Is your Aldi checking that your shopping bags are empty before you pack?

Or is it just mine?
Cashier is checking that your bags are empty before you pack. Some are asking them to go on the convveyor belt with shopping.

It should be, one to check for shoplifting and 2 to maybe make people realise shops don't usually have a list of people they pick on just for the fun of it

Gingerkittykat · 20/02/2024 03:52

Nope, no security guards or bag checks in the two Aldis I shop at in Central Scotland.

bradpittsbathwater · 20/02/2024 04:01

No I haven't had this in any shops but I wouldn't be offended. Shoplifting is rife at the moment.

treacledan71 · 20/02/2024 04:17

I was told in Lidl they don't have quick tills as people tend to shop lift on them ie. Scanning and not paying. Totally different thing but shopping, I hang around near an asda for a lift home once I get off the train sometimes and get a few bits. Twice now no bags at all. I know you are supposed to take your own but I don't always know I am waiting there and go straight from work. Worker said people have had to put shopping back sometimes.

GreatGateauxsby · 20/02/2024 04:18

Yes. They check everyones in ours.
The shoplifting is out of control.

I have seen more than one thief customer kicking off because they "were about to unpack those steaks" / "gerroff! you cant legally touch my things" / are outraged "this bitch is accusing me of shoplifting".

We show them our empty bags because who really cares??? and get on with our life.

gerispringer · 20/02/2024 04:34

why would anyone object ? Apart from those who have something to hide? If you go in with other shopping, presumably you have the receipt and it’s not stuff from Aldi anyway. I’ve seen people stash stuff in pushchairs and not pay for them , then kick off when the security challenges them.

teatimeplease · 20/02/2024 04:37

Nope not had to do it here yet! Can't say I'd be bothered if I did, it's pretty clear that it's a not an individual thing so absolutely no need to be offended - it would also take 2 seconds to lift your bags to show their empty soots not exactly a hardship

SarahAndGoose · 20/02/2024 04:42

I wouldn't care but the bottom of my buggy is seldom empty and it wouldn't be a quick job to unload it to show to wasn't Aldi stuff. I'd assume this is the same for many people...

MaitlandGirl · 20/02/2024 04:48

We're in NSW and its a condition of entry to all shops - there are signs everywhere that state this.

I don't see an issue with it - in BigW and Kmart they also check your receipts on the way out.

All I do in Aldi, is show the cashier my bag of bags, make some dodgy lame joke about how it's a bag of bags and random receipts, laugh painfully at my bad jokes and then get packing. It takes seconds but it's a condition of the cashiers employment - they get sanctioned if they don't and I'm not interested in getting anyone into trouble.

Garlickit · 20/02/2024 04:50

Not yet, but someone did a runner from a self-check the other day when I was there. I certainly wouldn't blame them for trying to reduce theft.

spanishviola · 20/02/2024 04:59

I saw four or five staff trying to restrain someone in Aldi a while back. Alarms were going off and there was a tug of war with a shopping bag. It was really violent with a lot of shouting and a bit scary as people didn’t really know what was going on as it was a small store and they were in the entrance so no-one could leave.I don’t want to see scenes like this when I go shopping. I complained to Aldi and they asked me in a rude tone what did I want them to do to prevent shoplifting. I said not to fight with customers in the store but perhaps use their extensive CCTV to identify the person and ban them from entering again. The whole thing was deeply unpleasant.

PrincessOfPreschool · 20/02/2024 05:04

Mine did the other day. Got out of her seat to look. I think she was newish. The old staff can't be bothered! It doesn't bother me either way.

What did upset me was in Morrisons I used the self checkout. It did the 'surprising item in bagging area' and then she was basically heavily implying I had nicked something because she couldn't be bothered to go through the receipt and check against my items (I had 23 items by that point - it's actually a self checkout with a moving belt so designed for a decent sized shop). I've never had that before in any shop.

fungibletoken · 20/02/2024 05:44

I haven't experienced this yet but heard of it in other stores. We were, however, followed very closed by Lidl security when we went shopping about 30 mins before close (so when it was super quiet) armed with several empty bags for life. I'd have preferred them just asking us to show our bags than trailing us from about two paces for a whole weekly shop!

BernadetteStBernard · 20/02/2024 05:49

Yes occasionally. As others have said it is a policy now I think.

Pollyannamex · 20/02/2024 05:53

A cashier told me their bosses check the cameras to make sure they are doing it

I don’t care it takes me about a second to lift up my bags, it’s not a big deal.

jamaisjedors · 20/02/2024 06:01

It's standard in every single supermarket in france and always has been.

I offered to show my bags at the checkout at Tesco last time I was back in the uk and the cashier said she's never heard of doing that!

NervousNortherner · 20/02/2024 06:01

It's due to the increase in shoplifting, why are people so precious
If you've nothing to hide it takes seconds. I wouldn't be bothered at all

Lightlysaltedcashews · 20/02/2024 06:08

I assumed it was policy too as staff are indiscriminate in asking from what I've seen. Also I imagine excessive shop lifting could lead to price rises to offset losses

Kalevala · 20/02/2024 06:12

Do they check personal bags that may already have things like sanpro and lip balm in them?

Strangeness · 20/02/2024 06:14

It wouldn’t be unexpected in my local Aldi.
Massive shoplifting problem.
In Germany I remember this being policy years ago.

TrustPenguins · 20/02/2024 06:16

I've had this. It didn't bother me. Presume they are checking everyone due to the rise in shoplifting.

AndThatWasNY · 20/02/2024 06:17

No but I realised half way through packing I had inadvertently stolen some blueberries. But fessed up and paid for them.

cerisepanther73 · 20/02/2024 06:22

@Sunshineandrainbow

With cost of living crisis

and the spiralling rise of shop lifting sky 🚀 rocketing to such an extent

I can see why Supermarkets are being extra aware about this issue

hardly susprisely really..

Bandol · 20/02/2024 06:39

It’s standard in France and has been for many years. At my local massive supermarket that’s attached to a shopping centre you have to get your bags of shopping from other shops stapled shut. And if you don’t want your bag stapled shut they’ll keep it at the security stand.

On the other hand, it’s very common if you’re just getting a small amount of shopping to not take a basket and just fill your carrier bags as you go round and empty them at the checkout. So it makes sense to want to check your bags at the checkout.

MuskyDog · 20/02/2024 06:54

Yes Lidl and Aldi do and it's one of the reasons I avoid shopping there. The customer service, culture and atmosphere is depressing. The produce quality is poor. I'm lucky I can afford to shop elsewhere but if I were on a tight budget or had limited access to supermarkets I think I would just have to bear it as I don't think complaining or feedback would change anything. Their staff have the same disdainful careless attitude as Co Op staff.
