Paying someone to sanitise your dustbins?

Is this something people do? Or does it indicate a weird cleanliness obsession.

I mean that once the council has emptied the bin by tipping ou the bags, a private company then takes your wheeie bins away, then washes and fragrances them before returning them to your property.

My mum used to pay for this every other week! Completely unnecessary. Maybe a few times a year or More in the summer would make sense but it’s a bin? Not planning on eating out of it.

LittleGreenDragons · 24/02/2024 13:05

We pay £30 annually for just the main bin to be done once a month. We wouldn't need to do this if stbex wasn't such a disgusting human being who throws everything in unbagged, including dead birds or fox poo. The recycle and garden bins don't get cleaned at all, they never smell (probably because I'm the only one who fills them so does it properly).

moodymary · 24/02/2024 13:08

We do as they get really grim in the summer months and although it’s not really needed in the winter, it works out cheaper to pay a monthly dd than for more expensive one-off cleans as and when.

TheChosenTwo · 24/02/2024 13:09

Most houses (including ours!) on our stretch of road use the kerbside bin cleaning people, I think it’s once a month and they jet wash and sanitise (? I don’t really know!) the bins. I also don’t know how much it costs but i don’t think it would be much.
We have had maggots before when it’s been very hot - unpleasant and the resulting flies escaping the bin was repulsive. Never had that issue since using the bin cleaning people.

mitogoshi · 24/02/2024 13:09

You can pay monthly or adhoc here, it's a social enterprise, I'm very happy to pay £10 once a year or so

Universalsnail · 24/02/2024 13:10

I pay £5 a month for this. Maggots are gross so in the summer it means maggots get kept on top of.

TattiePants · 24/02/2024 13:12

I've had our garden waste bin jet washed a couple of times to stop it smelling. I don't bother with the other two as recycling is always clean before it's put in the bin and general waste is always bagged first.

Shityshitybangbang · 24/02/2024 13:14

2.60 every three weeks with our general rubbish bucket. He comes after the bin lorry with his jet wash. He lives in a huge house, so must be doing well.

Marblessolveeverything · 24/02/2024 13:15

Yes I have this booked every quarter for years. Why wouldn't I? I've no intention of doing it myself as it is awkward and their machine makes short work of it. It's cheaper than a take away coffee,🤷‍♀️

SuffolkUnicorn · 24/02/2024 13:17

They don’t take them away they put them on the van and clean them with a pressure washer

JobMatch3000 · 24/02/2024 13:26

What on earth are people throwing away which is causing maggots in their bin? Don't you rinse your tins and bottles before recycling?

HoneyWogan · 24/02/2024 13:29

If you have a hose and are not physically unable to do so, it seems to me like paying somebody to do a job you could easily do yourself; but then, there are lots of basic services like that out there, and as long as the provider and customer are happy, I can't see an issue.

If our bin got nasty on occasion - sticky bin juice leaking from a bag or whatever - I would clean it out with a pressure hose and brush; but everything is bagged and it doesn't normally get grim - for something that has a lid and lives outside anyway. I'm also surprised at people paying somebody to clean out their recycling wheelie bin as well - how dirty does it get when everything that goes in it is already rinsed/clean?

It's my food and garden waste bin that gets maggots in the summer as the flies get attracted to it especially when the sun has warmed it all up. Only gets emptied every 2 weeks

mrsbyers · 24/02/2024 13:30

We used to get it done in old house but now we just use wheelie bin liners

TheTripThatWasnt · 24/02/2024 13:32

It has never occured to me to clean (or have some else clean) my wheelie bins. And they've never had maggots in.

Food waste is collected weekly (compostable bags in the food bin), recycling 2 weekly (tins etc rinsed before going in) and general waste 3 weekly. The kitchen/bathroom bins have bags in them which go in there, but any other waste just gets chucked in.

If you've got maggots in the bin, it would be better to prevent that by managing waste differently, surely? And as for wheelie bin liners... a plastic travety and completely unnecessary.

Your food waste is collected more often than mine. Can't you see that would give more opportunity to get maggots in there?

blackandwhitepurrmachine · 24/02/2024 13:35

£3 a bin here.

I'm more than happy to pay because quite frankly there is nothing worse than bin juice, especially in the hot summer. We don't have a food waste collection but I do have a compost bin.

Pootles34 · 24/02/2024 10:51

Yeah we do it, it's a bit ridiculous really but we started when our food/garden waste bin got maggots in 🤢

We do too due to maggots.

shoppingshamed · 24/02/2024 13:44

DiscoBeat · 24/02/2024 11:42

What's the problem with maggots, they won't attack you?

No, but the resulting flies are unsanitary.

Don't they just fly away, my bin gets maggots I'm very hot weather, I leave the lid open and the birds eat the maggots in about 30 seconds flat

SisterhoodNotCisterhood · 24/02/2024 13:58

My neighbours have their bin at their back door which is right beside my door. Their wheelie is just there and they throw dog food packets, food waste and anything else straight in. They even throw dog poo in when they eventually pick it up for cutting the grass.
That bin STINKS every single time they open it. I bloody wish they'd use the local bin cleaning service so it would at least smell okay for a few days a month.

Of course. But why not bag up your food waste? If flies can't get to it, they can't lay eggs, and they won't hatch into maggots.

Our food waste has only been a weekly collection for 2 years, but I've been putting waste out for 30+ years with no maggots!

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 24/02/2024 14:05

I pay £14 every 5 cleans & they come once a month (bin emptied fortnightly). Started when we had a very hot summer and maggots were a problem and it is definitely worth it to me. Sure I could go out there myself with bleach and a scrubbing brush but for £30 a year I’m very happy for someone else to do it!

effoffwind · 24/02/2024 14:07

A van comes around my village and does this once a month .. really pees me off as they jet wash the bins right outside my house

Took me ages to realise where all the grubby dirt was coming from -- all over my grass , fence and sometimes my car

PawsisShady · 24/02/2024 14:12

My neighbour does mine. Tips it on the side, jet washes it, shoves some disinfectant in and puts it back Grin
He saw me cleaning it out once but with a bucket as I live in an apartment, eye rolled and said "give it here" so now he does it every time he does his

It is bagged up; double bagged in fact! Doesn't stop the flies laying eggs though
