Calling the middle classes...!

If you could only save one, and the other would disappear overnight...

Marks and Spencer or Waitrose/John Lewis?

OP posts:
MrsSkylerWhite · 26/02/2024 12:17

None of the above. Aldi for us. If we need something out of the ordinary, Booths.

newnamethanks · 26/02/2024 12:19

You fiend OP, I would regretfully wave M&S goodbye but I would bleat and whinge about it forevermore.

Menomeno · 26/02/2024 12:19

I’m working class and I’d go with M&S for flowers and underwear if nothing else. We don’t have a Waitrose locally, and John Lewis has really gone down the pan in recent years. They seem to have had the same stock for about a decade. Even all their Christmas stuff is the same year on year.

Dearg · 26/02/2024 12:23

Save M&S.

Their own label clothing is very mixed, but the array of labels they have online, and the ease of orders/ returns, is a real bonus to me.

My nearest JL did not reopen after lockdown and the customer service during and after was so dire that I avoid spending with them as much as possible.

Coupled with the recent story in the times about their promoting wearing of chest binders and the debacle of their changing rooms and they have utterly lost the plot.

My nearest Waitrose is over 100 miles away, so have zero opinion on that.

Chewbecca · 26/02/2024 12:28

Save Waitrose / JL.

  • I could feed / clothe / house us forever whereas M&S has product gaps.
  • And of course click and collect.
  • And free parking at Waitrose.
Ametora · 26/02/2024 12:53

M&S isnt really middle class is it? It markets itself as aspirational middle class -it knows where its market is

Waitrose is more middle class.
John Lewis is no longer middle class as it had dumbed down its brands to be low end high street.

Booths is fab and local delis/farm shops.

RhubarbGinForTheWin · 26/02/2024 12:57

Do you have to be middle class to shop at those places?
Other classes are also available.

Leah5678 · 26/02/2024 13:01

Peasant here but I'd save m and s. Their bakery is so damn good

Am I wrong to think Waitrose and John Lewis are the same company??
Also m and s is definitely middle class check the prices. Saying that I'm a peasant and still love it 😂

Prices dont make something middle class?

MadKittenWoman · 26/02/2024 13:07

Definitely Waitrose / John Lewis!

They don’t, no. I’m a prole who shops in both.

hotmailgmailoutlook · 26/02/2024 13:13

What is your definition for middle class people?

treacledan71 · 26/02/2024 13:13

FinsburyCircus · 26/02/2024 12:11

😂Really sorry my thread title landed wrong! It was a bit tongue in cheek, just because the only time I ever feel middle class is when I shop at either!

Should have known not to joke about such things 😉

No worries. Years ago on here you could joke about such things but there is so many snobby people on here now that look down on people. Humour has gone. I did take you wrong initially.

Panama2 · 26/02/2024 13:24

Didn't Marks and Sparks start out as a market stall so very much working class origins. I am surprised the middle classes shop there 😂

Ametora · 26/02/2024 13:24

From M&S website- their market is not traditional middle class. It is an aspirational brand

We also debuted What’s New at M&S Food, a series of social media films featuring celebrities Amanda Holden, Rochelle Humes, Paddy McGuiness and Emma Willis.

Lorrymum · 26/02/2024 13:28

M&S were a lifeline to me during Covid lockdowns, they managed to keep food shelves stocked. The staff were wonderful with obviously terrified, elderly customers.

Synergies · 26/02/2024 13:29

Meh I wouldn't miss M&S

Saschka · 26/02/2024 13:30

Waitrose/JL all the way.

usedtobeasizeten · 26/02/2024 13:33

JL/Waitrose.

AntonDuPig · 26/02/2024 13:36

It’s like asking me to choose between my children!
< also tongue in cheek 😜 >

Erm, I’d go with JL/waitrose because I can use Ocado for my M&S fix 🤓

M&S has pretty much destroyed Ocado as the middle classes have left Ocado in droves.

Our Waitrose used to have 2 vans and there were Ocado vans were everywhere. Now you hardly ever see an Ocado van and the Waitrose fleet is massive.

Iwantacampervan · 26/02/2024 13:43

Waitrose for the free tea!

BlueSkyBlueLife · 26/02/2024 13:55

M&S because there is Waitrose/JL where I live 😆😆

WildCherryBlossom · 26/02/2024 13:55

Definitely keeping Waitrose : JL
