Do you write 7 with a line through it?

I do. I don't know why.

I've just hand written a returns note for a parcel and thought 'why do I do that?'

I know it's used to differentiate between a 1 and 7 but my handwriting allows a good visual difference between the two numbers without the slash.

Yes, always have.

WaitingForMojo · 26/02/2024 08:17

No, but my kids have been told to at school.

DH puts a diagonal line through a zero.

AlwaysFreezing · 26/02/2024 08:17

Yep, me too. No idea why. Must have been taught to!

Talipesmum · 26/02/2024 08:17

Not for “just me” but if I’m writing 7 on something where someone else might read it and have to be absolutely clear, I will.

rainbowstardrops · 26/02/2024 08:17

Yes, have done for years. Don't know why I started!

HereComesYourMam · 26/02/2024 08:17

Yes. I think I might have started it as a teen with aspirations to appear cool and European? And it stuck.

Mydogfoundthechainsaw · 26/02/2024 08:18

Yes, I do this too!

minipie · 26/02/2024 08:18

Same. No idea why. My parents don’t and it wasn’t taught at school.

🤷‍♀️

FloralQuestions · 26/02/2024 08:18

I do. I always thought it was the "French way" but maybe thats jaut something my parents told me.

I also put a diagonal line through 0 if I'm writing a technical document or I need absolutely zero ambiguity.

IcanHearUClemFandango · 26/02/2024 08:18

I know at school we were taught to write a normal, naked 7 so I must have started in adulthood.

I was taught to do it at school - the continental 7 as it was called

DappledThings · 26/02/2024 08:19

Yes, my parents do so I do. In my mum's case it was definitely because that's the French way and she wanted to be French really.

CurlewKate · 26/02/2024 08:19

I do- I was a pretentious teenager! I also hold mugs in two hands with the handle pointing outwards........

DarkDarkNight · 26/02/2024 08:19

That’s how I was taught so I always did but I don’t now as nobody else at work does it. It must have been taught during a very specific period at schools then abandoned.

yellowcone · 26/02/2024 08:19

Yes I do , not sure why , when I see a number 7 without the line it looks fine but when I try to write it myself it feels weird not to add the line 🤔

Knackeredhamster · 26/02/2024 08:20

Same here I do and no idea why!

Must ask DD if she does

See I don't do this, but it makes way more sense because it's much harder to distinguish zeros and 'os'.

BTW does anyone know is the 0 in National insurance numbers are letters or numbers? I never know which to say.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 26/02/2024 08:20

Yes, DH does too. Our dc were always told not to at primary school, secondary really don't care as long as it's legible. We're 35 & 42 if that makes any difference.

fourelementary · 26/02/2024 08:21

Yes. It differentiates it from a 1 and similar idea with line through zero to differentiate it from a letter O
we weren’t taught it in school and I started in my teens as it was “cool”.

Do you also watch the rain droplets race out of train windows whilst wearing an overly large scarf?

I do, have done since a teenager. Wasn't taught to but prefer it.

TeenDivided · 26/02/2024 08:21

I do it more often if not writing a 1 anywhere, eg house numbers and postcodes.
I write a 1 as a straight line so my 7s and 1s are clear. But if just writing a 7 it could be mistaken for a 1 with a flick, so crossing it saves confusion.

Alocasia · 26/02/2024 08:22

Yes. Started in adulthood. My job involves having to write .25 and .75 quite often by hand, I think the line through the seven makes it less ambiguous

Omg yes! This is why I do it too

YouDidntEvenAskIfSheWasThereMoriarty · 26/02/2024 08:23

I do.

I won't lie - it would have started because of pretentions as a child. And now it's ingrained as such as a habit that I feel weird if I don't do it.

In fairness, I have found it useful in my life. For a long time in my career, I needed to scribble numbers down quickly and it's been really useful not getting my 1s and 7s mixed up when they're scrawled.
