Is your Aldi checking that your shopping bags are empty before you pack?

Or is it just mine?
Cashier is checking that your bags are empty before you pack. Some are asking them to go on the convveyor belt with shopping.

I worked at Aldi twenty years ago and it was the policy even then

Few ask to check

If you buy anything in a box like shoes, they are meant to take the shoes out and check for other items etc

Lots of little checks you won't know exist

daffodilandtulip · 20/02/2024 06:56

Love how they have time for this but not time to check your food isn't flying into your face.

Katieflake · 20/02/2024 06:58

Sounds sensible to me. I can see why they need to.
if you’ve already got something in your bag just show them when you go in-it’s unlikely to be anything they sell anyway.
what does piss me off is when they have several members of staff hanging round the self checkouts but no one on the manned tillls.

Roguebludger · 20/02/2024 06:59

I approach aldi as my weekly race. I've built in the bag checking time as preparation. I put all my bags into 1 big 1 and then spend the time the cashier is checking them to get into position. They have taken all the bags out and I've got the head start before my shopping is all launched at me. I've won every race since they started!

JustLikeAFlower · 20/02/2024 07:00

Not here but I did notice that the spirits had been moved to opposite the tills and my two pack of cod fillets set the alarm off at the door. Honestly tagging cod fillets 😳.

It's standard in every single supermarket in france and always has been.

I offered to show my bags at the checkout at Tesco last time I was back in the uk and the cashier said she's never heard of doing that!

Yes, I remember we had to have our rucksacks sealed into large plastic bags at the entrance to Carrefour years ago. Was a right pain to carry!!

Lightnose · 20/02/2024 07:04

In theory this is a good thing, shoplifting costs all the honest shoppers money, so why would anyone object?. However, anything that someone is actually trying to hide, wouldn't be found by the kind of "check" I've seen.

Globules · 20/02/2024 07:04

Shops are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

I for one am fed up of rising prices while stores try to cover their increased costs of shoplifting. If a cashier looking in/under my bags for a split second means that my food bill stays lower, I'm all for it.

fedupwithbeinghot · 20/02/2024 07:06

Very common in Spain and it has been for at least 20 years. There are lockers at the door of the supermarket for people to leave any items which might arise suspicion

Taylormiffed · 20/02/2024 07:09

Yes. Hampshire.
I take huge ikea bags with me. Luckily as its a stand alone store so never have other shopping already in the bags.

If town centres store bring in the policy they'll be wading through what I've already bought in other shops. That'll be fun for them.

IChangedForThis · 20/02/2024 07:10

They do it when they feel like it in my Aldi. I've been asked to show my bags are empty a few times.

Mykittensmittens · 20/02/2024 07:11

It’s been a while in our Lidl but not Aldi. But then I thought that’s by our Lidl has mirrored panels on the opposing till side, so the assistant on the till can see the trolley. To be fair I don’t mind them asking.

There was an item in the news a day or two ago about aggression to staff in stores being 50% higher than a year or so ago. Our Lidl till staff now wear body cams - which is very telling.

aldi not asking to check anything yet. I got two bags of logs on Sunday and didn’t lift them out of the trolley just gave the code, and she didn’t ask to look under those either. They did tell me they had removed the carrier bags though and you have to ask for one as everyone was pinching them and not paying.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 20/02/2024 07:13

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. It honestly doesn't bother me. I know I haven't shoplifted and if that is what they need to do to discourage others and hence keep the prices low then so be it.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 20/02/2024 07:14

I just leave my bags in the car and pack from my trolley into the boot.
I appreciate this is only possible if you've driven to the shop though.

Life is too short to get upset about shops doing routine checks to reduce shoplifting.

Birdsworth · 20/02/2024 07:16

They have been doing this in ours for about six months. I've bought string bags.

When I lived in Australia people would show a person on the door the contents of their actual handbag as well as any shopping bags they were carrying on the way out.

fluffyduvetcover · 20/02/2024 07:19

Yep, Kent here and I've been asked to show inside my bags at the manned till on last two visits

Kalevala · 20/02/2024 07:23

My colleague routinely gets accused of shoplifting as she takes her lunch in to get a few more items before getting a lift to work. Lunch is often fruit and veg from the same shop.

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 20/02/2024 07:32

Mine make us lift our shopping bags up so that the cashier can check if there is anything underneath them in the trolley

Willmafrockfit · 20/02/2024 07:34

they did when i went
but not on the self service
good idea

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 20/02/2024 07:34

To be fair, I did once miss a pack of ham as it was wedged between my bag and the side of the trolley.

Flavabobble · 20/02/2024 07:36

No, because I make it perfectly clear that they're empty, always have - worked in retail though. I wouldn't get upset or offended if they did further checks.

NotFastButFurious · 20/02/2024 07:36

Never had it happen or seen it happen. I always put my bag of bags on the trolley under the handle then have the bags open in the trolley ready to pack straight into.

CadyEastman · 20/02/2024 07:36

No but I was in M&S last week and there was a woman on the self service till behind me.

Supervisor of the tills came over and said "you haven't scanned that salmon have you?" The Woman didn't even look worried, just scanned it as though the Supervisor was a nuisance.

Gingerbread981 · 20/02/2024 07:37

Yes, every time!

Saltandpeppero · 20/02/2024 07:41

Not at my local Aldi but they do watch very closely at the self service checkout
