My stupid mistake and I'm gutted...has anyone else done something similar?

Last October I booked theatre tickets for me and DH to see Hamilton and I was so exited.

Unfortunately shortly after that I received a cancer diagnosis, so normal life went put the window ...but I had that to look forward to.

Last night the date finally came round, yeahhh....and both me and DH donned our finery, had a bite to eat, drink in the bar and made our way to our seats.....only to find other people on them! After a bit of confusion we realised we were a week late! The theatre staff were so kind but as it was the last night it was sold out.
So we left totally gutted and down £200.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who has done something so incredibly stupid.....it may make me feel just a tad better!

Not quite the same, but I once went to the wrong funeral!
It was an old work colleague and I'd got the time wrong, I was early by an hour, and ended up having to sit through the funeral of a complete stranger.

This happened to friends of mine too, as there are two separate chapels at the local crematorium.

It was my lovely friend's funeral and two of the group arrived late. They'd been sitting in the other chapel, a little surprised that they didn't recognise anyone. When the guy doing the eulogy mentioned how much they would all miss old Uncle Johnny, the penny dropped and my friends had to tiptoe out and come and find the right place.

We all agreed that our lovely friend would have been the first to find it highly amusing.

I found an envelope in my bedroom drawer once and it contained a cheque for £400 which I hadn’t forgotten I was owed for an insurance payout. I must have not realised it contained the cheque when I received it and the letter ended up in the draw. Unfortunately when I found it was some time after it was sent. I tried to cash it but it was too late. I still kick myself over that to this day. Sorry about your tickets OP.

Crushed23 · 25/02/2024 19:12

This has happened to me twice in the last year alone.

Booked a non-refundable hotel in Liverpool one week earlier than I needed it. Lost £90.

Booked 2x opera tickets for the wrong date (also one week earlier than we were going to be in the city). Lost ~€100.

It’s like my mind registers the day of the week but takes no notice of the date!

I've done that with Premier Inn York (York has Premier Inn Blossom Street North and South which are about 2 doors down from each other), tried to check in quite late in the evening after a family party, only to find I should have been in the other one.

I did this in York last year.

Booked one, arrived at the other, traipsed back round to the other one and had to walk back and forth between the two buildings for breakfast or dinner.

Utterly bonkers

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 25/02/2024 19:13

Oh @Chouquettes thats a good one. I hope you booked into an airport hotel, switched on the tv and ordered yourself a large glass of wine!

ImTheMidsomerMurderer · 25/02/2024 19:15

I have never actually done anything like these stories - just jinxed myself haven't I 🤦🏻‍♀️- But these are the exact reasons I hate to be in charge of everything as it's only a matter of time isn't it!

Fifthtimelucky · 25/02/2024 19:16

I once took my daughter to the ballet on the wrong day. Fortunately we went a day early so we went back the following day.

Not me, but someone I know once did two stupid things:

  1. turned up at Gatwick for a flight scheduled to leave Heathrow (or it might have been the other way round);

  2. put her clocks forward instead of back in the autumn and turned up to something two hours early!

TheBirdintheCave · 25/02/2024 19:21

I've shown up at the airport a day early and also, just yesterday, I realised I've booked tickets for our next holiday from Heathrow instead of Gatwick 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ Very glad I realised my mistake now instead of later but it does mean we'll have to pay for a hotel for the night before now instead of getting a half an hour bus from outside our house 😅

😂😂😂

That has given me a chuckle!

(And not much else today has, so thank you!)

Chouquettes · 25/02/2024 19:23

Nope! Drove home again and went back the next day .

ThePerfectDog · 25/02/2024 19:25

Loads of similar experiences.

Turned up at a little girls party to find all the wrapping paper on the presents were very ‘boy oriented’. We were a day early.
Turned up at hospital appointments a day early a couple of times.
Went to the wrong theatre to watch a show.
Turned up a day early to collect a friend from the airport (that one wasn’t my fault, she was coming from Australia and had forgotten the difference in days caused by the flight)

viques · 25/02/2024 19:26

I went to the wrong airport. I was so pleased with myself because I was in plenty of time, though not in time to drive round the other side of the M25 to the right airport.
( the airline staff were lovely and booked me onto another flight the next day and didn’t charge me, thanks EasyJet)

Punsandroses · 25/02/2024 19:26

@Catsandcuddles Yes it was Manchester...oh no, we were/ should have been in the circle but have happily sat anywhere..if only we'd known🙄

OP I hope your treatment is going well. I’m pretty sure that Hamilton isn’t closing any time soon so hopefully you’ll manage to get tickets again. There is a lottery you can enter so hopefully
one way or another you’ll get to see it.

ManchesterGirl2 · 25/02/2024 19:31

I've done it too, turned up in the evening and discovered I'd bought matinee tickets.

ohpumpkinseeds · 25/02/2024 19:32

I've turned up at the airport a day early!

Sworntofun · 25/02/2024 19:35

A few years ago I went with DH to London for the weekend to see a very famous band involving hotel, train, dm coming 100 miles to look after dd. We were a week early!!! Actually turned up at the venue and couldn’t understand why tickets wouldn’t scan in the machine. Lots of alcohol was consumed that night ! Embarrassing

RotundCheese · 25/02/2024 19:36

We were meant to be getting a sleeper train back to London from Brussels Central. Went to Brussels Midi and despite all the signage didn't clock that anything was amiss - I think we had convinced ourselves that perhaps 'midi' was equivalent to 'central' in Flemish??

Missed the train, obviously. Bankrupted ourselves buying tickets for the next train. I was in bits, as because of the mistake I missed an appointment that I'd been waiting a long time for.

It's still not really a funny memory, actually. 🫤

LunaNorth · 25/02/2024 19:43

I turned up a year late to a dental appointment.

Kind of.

I found an appointment card in my purse, thought I was lucky to have checked it in time, and turned up.

The receptionist couldn’t find my appointment. Because it was an old card. From the year before.

Littlebutloud · 25/02/2024 19:44

I booked my DCs 4th birthday party for the following year instead of the current one. Didn’t realise till the day 🙃

LunaNorth · 25/02/2024 19:50

Oh, and when my kids were little we took them to Camp Bestival, and paid for boutique camping in a yurt.

We turned up with all our stuff to find there was no record of our booking. I’d only gone and booked the accommodation for Bestival, which was happening on the Isle of Wight, a week later.

They lent us a bell tent. A bell tent for a bell end.

Hippee · 25/02/2024 19:53

I was once on the coach to the airport and realised that I had bought tickets to Heathrow, when we were flying from Gatwick. Luckily the coach went on to Gatwick after Heathrow, and I was able to swap the tickets at an earlier stop at Stansted.

Dogstar78 · 25/02/2024 19:57

In my younger days, went to Ibiza. First day we were having a good laugh at/ with a group of lads around the pool they missed their flight by a day, which was was at 1.00am. Well we had such a nice holiday we decided to rebook later flights. Yes that 1.00am flight, we did exactly the same thing. I am sure their mostake jist atuck in our heads. Then had to book another flight. An expensive 3x flight home holiday.

I ran the marathon in Berlin, forgot about 1 hour time difference (days before smart phones). I was very specific about my morning prep. All went out the window and had to run a mile to the start line and made ot just on time.

NotMeNoNo · 25/02/2024 19:57

I turned up with a friend with our two DS, for an evening performance of a musical, it was part of a group booking. Except we had matinee tickets. Literally got as far as saying "these are our seats" to someone Blush Blush Blush . Friendship was never the same again.

Also led my boss onto the wrong train at Euston one evening after a long meeting, instead of the Birmingham train it was fast to Crewe.
