Is your Aldi checking that your shopping bags are empty before you pack?

Or is it just mine?
Cashier is checking that your bags are empty before you pack. Some are asking them to go on the convveyor belt with shopping.

if they suspect - because they saw you, for eg - that you have shoved things in your personal bag then sure, they can detain you and call the police.

If you are bringing bags into a shop to use to pack your shopping in afterwards, in what world is it impinging on your reputation to ask to check them quickly before you start the checkout routine? Have you never been to a gig and had to open your handbag for a quick security inspection? it's the same kind of thing.

The poster I quoted said obviously not personal bags and I was asking why not, as they could be used to hide things the same?

Kalevala · 20/02/2024 12:42

My colleague has taken her lunch and personal items into the supermarket to buy a few more things before work and then has been accused of shoplifting her lunch. So it's not always a case of being ok if you have nothing to hide.

and that is fine. Shop elsewhere. But it is becoming more and more a thing as a) people are finally bringing reusable bags/boxes to pack their shopping in and b) shoplifting is a massive growth industry.

When every shop is doing it, where will you shop then?

not sure why you've directed that at me, i never said i had an issue with it.

and i explained to you why they don't check personal bags. They aren't allowed, afaik, to ask to look in your handbag unless and until they suspect, with good reason, that you have lifted something.

probably quoted the wrong post.

APurpleSquirrel · 20/02/2024 14:32

Not happened to me yet - shop in Aldi every week - but I put everything back in the trolley & pack at the bench. My bag of bags is tucked under the trolley on the shelf bit.

maddiemookins16mum · 20/02/2024 14:51

Twice in the last six months. I have no problem with it.

Littlestlolo · 20/02/2024 15:11

Yes, which was a bit of a nightmare as I had already been in a few shops and had stuff in my bags. We ended up holding the queue up so I could find receipts to show them. What was a little frustrating is that the shop does not sell the stuff I already had in my bags. I wasn’t popular in the shop that day 🤦‍♀️

OK, the second paragraph had me confused as I have brought my personal bag into the shop and intend to pack shopping into it. I would use my personal bag for top up shops.

Kalevala · 20/02/2024 17:29

So, if I have personal items in my bag they can't check it before I pack it?

Verv · 20/02/2024 17:32

No but the self service checkout sets up a flashing light whenever I scan and add baked beans.
Apparently they're classed as a high risk item in my Aldi and the fella has to come and check.

They have no right to go through your bags.

RubiesAndRaindrops · 20/02/2024 18:13

Yes. I had shopping already in a carrier bag of items I'd bought next door the cashier asked to look & said ok we don't sell any of that - I was slightly surprised in that do they know everything they sell I don't imagine I'd know at glance in their shoes (it was mostly stationery to be fair, but if I'd bought the branded chocolate that both shops sell how would they know? I always say yes to getting a receipt now just in case). They regularly check bags now it used to only be occasionally. Last time the cashier apologised for having to ask to look so we had a brief chat about it (I don't mind being asked, I know its not personal and its probably not fun for her either) - shoplifting has increased massively apparently. I overheard an assistant at my local poundland say they won't switch on the self service tills before a certain time of day any more either because of shoplifting.

Workingmytickettoparadise · 20/02/2024 18:29

I don’t know but the sales assistants are the ones keeping the plastic bags and scanning them at the self service till.

Coconutter24 · 20/02/2024 18:54

I always pack at the car so no bags in the trolley but I would normally buy like 12 bottles of fizzy pop and just put 3 on the belt save lifting them all a few times which has always been ok but now they want them all on the belt. It’s annoying but I do it cos I’ve nothing to hide in my trolley and certainly wouldn’t give a cashier a hard time for doing their job

That happened to me once.
By the time I'd had to wait for assistance to approve my bags, wait for assistance to check my shopping bags, wait for assistance to check my baked beans, wait for assistance because I wanted a pack of paracetamol and there's one person on the checkouts (who is also responsible for handing out bags individually because people can't be trusted to scan a bag) it put me off going to that particular store again.

Going through self checkout shouldn't take 10 minutes.

buswankerz · 20/02/2024 19:29

I've not had to do this in my area but I wouldn't care if they asked me.

This is driving me mad! Why can't we have some form of facial recognition so scan your driving license or passport it logs your details the AI monitors your shop. Job done and much quicker. AI logs a steal then your blocked from self service and have to wait for a manned till.

That's basically how Amazon Fresh shops are meant to work. The AI camera tracks what you're picking up and you're charged for it when you leave the store. No tills involved. I've never tried it myself though.

artfuldodgerjack · 21/02/2024 09:25

Yes. They insisted on checking the flat, folded and clearly empty bags I had 😂

anyoneanyoneanyone · 21/02/2024 14:36

People stealing baked beans :(

NovemberAutumn · 21/02/2024 14:38

Yes ours are as well.

But I am now 50 and from Australia and worked as a checkout operator in my teens. We were required to check all bags- including handbags and that was normal. I went back to Australia last year for the first time in years and had forgotten that they station a staff member at the exit of places like Kmart and you have to show your bags and receipts to them before leaving.

It doesn 't bother me at all but I can understand people may consider it a violation.

NovemberAutumn · 21/02/2024 14:45

Yes and I have also started always taking a receipt for everything.

But it;s interesting what a pp says about self service tills not being opened until a certain time due to shoplifting.. oiur Aldi has also started massively restricting when ss tills are open and always have 2 staff now. I'd not twigged that might be the reason.

But last weekend I was at a bookshop and they had just called the shopping centre security because someone walked in and completely openly shoved about 15 mangas and related toys into a large bag and walked out.

BudgetFoodie · 21/02/2024 14:47

Yes.
I usually leave mine in the car and pack from trolly into boot.

mitogoshi · 21/02/2024 15:09

Not here but I use self check out. They have posted a member of staff there though as has Lidl (apparently the school kids were stealing pastries)
