DS is not so little anymore but this story made me hold him a little bit tighter tonight. I feel so sorry for his family, just hoping he is found soon.

@Bloomingdaffs no shame in asking questions tho. Do you think questions weren't asked after any tragedy or disaster?
Questions create dialogue which can potentially prevent repeats. Nothing wrong with questions.

Well that’s VERY sad! I am never more than a foot away from my child when we are walking near water.

Even that seems like too far, flood water moves really quickly, please reconsider

According to local press. Dad had hold of him, but lost his grip. Poor man.

Poor man will never recover.

REINS. I used them because DD was a bolter. Rivers, roads, whatever.

sqirrelfriends · 20/02/2024 20:42

Some of you are truly awful, put yourself in that families position right now and try for once not to be judgemental.

Whattodowithit88 · 20/02/2024 20:39

I think it was just one of those freak accidents. Nothing wrong with a twilight family stroll at all. It obviously was an accident that had terrible consequences.

Poor family and poor lil boy.

That's probably correct. So horrific all round.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 20/02/2024 20:43

Toddlerteaplease · 20/02/2024 20:39

@baileybrosbuildingandloan my comment was aimed at people wondering why they were out walking at that time. It doesn't seem odd to me.

It does by a swollen flooded river tho? Unless it was just fascinating to look at I suppose?

Bloomingdaffs · 20/02/2024 20:36

It's still light at 5 and it sounds like a tragic accident. Shame on you for having questions.

Why shame? It is natural to want to know XYZ, so that a person may be able to rationalize in their head what on earth happened. It is not shameful to wonder.

Doesthisdescribeyou · 20/02/2024 20:45

The river seems to have burst its banks. I don’t know for a fact but I suspect that the flooding took everyone by surprise. Everyone on MN uses reins but in RL, not many people do (probably because a lot of toddlers just don’t tolerate them.)

The dad went after his child, risking his own life in his desperation to save him.

Galeforcewindatmywindow · 20/02/2024 20:46

As a toddler my ds pulled out of my hand on a slipway... Literally just grabbed his coat.. Water is very unforgiving..
Poor family..

No it's not awful. No one has said anything awful. People make tragic mistakes. Asking questions means mistakes may not be made in the future. Nothing wrong with questions.
What's awful is that a small child has died and a family will never be the same. Wondering what led up to this is not. It could save other lives. Please stop turning questions into allegations, which they are not.
I agree with PP re reins, tho MN seems to hate them.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 20/02/2024 20:48

@LadyKenya thank you. You seem to understand!

Doesthisdescribeyou · 20/02/2024 20:49

Seriously, @baileybrosbuildingandloan ? MN LOVE reins. They want to use them for everything, tying children up, strapping them down, every age, every stage!

Anyway, probably not the thread. But I’ve never seen the passion for reins in RL as I have on here.

Duckingella · 20/02/2024 20:49

It was a tragic accident;life can change in the blink of a eye;not far from this incident two toddlers died when a car veered off the road and into their pushchairs;it'll be a recovery effort now so that the family can lay the poor mite to rest.

Redglitter · 20/02/2024 20:49

Hellocatshome · 20/02/2024 20:32

I'm not sure on this story at all. The police made it clear it is still a 'missing child' enquiry not a recovery effort.

A recovery can/will still be classed as a missing person. Leaving it classed as a missing person doesn't mean they believe he's alive & have another line of enquiry or anything. Its still a recovery

Goldbar · 20/02/2024 22:09

Such a shame. There but by the grace of God. I've grabbed my DC many times when they've been too close to water and I can imagine that it only takes a moment's inattention, not realising the danger or just being slow to react for a tragedy like this to happen.

WimbyAce · 20/02/2024 22:43

Dreadfully sad, just can't imagine what they are going through 😔

LovelyBitOfSquirrrel · 20/02/2024 22:51

I live locally to this and it’s been heartbreaking following updates since Sunday. We can hear the helicopters and knowing that they’re out looking for this little boy is devastating.

Just to remind people in this conversation, a boys parents are going through something more traumatic than most can imagine, the emergency services are putting themselves at risk searching and ultimately there will be someone who will find his body. Please be compassionate.

The police have confirmed there is cctv of the accident and it is just that, nothing more than an extremely unfortunate accident.

Itsahouseone · 20/02/2024 22:59

Oh my goodness this is so tragic and terrifying 😢 I have a two year old boy and he will not under any circumstances wear reigns or hold my hand. I often hold his hood or just pick him up but he will point blank refuse and cause a massive tantrum if I make any big deal over holding onto him out a walk. This is so scary how easily this can happen, they are so fast 😞 Definitely puts me off taking even the slightest of risks but I’d almost just need to stay in the house to keep him safe

CeilingGranny · 20/02/2024 23:06

I heard the dad was holding him up at a bridge to see the water and the toddler slipped and fell in. So reins would not have made a difference.

Obviously it was a complete accident and I don't judge him at all. I'm sure he's beating himself up enough already as it is. The poor man.

You'd loop toddler reins over your arm if holding a child up on a bridge so they probably would've made a difference actually. Too late for this family, but maybe time for someone else to make a different choice.

That's pure speculation.

The reins could have also got wrapped around the child's neck on the way down. They could have snapped and been useless anyway. They could have got caught underwater.

You can't prevent accidents. They can happen to any of us at any time. Life just sucks sometimes.

Unless you were there, it's all speculation.

Of course you can prevent accidents. Not all the time, but often.

CeilingGranny · 20/02/2024 23:28

You can make sure you don't have an accident through negligence. Outside of that, no it's just chance.

I've not got any more to say on this. A child is dead. If you want to waste your time blaming the parents or convincing yourself that you're immune to random circumstances, do it by yourself.

Of course it's not, otherwise we wouldn't have seatbelts or helmets or any other safety equipment. There are steps you can take to minimise the chance of an accident/the severity of the outcome of an accident. That's just fact.

You can't reduce the chances of an accident to zero, but there are steps we all take everyday to reduce the chances as much as possible.

I'm not blaming these parents btw. I'm simply responding to your erroneous claim that there are no steps that people can take to safeguard themselves or their children and it's all just a random game of chance. It isn't.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/02/2024 23:39

Can people not just wonder and speculate in their head’s? A baby has died in the most horrific way. A family will never, ever be the same again. Just be grateful it’s not you, hey?
