Paying someone to sanitise your dustbins?

Is this something people do? Or does it indicate a weird cleanliness obsession.

I mean that once the council has emptied the bin by tipping ou the bags, a private company then takes your wheeie bins away, then washes and fragrances them before returning them to your property.

My MIL pays £11 a month for this. I think it’s odd.

Pootles34 · 24/02/2024 10:51

Yeah we do it, it's a bit ridiculous really but we started when our food/garden waste bin got maggots in 🤢

IslandsintheStream24 · 24/02/2024 10:52

I think it’s a good idea! My bins get gross.

snowlady4 · 24/02/2024 10:52

We have a cleaning man than comes round occasionally. We pay him a few pound. They're not sanitised!- just kind of jetwashed- it is only occasionally though. Perhaps there's someone around your area?

W0tnow · 24/02/2024 10:53

I’d not heard of it until last year (?) I think? A young man with Down’s syndrome had started quite a successful business in his area providing the service.

MaggieFS · 24/02/2024 10:54

Yep, quite common round us, I don't think they sanitise them, just a really good clean out. I would have thought once or twice a year sufficient and really' no real reason people can't do it themselves.

Foxblue · 24/02/2024 10:56

I've seen this around here - I think it's a great option to have if you have mobility issues that prevent you doing it yourself, or if there's been something particularly disgusting in it in the past and you can't quite get it off the bottom or something.
However I will stick with my yearly 'wait until its empty, stick some washing up liquid and a few kettles of water, give it a very casual scrub with a broom' job myself. And honestly I don't even think it will need that this year, I'm quite careful about trying to put anything wet or sticky inside other stuff so it doesn't leak.

Hoglet70 · 24/02/2024 10:57

I used to do this and then they suddenly stopped coming so now every so often I get the hose out and a broom and give them a good scrub. I also use wheelie bin bags in the general waste bin. I can't stand a stinky bin and I am definitely not one of those house proud cleanliness freaks.

Psychoticbreak · 24/02/2024 10:58

I am in Ireland and we have 4 bins (general waste, recycling, compost and glass) and I pay 18euro every second month for them all to be cleaned.

PiggieWig · 24/02/2024 10:58

I’ve done it from time to time. Not weekly or monthly or anything, just when they are especially grotty.

BoohooWoohoo · 24/02/2024 10:59

I pay for it because the bin for food/garden waste attracts maggots in summer

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/02/2024 10:59

What a good idea! Moving soon and don’t want to leave our buyers with manky wheelie bins, had no idea it was a thing. Excellent.

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/02/2024 11:00

We have it done a couple of times in the summer when the warm weather makes the trash and the bin stinky. It’s better than getting a waft of decay every time the bin is opened. I wouldn’t get it done on a more frequent basis though, that seems unnecessary.

Maxwellfatcat · 24/02/2024 11:01

We get maggots in the summer if the bin isn’t cleaned.

MrsMitford3 · 24/02/2024 11:02

We have it. Live in a victorian semi with a path to door and bins along side the path so very very close every time you walk in.

Bins collected fortnightly and it gets really smelly and I also had maggots once in the summer.

I pay £5 a bin monthly. Completely worth it to me.

Augustus40 · 24/02/2024 11:02

I remember paying for this service when ds was in nappies owing to maggots but after that I stopped. Am perfectly capable of disinfecting my wheelie bins now and again. I do them in dry weather and lift the lid up to dry out. I think it is excessive to have this done regularly.

Lulu1919 · 24/02/2024 11:03

All our rubbish is bagged before going in the bin outside

bellsbuss · 24/02/2024 11:06

I've been having this done for about 5 years now

Sirzy · 24/02/2024 11:07

£3 a bin per month. Well worth it.

Woahtherehoney · 24/02/2024 11:10

I get it done in the summer months - we end up with lots of maggots otherwise and the bins start to smell.

Muchcolderthanoflate · 24/02/2024 11:13

Cripes is this a thing? I've never cleaned my bins in 25 years! Never had a maggot and couldn't care less if they look a bit mucky. Mind you I live rurally and the bins are hidden away around the back.

Moier · 24/02/2024 11:14

£2 every two weeks.. after bin is emptied.. jet wash clean wheelie bin bag.
Worth it.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 24/02/2024 11:16

I wish we had that service around here. I bag everything before it goes in the bin but the refuse collectors just throw the bins back any old where so I often inherit a stinky filthy bin and someone else gets my lovely clean one. And yes, my number is on the bin... doesn't stop the CFs!

Ted27 · 24/02/2024 11:17

£3 once a month

One less thing for me to do, well worth it

Ifailed · 24/02/2024 11:23

What's the problem with maggots, they won't attack you?
