DS is not so little anymore but this story made me hold him a little bit tighter tonight. I feel so sorry for his family, just hoping he is found soon.

Oh Jesus. That poor poor family

NoEffingWay · 20/02/2024 20:24

I live somewhere in the vicinity and that river bursts it's banks regularly and the nature reserve becomes a big marsh. I just can't get the image out of my mind of how scared he must have been Sad

It's into its third day already. Why were they walking by a flooded, swollen river at twilight with an unrestrained 2 year old?
So awful but I do have questions I'm afraid.

HelloMiss · 20/02/2024 20:31

So it's now a recovery operation

I wonder why they were out walking at that time too!

NoEffingWay · 20/02/2024 20:31

@baileybrosbuildingandloan I'm assuming questions are being asked, but I am staying on the compassionate side of the fence. It's an incredibly sad price to pay for what presumably was a lapse in judgement or concentration. Sad

I'm not sure on this story at all. The police made it clear it is still a 'missing child' enquiry not a recovery effort.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/02/2024 20:32

According to local press. Dad had hold of him, but lost his grip. Poor man.

It was always going to be a recovery sadly, a toddler can't survive in fast flowing water for anything more than a very short time

Toddlerteaplease · 20/02/2024 20:34

@Hellocatshome he was seen going into the water on CCTV. He won't have survived. I just don't think people want too acknowledge it's a recovery operation.

LoseLooseLucy · 20/02/2024 20:34

The whole reporting of this seems weird (over the last few days, not just the linked report).

My apologies it seems there has been an update since I last read the news.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/02/2024 20:34

It was 5pm, not dark.

DrunkenElephant · 20/02/2024 20:35

I wondered how long before the judgemental comments started.

The dad had hold of him and he fell, dad went straight in after him.

I’m sure we’ve all had close calls with our children, or took risks without thinking about it. There but for the grace of God and all that.

Emergency services are looking for a toddler in a river. We all know what the outcome will be. Have some empathy for them and the poor, poor family who must be going out of their minds right now.

itsgettingweird · 20/02/2024 20:35

It's such a reminder how fragile life is.

How terrifying for the family and that poor dad having to live forever knowing he couldn't rescue his little boy.

I hope they find him soon and give the family some closure.

It's still light at 5 and it sounds like a tragic accident. Shame on you for having questions.

Yes that's probably right.

I said twilight. Not dark.

I leave work at 5pm, it's getting lighter but I wouldn't call it light just yet. There's been quite a lot of flooding near me and easy to lose your footing for an adult never mind a toddler

Whattodowithit88 · 20/02/2024 20:39

I think it was just one of those freak accidents. Nothing wrong with a twilight family stroll at all. It obviously was an accident that had terrible consequences.

Poor family and poor lil boy.

Well that’s VERY sad! I am never more than a foot away from my child when we are walking near water.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/02/2024 20:39

@baileybrosbuildingandloan my comment was aimed at people wondering why they were out walking at that time. It doesn't seem odd to me.

Asking questions is not being judgemental.
If questions are asked, things may be prevented from repeating. Maybe a sign is needed "Do not cross footbridge when river is flooded and swollen"
Asking questions is the only way things ever change.

They can fall in with you a foot away! Takes a split second.

I don't know where you live but it's still daylight here at 5.

mitogoshi · 20/02/2024 20:41

It's very sad. The river runs very fast at that point when there's been very heavy rain, my (very stupid) ddog jumped in there once when it was flooded and ended up 300m downstream, in seconds.

Hold your little ones hands tightly near water and consider reins.
