Been in tears all night - lovely staff and massive breakthrough for dd

My dd has autism and has another condition that causes seizures that have tourettes like tics. Life is really hard for her, she struggles a lot.

She has barely been out of the house for the last few years, part time school, hasn't really been able to do anything or go anywhere.

A band she absolutely loves was playing last night, I bought her pretty expensive VIP tickets as they had a little Q&A thing with 3 acoustic songs, and then I thought we would leave before the actual gig.

I spoke to one of the staff at the venue about possibly letting is out a quieter exit, and off she went, came back with the most lovely security guys. They told me that dd was more than welcome to use the accessible area, that she would be given a seat, explained what to do if she felt anxious at all (go to the person working the accessible area and they could take her to get some air if she felt overwhelmed) and were just absolutely amazing honestly. She sat down, they kept checking in she was OK, even complimented her ear defenders 😭

At one point she needed the toilet so they escorted her down the back stairs, escorted her right to the front of the queue at the toilet, and then waited and back up the same way and got us back to the seating area.

They allowed us to wait until the crowd had cleared before we left as well.

I've spent the whole night crying, I never thought in a million years that my dd would be able to attend a full gig, let alone actually enjoy one. The way those staff went totally above and beyond was absolutely amazing honestly life changing for my dd.

No real point to this post, just a very proud Mum today who is absolutely over the moon at the way all of those lovely security people have been trained, and made a teenage girl actually feel like a teenage girl for a night of music.

Ignore me.... I'll be off somewhere crying all day.

That’s brilliant to read OP.

Thank you for sharing this - these things are actually pretty easy and cheap for venues to put in place but make such a huge difference to people like your daughter. It’s great to read real examples of how to help people.

MacaroonMacaron · 21/02/2024 09:43

Email the venue/security company and tell them too. Describe the people and give their names if you have them - their bosses need to know they did a great job.

MacaroonMacaron · 21/02/2024 09:44

Whoops just spotted you've done this already. Hopefully the feedback will get where it needs to go.

ImRen · 21/02/2024 09:48

What a lovely first post of the day to read. Music has such an amazing effect on people. I hope you got some good photos.

Wishiwasalittlebitsmaller · 21/02/2024 09:49

Isn’t that brilliant. I understand your joy. Your daughter will remember that experience for a long time!

CarrieMoonbeams · 21/02/2024 09:57

Oh my goodness, I don't even have children and this has made me well up too! Well done to everyone involved (including you @Beeninhappytearsallnight for, as a PP said, advocating so well for your daughter). She'll remember that forever.

And @DisforDarkChocolate , I hope things improve for you.🌻

tattychicken · 21/02/2024 09:57

That is wonderful. I've been through similar with my daughter and I totally recognise your utter delight at her being able to do something "normal".

Hopefully this will give her the confidence to go to another gig or similar event and continue to bloom. Smile

UggyPow · 21/02/2024 10:07

My youngest is late teens autistic & has only left the house 4 times in a year, so I totally get it.
This made me cry
So pleased for both you & your daughter 💖

ColleenDonaghy · 21/02/2024 10:11

Had a sniffle reading this on the train earlier, just lovely. Thanks for a good news story to start the day OP Flowers

FunkyMonks · 21/02/2024 10:11

That is so wonderful OP I'm so glad your DD got to experience being at a gig and more importantly seeing a band she loves.
My DS has autism and this is something I hope we can do when he's a little older as he loves music and i think everyone should be able to enjoy that no matter what disabilities you may have.

It's lovely to know the staff at the venue where caring and beyond helpful defiantly worth writing and letting them know if there is anyway that you can even by posting on the bands social media.

Itaintpretty · 21/02/2024 10:21

❤️❤️❤️

Maighnuad · 21/02/2024 10:25

Thats just lovely xx

Trickedbyadoughnut · 21/02/2024 10:25

Yikes, I have something in my eye.

Beeninhappytearsallnight · 21/02/2024 10:45

Thank you all for the kind words.

Dd just has the biggest smile on her face today.

We are on the train home now, but when I get back I'll be writing reviews everywhere. If just one person sees and feels more comfortable attending a gig there, knowing they will be treated as my dd was, then I'll co

Consider it a massive win.

I hope those of you in the same boat as me take a little hope in the fact the world is changing, and our kids WILL be able to do things like going to gigs ❤️

MariaLuna · 21/02/2024 10:50

How wonderful for you and your daughter OP. Bit misty-eyed reading that.

Beeninhappytearsallnight · 21/02/2024 11:19

I just had a lovely email back from the venue, the lady said she had the biggest smile on her face while reading my email too and has passed it onto the security firm as well.

I was not prepared for how emotional I was going to feel today 😭

Oh I love this! It's amazing how much difference some kindness makes when life is a struggle

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 21/02/2024 11:24

Autistic adult here.

This is awesome for your daughter and also for the rest of us.

A venue can make a huge difference to anyone disabled by doing things like this. Or they can make it impossible for us to attend. Hopefully over time the former will become the norm.

Julianne65 · 21/02/2024 11:25

Ahhh..The Barrowlands. Been to many gigs there since the 90s and I’m happy to say the staff are always amazing. I fainted at a Verve gig once and they spotted me and carried me out to the St John Ambulance area. Always feel safe there.

I cried happy tears for you and your daughter. What a lovely experience for you both xx

muddlingthrou · 21/02/2024 11:25

I am far too hormonal to be reading such loveliness right now 😭😭😭

OP - it's so refreshing to read a story about a somewhere going out of their way to actually be accessible to people with additional needs. In my experience, a lot of places pay lip service to accessibility but don't deliver, so this tale has warmed my heart. You are a lovely mum arranging something like this for your daughter, and I hope you make many more wonderful memories together xx

1983Louise · 21/02/2024 11:26

That's so.lovely for you both, I'm shedding a few happy tears for you 😊

NameChange30 · 21/02/2024 11:26

Ahhhh that's wonderful - I'm very happy for you and DD Smile

I'm glad you emailed in. My daughter used to work as an access host for a west end theatre (she has now transferred to a regional theatre). She is autistic herself and it made her day when customers wrote to her bosses about her.
