Paying someone to sanitise your dustbins?

Is this something people do? Or does it indicate a weird cleanliness obsession.

I mean that once the council has emptied the bin by tipping ou the bags, a private company then takes your wheeie bins away, then washes and fragrances them before returning them to your property.

Mine get washed out at the kerbside after they have been emptied. The guy comes around behind the bin lorry. Costs a few quid a month. If it's indicative of a weird obsession then a hell of a lot of people share it because this guy does bins every day in my small town and makes his living from it.

Hercisback · 24/02/2024 11:31

Wheelie bin bag? What an utter waste of plastic.

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 24/02/2024 11:35

I’ve just cancelled my bin service of this after having them done for around 7 years.

the guy who does them, will only do them if you have them done every time.

his prices were starting to rise and it was getting to £4.50 per bin clean, so £25 a month.

Danikm151 · 24/02/2024 11:37

Every couple of months i pour bleach in mine and clean it with the hose pipe

Edinvillian · 24/02/2024 11:38

We get all ours cleaned once a month, think it's about £3 per bin. (We have 4) Saves us doing it 😂

dementedpixie · 24/02/2024 11:39

Mine gets washed kerbside every 2 weeks when the food/garden waste is emptied alongside a 2nd bin. Costs £3 for both

DiscoBeat · 24/02/2024 11:41

I clean it myself with the jet wash but some people locally have them done by a company.

EndlesslyDistracted · 24/02/2024 11:41

Never clean ours, never had maggots, it doesn't get dirty or smelly as everything is bagged.

DiscoBeat · 24/02/2024 11:42

What's the problem with maggots, they won't attack you?

No, but the resulting flies are unsanitary.

dementedpixie · 24/02/2024 11:43

My food/garden waste bin gets maggots in the summer despite the contents being double bagged. It is only collected every 2 weeks so can get smelly and disgusting when it's warm outside

Meadowfinch · 24/02/2024 11:43

Sounds like something people with too much money do. 😀

I pour some dettol and two kettles of boiling water in my bin, once a month. Scrub quickly with a garden broom and then empty down a drain. Five minutes. Sorted.

Flatleak · 24/02/2024 11:44

How are your bins getting so dirty? Don't you use bin bags?

My mixed recycling bin doesn't allow bin bags
The garden waste/food waste bin only has those green biodegradable bags and loose grass/branches, etc.

IslandsintheStream24 · 24/02/2024 11:49

My bin bag refuse collection is only once every 3 weeks so the first bag is very smelly after it’s been hanging around especially in the summer. I use two bags as well to minimise the stench.

Ifailed · 24/02/2024 11:50

Blimey, why not just put the whole bin in a bag and be done with it?

dementedpixie · 24/02/2024 11:51

And yes, we also have a 3 week cycle for general waste, mixed recycling and the paper/cardboard bins. The food/garden waste is every 2 weeks. Bin emptying day can be very stinky!

Aaron95 · 24/02/2024 11:52

It seems to be pretty common but I have never seen the point. It's a bin. It lives outside. It's probably manky inside but at the end of the day I just dump rubbish in it.

NorthernDancer · 24/02/2024 11:54

£3 per bin per month here as well. Money very well spent imho. No more stinky bins - ever.

newnamethanks · 24/02/2024 11:58

Buy a hose pipe. 5 mins and you're done.

YourWinter · 24/02/2024 12:00

Only my black bin for non-recyclable and non-compostable waste is bagged. They’re the bags from the kitchen bin, and dog waste and scooped out waste from the cat litter. Fortnightly collection. It has never had maggots.

The blue bin for recyclables won’t be emptied if anything is bagged. I rinse food residue off all glass, plastic trays and tins before they’re binned. Fortnightly collection. It has never had maggots.

The green bin for garden waste similarly won’t be emptied if it contains bags. My kitchen and garden waste is home composted where possible, the worst weeds go in the green bin and very little food waste. Collected monthly December to February, fortnightly the rest of the year. It’s never had maggots.

If any of the bins look slimy I use a kettle of water and a broom to freshen them, maybe twice a year.

If food containers are washed and not put in the bin with food, sauce or sticky stuff on them, they won’t smell. It’s pretty basic.

Belovedbagle · 24/02/2024 12:00

Yes of course. Unless I fancied climbing in to clean it!

Silvers11 · 24/02/2024 12:51

I just do my own when they need it - not every time they are emptied though. We do have people round here who come round after the bins have been emptied and jet wash the insides of the bins. No idea what they charge, but don't see the point in paying. We do have a garden though, so it's easy for us to hose them down and empty down a drain.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 24/02/2024 12:55

We do for the main bin but not recycling ones. DH set it up as he works from home and they knocked to ask if we were interested. I'm not sure I'd have bothered but it saves me the job so I'm not complaining.

GlasgowGal82 · 24/02/2024 12:58

Where I grew up there used to be a company that followed the bin lorry round and you could pay them to have your green bin cleaned out as soon as it was emptied. Now we have four wheelie bins all emptied on different days no idea how that business model operates anymore. We don't get ours done now because everything is sealed in bags so they bin itself doesn't get too bad.

BurbageBrook · 24/02/2024 13:00

Yeah we do it after we got maggots once. It's only £3 every month.
