Been in tears all night - lovely staff and massive breakthrough for dd

My dd has autism and has another condition that causes seizures that have tourettes like tics. Life is really hard for her, she struggles a lot.

She has barely been out of the house for the last few years, part time school, hasn't really been able to do anything or go anywhere.

A band she absolutely loves was playing last night, I bought her pretty expensive VIP tickets as they had a little Q&A thing with 3 acoustic songs, and then I thought we would leave before the actual gig.

I spoke to one of the staff at the venue about possibly letting is out a quieter exit, and off she went, came back with the most lovely security guys. They told me that dd was more than welcome to use the accessible area, that she would be given a seat, explained what to do if she felt anxious at all (go to the person working the accessible area and they could take her to get some air if she felt overwhelmed) and were just absolutely amazing honestly. She sat down, they kept checking in she was OK, even complimented her ear defenders 😭

At one point she needed the toilet so they escorted her down the back stairs, escorted her right to the front of the queue at the toilet, and then waited and back up the same way and got us back to the seating area.

They allowed us to wait until the crowd had cleared before we left as well.

I've spent the whole night crying, I never thought in a million years that my dd would be able to attend a full gig, let alone actually enjoy one. The way those staff went totally above and beyond was absolutely amazing honestly life changing for my dd.

No real point to this post, just a very proud Mum today who is absolutely over the moon at the way all of those lovely security people have been trained, and made a teenage girl actually feel like a teenage girl for a night of music.

Ignore me.... I'll be off somewhere crying all day.

Fantastic. Makes such a huge difference.

Beeninhappytearsallnight · 21/02/2024 08:37

The band was Mother Mother and the venue was Barrowlands in Glasgow. I'm not sure if they have their own security or it's a firm they bring in, either way their security is amazing.

Dd absolutely adores the band, and it's not hard to see why.

Someone passed out in the crowd at one point and the singer spotted and shut the gig down for a good 5 minutes until the person was safe too.

Thank you for all the lovely replies, you're all setting me off even more.

Ah this is lovely, what an amazing night for you all. Well done to the staff for making it inclusive

Hedonism · 21/02/2024 08:40

Oh my, that's brought a tear to my eyes 🥺 how wonderful 🥰

Overtheatlantic · 21/02/2024 08:41

I’m so touched by this post! Might have something in my eye.

Beeninhappytearsallnight · 21/02/2024 08:42

I think the first lady I spoke to was a member of staff for the band, I think, and when I thanked her she said "Music is for everyone to enjoy, no need for thanks" 😭

I'm going to need to hide my own thread at this rate, my eyes are leaking yet again.

Big up to the security firm !!

ScottBakula · 21/02/2024 08:47

Bugger me there are a lot of onions been cut up around here.

It's so nice to read such a positive thread .
I am glad you and your DD had such a good night, its amazing what a different good staff can make.
I am glad you erote that email , I really hope it gets passed onto the staff that looked after you and your DD.

Next time any of us read a thread about how bad/ rude / uncaring all security staff please remember this thread.

Kittybelle123 · 21/02/2024 08:51

This is so lovely, I'm nearly unable to type this through being so choked up.

I've been there too with my DD, London venue (too outing to give details), but your message has brought back those feelings of immense gratitude.

@Beeninhappytearsallnight I can imagine all too well how hard the last few years have been for you - when people are kind like this it touches deeply and stays with you. And to let you know - our little episode of kindness happened two years ago and I still have a little cry when I think about it.

I'm so happy for you and your DD, roll on more gigs in the future 🥰

AgentProvocateur · 21/02/2024 08:53

Barrowlands is my favourite venue, with its bouncy floor and carbolic soap in the ladies! Staff there have always been great.

ShareTheDuvet · 21/02/2024 08:53

How wonderful - and just goes to show what can be achieved with a few simple adjustments and the right attitude 🥰. I hope your DD gets to experience many more special nights out ❤️.

Fannyfiggs · 21/02/2024 08:57

Awww I love this. I'm so pleased your daughter had a wonderful time.

I love The Barrowlands as a venue anyway but when I hear that the staff went above and beyond to make sure your daughter was able to enjoy herself, it makes me love it even more ❤️

I wish your daughter many enjoyable years of gig and concert going.

rivercobbler · 21/02/2024 08:59

I appear to have something in my eye

Such a beautiful story, thank you for sharing and giving us hope for humanity

Rarewaxwing · 21/02/2024 09:01

This is so lovely to read. And, hopefully, this will be the start of something that will continue to bring your DD happiness.

Beeninhappytearsallnight · 21/02/2024 09:05

We actually live quite a while away from Glasgow, I've been to the Barrowlands once before and never really had to deal with any security beyond ticket scanning.

Having read lots of stories about securitys treatment of others like dd in other places I wasn't really expecting a lot tbh.

This is her favourite band in the world though so it was worth a chance and I knew she would get to hear at least 3 songs in a quieter setting and give her some semblance of a 'normal' teenage experience.

This was more than I could have ever expected, surpassed everything I could have hoped for.

It's probably just a normal night to them, but for dd it's been life changing.

Oh my gosh. What a beautiful post to read first thing.
Thank you for sharing your experience OP, it’s made me feel very emotional.

Very best wishes to you and your DD, I hope this is the first of many wonderful experiences out for your DD. The confidence boost must feel amazing for her.

Many thanks to the band, venue and staff too. You should all be proud of yourselves for making the night of this young lady and her Mum. And for bringing a smile and faith in others to us here 🎉😘🍻

Reading that has made my day! I'd be crying too! That's so lovely ❤

DowntonCrabby · 21/02/2024 09:24

That is amazing OP, how fantastic for you both to have such a great experience, I‘ll admit I had a wee tear too!

FiveShelties · 21/02/2024 09:24

That is just lovely - brought a tear to my eye.

TheChosenTwo · 21/02/2024 09:25

Oh this is so lovely 💐
What a lovely experience for you and your dd, and well done for emailing the venue. That will be fed back and will really put some more smiles on faces today.

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 21/02/2024 09:34

That's brilliant OP. I can imagine how much this means to you and your DD.

Weegies are the best folk. So warm and friendly. Excellent to hear this. And Barrowlands was my first gig venue too, a long time ago now!

Ouchmyarse · 21/02/2024 09:37

This is just wonderful.

People like them make so much difference in the world. I hope who ever receives your email praises the all the staff that made it possible for your dd to have an amazing time.
