Or is it just mine?
Cashier is checking that your bags are empty before you pack. Some are asking them to go on the convveyor belt with shopping.

We're in NSW and its a condition of entry to all shops - there are signs everywhere that state this

I think this is the key. If it's a condition of shopping there you put signs up and people can take a view if they can be bothered with it.

But you can't just demand to see in someone's bag without good reason.

If you are bringing bags into a shop to use to pack your shopping in afterwards, in what world is it impinging on your reputation to ask to check them quickly before you start the checkout routine? Have you never been to a gig and had to open your handbag for a quick security inspection? it's the same kind of thing

Not really, the security check is for my benefit and safety.

They did it to me before Christmas, I felt they were treating me like a shoplifter in front of a huge queue. I hope they enjoyed pawing through the charity shop books and fabric I'd bought before going in there! They've now lost a customer...

Yes, which was a bit of a nightmare as I had already been in a few shops and had stuff in my bags. We ended up holding the queue up so I could find receipts to show them. What was a little frustrating is that the shop does not sell the stuff I already had in my bags. I wasn’t popular in the shop that day 🤦‍♀️

That goes far too far and I would have said so.

Items not sold there = none of their business.

Why on earth should you show receipts from another shop? You might not have them!

They've been doing it for quite a while, I've seen quite a few threads about it on here, mumsnetters are really weird about it and take it as a personal insult and affront to their honestly which I find bizarre

I can't fathom why any shop trying to limit theft would be in any way directed at me, why would I care that the till person looks in my empty bags?
