Paying someone to sanitise your dustbins?

Is this something people do? Or does it indicate a weird cleanliness obsession.

I mean that once the council has emptied the bin by tipping ou the bags, a private company then takes your wheeie bins away, then washes and fragrances them before returning them to your property.

How are your bins getting so dirty? Don't you use bin bags?

We can't use bin bags in our recycling bins. One bin is plastics and another bin is paper so it does get a bit grubby with packaging stuck to the bin etc. The grey food bin the bags often burst as they need to be biodegradable bags 🤢. The general waste bin we can use bags but that's mostly food packaging so it can get smells.

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/02/2024 14:40

Lots of my neighbours do but I don't care if my bin is dirty

tomago · 24/02/2024 14:41

MaggieFS · 24/02/2024 10:54

Yep, quite common round us, I don't think they sanitise them, just a really good clean out. I would have thought once or twice a year sufficient and really' no real reason people can't do it themselves.

There's loads of reasons someone might not ve able to do it themselves

Itstime1 · 24/02/2024 14:41

£4 every 2 weeks here. Saves me having to do it myself- I don’t see a problem with it?

would much rather things be clean!

Pigglyplaystruant99 · 24/02/2024 14:51

£4.50 a month here - bins emptied fortnightly. Have had them done for years - I'm very definitely not OCD about cleaning, either!

Upsidedowncat · 24/02/2024 15:06

We've done this once so far. In fact, probably need to again. I wouldn't make it a routine thing though, just when the bin is starting to get smelly and things have leaked.

FizzyWizzyBubbles · 24/02/2024 15:10

I pay 3.95, 4 weekly.
Where our bin sits is is the sun. In summer it can often end up with maggots, due to food and sun/heat.

If i clean it i have to run hose through house. Too much faff.

alcoholnightmare · 24/02/2024 15:27

I do, far less flies in the summer now

Februaryismyfavourite · 24/02/2024 15:56

I do it at the start of autumn, after the heat and flies of the summer.

It's a one off payment of £10. No idea if it helps but I like a spruce!

Rosesanddaisies1 · 24/02/2024 16:02

Never heard of this! I rinse the food waste bin out using the hose sometimes. Rarely use black bin

RunningThroughMyHead · 24/02/2024 16:04

We pay £3 a fortnight. Helps as we have nappies going into it and it's minimal cost. Not sure if we'll bother once the kids are out of nappies, we'll have to see how much they stink!

SparkyBlue · 24/02/2024 16:23

I get mine cleaned every month

Redglitter · 24/02/2024 16:26

They do it round here £3 a bin & come the day after bin day. I get my general waste done each time & my garden waste one done periodically

Power washed & sanitised.

cardibach · 24/02/2024 16:31

I don’t have wheelie bins 🤷‍♀️
We have weighted bags, one for tin/plastic, one for card and one for paper, plus a smallish caddy for food and a larger one for glass. They all live inside. Non-recyclable rubbish goes in black bags. Recyclables all collected once a week, black bags once every 3 weeks (we can put out up to 3). Food waste can be a maggot issue but I think the flies are getting in while it’s open in the small caddy in the kitchen, not after they go in the food bin. Bit of a hassle with all the sorting but seems to work otherwise.

SusieKin · 24/02/2024 16:32

I just do it myself. What a waste of money paying someone to do this.

Good for you. I prefer someone to do it for me and regard it as value for money

iwafs · 24/02/2024 16:44

I've seen companies that drive up, they have water/cleaning products on their truck, they scoop up your bin, clean it and put it back - no need to take it away.

I haven't ever used the service, but there are a lot of minging bins about that could do with the service so I can see why it exists and why people pay for it. I get bin liners that are thicker and won't rip so the bin never gets skanky in the first place. But sometimes, cunts who walk by put their dog shit in my bin. There is a public bin less than 20metres from my house!!! I have to be careful what time I put my bin out in order to avoid the dog shit bastards. It stinks the bin out, so i suppose a cleaning company would be a good solution to that.

Snugglemonkey · 24/02/2024 16:49

We get ourselves done. Totally worth it.

BoohooWoohoo · 24/02/2024 16:52

Ifailed · 24/02/2024 11:23

What's the problem with maggots, they won't attack you?

They hatch and eventually fly out the bin. I don’t want bluebottles rushing out when I lift the bin lid 🤮

Garden and food waste go in the same bin here and I do more gardening in the summer so any maggots will be nearer the lid and I don’t have the reflexes of a ninja that might allow me to dispose of food and shut the lid in time.

MsSquiz · 24/02/2024 16:57

We have our general waste bin cleaned once a month by a mobile bin cleaner. We have babies nappies and cat litter amongst our general waste, so it can get gross, especially in the summer.

I don't have the time or the inclination to do it myself and DH is the same, so I'm happy to pay someone to do it for me

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 24/02/2024 17:00

Our general waste is bagged, and doesn't contain anything that would attract flies.
Our mixed recycling ♻️ is loose but everything is clean (tins in the dishwasher etc) so the bin doesn't get especially dirty.
Our food waste is taken weekly. I keep a food waste bag in the chest freezer to put any waste meat in during the summer months and then put it out on the morning of collection. Thus far, never had maggots.

I do rinse the bins with the hose and a bit of bleach, but they don't ever really smell.

In your opinion. My time is worth a lot more than the cost of getting someone else to do this job for me. Each to their own.

Yellowdaysaregood · 24/02/2024 17:23

Yep, we do this, it only takes one blow fly in the summer and maggots galore. It became a thing when the bins started being emptied once a fortnight. Our neighbour has this problem all the time and still refuses to pay the measly 2.50 to stop this grossness. Completely worth it in IMO.

Aviee · 24/02/2024 17:25

If you get maggots in the summer leave the lid open and the birds will have a field day

MidnightMeltdown · 24/02/2024 17:26

I've never heard of this before. I thought people just cleaned them with a hose and some disinfectant 🤷🏻‍♀️
