If you could only save one, and the other would disappear overnight...

Marks and Spencer or Waitrose/John Lewis?

Can't stand Percy Pigs 🤮

M&S isnt really middle class is it? It markets itself as aspirational middle class -it knows where its market is

Waitrose is more middle class.
John Lewis is no longer middle class as it had dumbed down its brands to be low end high street.

Booths is fab and local delis/farm shops.

low end high street ? Shock

low end 😂

Booths is quite N England-centric, isn’t it? We don’t have Booths this side of the border.

Well as there are only 3 JL sores in Scotland and 6 Waitrose i couldn't careless about them. Even if i was still in the Shires i would want M&S over the JL partnership.

Revelatio · 26/02/2024 14:12

They are completely different shops. JL is a department store. If I could only use one ever again of course it would be JL, you can’t buy luggage, a washing machine, a pram, haberdashery etc., from M&S.

Which ever one my butler prefers

😂

Prices dont make something middle class?

Am I missing something here? Most people are working class and couldn't afford to shop there regularly so you'd have to be middle class (or above) for that.
Like I said though I'm a peasant who enjoys the occasional cake out of the m and s bakery I just couldn't shop there regularly

Is there some kind of test before you're allowed to enter? This middle class wankery needs to stop.

I've just come back from Little Waitrose at a motorway service station. Nobody stopped me at the door or required me to fill in a questionnaire. Maybe it's different at service stations though.

DinnaeFashYersel · 26/02/2024 14:23

No Waitrose close to where I live so I will keep M&S.

SeanMean · 26/02/2024 14:29

I can’t choose!!!!😬

myphoneisbroken · 26/02/2024 14:30

I will keep M&S as I can't afford JL prices, but can just about stretch to the odd cheese and celery sandwich.

LondonPapa · 26/02/2024 14:41

Both M&S and Waitrose/JL suffer from quality issues. Both food options are terrible, tasteless fruit and veg, and, often, watery meats. I prefer my local butchers, greengrocers and speciality shops.

For anything else, I usually can’t get the brand I prefer in JL or M&S so no great loss. Bin them both. Aspirational hellholes.

Orangeandgold · 26/02/2024 14:50

John Lewis and Waitrose.

I feel M&S has lost their touch a little over the years. Only thing I will miss is Percy the Pig on occasion.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 26/02/2024 14:51

Waitrose/John Lewis - without a doubt.

Hoosemover · 26/02/2024 15:03

M&S

Since moving out Edinburgh John Lewis and Waitrose are too far away

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 26/02/2024 15:07

Please don’t make me do this.

“Percy the Pig!” 😂😂😂 Your post has made my day!

SpicyMargaritaPlease · 26/02/2024 15:10

Save M&S! I worked at JL in my late teens/early 20's and it was like a weird cult so I've never found the love for it that others seem to have.

IamwhoIsayIam · 26/02/2024 16:03

Booths. I'd save Booths. Better than both M&S or Waitrose.

Percy the Pig is crap since it went woke and vegan (they had 2 versions before which was great)

But I dont think most people do shop there regularly.
It is treats and top ups- that is the food that they sell and how they market.

Those buying M&S through Ocado probably buy more of a weekly shop but I would suggest that a relatively small number of food customers are doing a full weekly shop.

You are very optimistic to think that you can buy them in JL most days. Their stock control is dire. Probably more chance of getting a pram than a pair of black women's socks

MotherofPearl · 26/02/2024 16:12

JL/Waitrose without a doubt.

Nightblindness · 26/02/2024 16:13

I'd need an amalgamation. M&S for the clothes, J Ls for the household goods. I dont care about M&S food or Waitrose, I buy both but neither in any great quantity.

cardibach · 26/02/2024 16:18

The only thing I really buy from either is underwear from M&S, so I’d have to save them. I don’t think I’m properly middle class though and suspect this is one of the markers. I’m a teacher, as were my parents, but I’ve never felt ‘middle class’. Culturally working class, that’s me.
