in the opposition at PMQs

Ed Davey in an ideal world (or maybe the Greens?). George Galloway in a nightmare one!

AdamRyan · 04/03/2024 19:10

SNP surely
Which would be very interesting

Are they going to get 25 seats, they seem to be having a competition with the Tories to see how low they can go.

House of Lords have voted (by large majorities) to amend the Rwanda Bill to:
- add to its purposes compliance with the rule of law
- require the Sec of State to consider all relevant evidence and certify to parliament that Rwanda is safe as a condition of making removals /1

- prevent removals to Rwanda unless & until the Monitoring Committee set up by the UK/Rwanda Treaty has reported that the provisions of the Treaty are being adhered to in practice.

Further votes to come. Remains to be seen what the Commons will make of these amendments

Was Rwanda in the Tory manifesto?

If not if I understand correct the parliament act doesn't apply and the HoLs could just keep amending the bill.

MushMonster · 04/03/2024 19:38

Has anyone watch Triangle of Sadness?
It is 100% political and a good watch I think.
For those who have watch it, are we about to go into the Captain's dinner (running around looking for him?) or already at the Captain's dinner?

NEW: France's Parliament votes to make abortion a constitutional right, the first country in the world to do so.

French PM Gabriel Attal: " We're sending a message to all women: your body belongs to you and no one can decide for you."

The vote passed by an enormous margin: 780-72. Saw a standing ovation at the special meeting of the deputies and senators in Versailles.

Reminder that legally abortion is still a criminal act in GB if it is carried out without a doctor and without the approval of two doctors.

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/03/2024 19:54

Putting the IPSOS results into the electoral calculus which gave the 25 seats puts the Lib Dems second with 47 seats. So it would be Ed Davey across the dispatch box.

According to Adam Bienkov, Sunak, Hunt, Gove, Badenoch, Truss and Braverman would all lose their seats on this polling. Which I think we can all agree would be a terrible loss.

That’s good news. It seems it was introduced in April 2022 so definitely not in the manifesto.

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/03/2024 19:58

Rwanda definitely not in the manifesto. Which gives the Lords a lot of room to play with it. The bill only became a thing when Boris was trying to get the newspapers to focus on something that wasn’t him losing control of parliament. It was supposed to be on the news for a day or two at most. Absolute lunatics were not supposed to run with it as a serious policy but he forgot that Patel and Braverman aren’t sane and Sunak has no backbone.

Having stuffed the Lords with donors who want the title, but not the effort of voting, the Tories are a bit stuffed. Is Sunak going to hope to spin his policy wheel again and land it on abolition the Lords?

He’ll probably double their £350 payment for just turning up.

The government has suffered its first defeat in the House of Lords on its bill to rescue the Rwanda scheme.

I was listening to R4 earlier with a lord on it.

He was extremely concise and clear and really explained their rationale and position as the HoL well.

Then he said 'illegal migration' and ds piped up. "When will anyone understand that seeking asylum is legal".

There's hope for the future of this country because the your ones actually do understand.

DuncinToffee · 04/03/2024 20:16

270 Tory members, around 165 showed up

They dragged their heels but got there in the end.

IClaudine · 04/03/2024 20:25

That is great news!

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/03/2024 20:27

Clarke, Deben & Hailsham are the Tory peers that voted against the government on every amendment. Eccles on all but one I think.

The Tory party could do worse than look at Ken Clarke if they want to get themselves back on track.

IClaudine · 04/03/2024 20:27

Though a pity they had to be shamed into awarding the visas.

Piggywaspushed · 04/03/2024 20:33

I have told my DS in Birmingham to go along next week!

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/03/2024 20:42

Ofcom appear to have finally woken up to GB News. Better late than never guys. It’s only taken a zillion complaints.

Neil Oliver moving to online first with only edited highlights shown on TV. Which is not as good as getting rid of him completely but is a step in the right direction.
