I never actually realised that Tate and Lyle Golden syrup had a dead liion on it surrounded by bees

And now the "woke" brigade have "forced" them to change it to a lion instead because it offends children,

Granted, I haven't had it for a while but I never really looked too much at the image.

I can though see why they might want to update the image - brands do that kind of thing and I am not sure it has anything to do with being "woke".

The sugary treat's makers have changed its iconic labelling because it is offensive to youngsters.

My kids pointed this out to me recently. In all my years I had never noticed it was dead

MadeOfAllWork · 19/02/2024 22:15

It’s always been that, for over 100 years I’d guess.

Testina · 19/02/2024 22:17

I grew up on this, and have bought sporadically for baking for 40 years of adulthood… never noticed it was dead!!

Hellocatshome · 19/02/2024 22:17

I had never noticed the lion was dead. I wonder the reasoning behind having that on a tin or golden syrup?

vocalfryspeppermintcream · 19/02/2024 22:18

I think the painting is in Manchester Art Gallery.

It’s from a bible story I believe.

BabyHaribo · 19/02/2024 22:18

Isn't from a bible story?

SarahAndQuack · 19/02/2024 22:19

Goodness, the Old Testament needs updating.

Zampa · 19/02/2024 22:19

I love that image and the Bible quote "out of the strong came something sweet".

Looks like the tin is staying the same same they've just updated the squeezy bottle.

CatrionaCat · 19/02/2024 22:19

It's a riddle from the Bible, "Out of the strong came forth sweetness; out of the eater came something to eat." That's off the top of my head but it's definitely something like that.

Blanketpolicy · 19/02/2024 22:20

Out of the strong came forth sweetness

is what it says on the tin, something from the bible

Barleysugar86 · 19/02/2024 22:21

Always thought the lion was dancing with bees. Doesn't look dead to me but interesting to hear the backstory.

Glad it's not just me!

DS never really had syrup before - he wouldn't believe me that it came in a tin.

Yes! It's called The Desert. No proven link but a very strong story behind it being a likely inspiration.

It’s from an OldTestament verse “Out of strength comes forth sweetness”.

cakeorwine · 19/02/2024 22:23

So what design shall we put on our new tins?

How about a dead lion?
And bees....

Really sorry can I be pedantic for a moment and point out that it's Lyle's Golden syrup not Tate and Lyle's? Mr Lyle doesn't get his name on the art galleries, Mr Tate doesn't get his name on the syrup tins. Sorry I'll shut up now.

Yeah, but Victorians, they were like that.

And most of them would have understood the Biblical reference.

I really hope that you're a distant descendant of Mr Lyle, hunting down all who mention golden syrup online, and setting the record straight.

BishyBarnyBee · 19/02/2024 22:35

Who are this "woke brigade?"

Can anyone join or are there specific membership requirements?

Imonthebloodyphone · 19/02/2024 22:38

I don't think it's anything to do with woke; to be honest in 2024, it is pretty weird to have a dead animal on your food packaging.

I know the story because my grandma explained its origins when I was a little girl, but I'll happily bet that most British residents, wherever they were born and whatever their skin colour, wouldn't have a clue what it was about. It just doesn't speak to 21st century citizens like it did to Victorian ones. The responses to this thread rather illustrate my point.

I don't like the new generic graphic lion though; it looks like a football mascot.

Damn that's me outted I'll have to name change now. We are still bitter about the art galleries 😉.

Sadly I'm not sitting in a mansion as the heir to a syrup fortune but my Mum did work for Tate & Lyle many years ago.
