I was watching a TikTok earlier where someone was talking about chat rooms in the early noughties. I'd completely forgotten about the amount of time I spent on these pre-MSN messenger & The Sims.

I'm trying to remember the name of a specific one and I can't and it's really bothering me!

Every time someone logged in they could chose a new name. I think it had a black screen and you chose your font and font colour. There was a main board that people got kicked out for 'flooding' (posting too many messages in a row). The names of everyone in the chat room were on the right hand side of the screen and you clicked on their name to message them. I think swearing was banned.

I do. I spent months chatting to an absolutely beautiful boy on there while listening to Head Automatica. I was old enough to know much better (at least 21).

I had a Dreamcast games console that you could access chat rooms via . Ended up going out with a guy (I was 19 he was 23 so not peado) and when we'd been 'together' about 6 weeks he wanted to me to change my university that o was just starting and come to one near him at the other end of the country. I didn't because I wasn't a total idiot and we split up after about 4 weeks because he resented me socialising with males at Uni 😂 . Met dh 2 months later and been together since!

I was just going to ask if anyone remembered the Dreamcast chats. It used to be utter filth with people basically sexting with certain others but all within one big group chat. It was crazy.

I used AOL a lot too. I was 18 in the late 90s and met many shags men through that.

I remember AOL chatrooms where people would type silly nonsense, my cousin and I were studying with part time jobs as receptionists, we worked in different offices so would spend most of the time chatting to each other on AOL when not answering the phones.

I loved Bebo. Met many lovely strange people on there.

Ah I was an AOL chat room kid. Actually met some amazing people who I'm still friends with to this day.

Faceparty is a blast from the past too but I think it started needing invites to join and that killed it off quite quickly

One of the chat rooms I frequented as a teen (around 14-15) was Habbo Hotel 🤣 you’d wander around As a little person to different areas of this online world and start conversations with absolute strangers from all over the world. I thought it was great at the time looking back at it now i cringe, very unsafe, I even went and met up with a boy that I’d met on the chat site which could have gone very badly but thankfully he ended up being the same age as me. I would never let my oldest who is almost 12 be on anything like that when he is that age.

I'd spend hours talking on MSN to my crush who would then blank me at school! Sad times. Thankfully he has deteriorated significantly with age

I liked the chatrooms on Napster and Soulseek. Chat about music while illegally downloading music p2p. Soulseek allowed you to browse people's folders so I got to know quite a lot of new artists via people with similar tastes.

I met a boyfriend through Hot Or Not when I'd just turned 18. He was 10 year older and not a wise choice - with hindsight, he liked teenage girls far too much :(

Yes!!! You know what though loads of those chatrooms were like that, black with different names each time and font colours. I used to haunt really niche forums that had their own basic chats - things like 'save the snow leopards!' - I met my first boyfriend on there who I dated long distance on and off for most of school, and a few people I've stayed friends with 20 years on.

I was never a chat room type, preferred ICQ. Did spend a huge amount of time of the original h2g2 forum though, in the good old days of the London meet ups.

I loved faceparty! I would love my old pictures from those days back, I must have looked such a twat but thought it was great 😂
