I never actually realised that Tate and Lyle Golden syrup had a dead liion on it surrounded by bees

And now the "woke" brigade have "forced" them to change it to a lion instead because it offends children,

Woke brigade forces Lyle’s Golden Syrup to ditch iconic logo | UK | News | Express.co.uk

Granted, I haven't had it for a while but I never really looked too much at the image.

I can though see why they might want to update the image - brands do that kind of thing and I am not sure it has anything to do with being "woke".

The sugary treat's makers have changed its iconic labelling because it is offensive to youngsters.

Humph, what Philistines...

I see what you did there.

MadeOfAllWork · 20/02/2024 07:50

I have to question why they are changing it given that it seems I and about three others are the only people who ever noticed it was a dead lion.

soupfiend · 20/02/2024 07:54

I knew it was a dead lion and that its something to do with Sampson although didnt know the full story

But I dont eat syrup. It looks nice but theres nothing I would do with it and I imagine it makes a mess so I wouldnt buy it

I dont think they should change the image even if it is only on the squeezy bottle, whats the point in changing it, its symbolic of its origins.

BouleDeSuif · 20/02/2024 07:58

I've always known. I think my grandad told me.
Golden syrup is the only thing to have on crumpets.

maslinpan · 20/02/2024 08:01

When I was on the Emirates cable car, we flew over the Golden Syrup factory. They really missed a trick by not having a statue of a dead lion proudly on display.

C1N1C · 20/02/2024 08:06

I'm against the Cadbury logo... it's offensive to those who didn't learn cursive.

It's outdated and has no place in today's society.

Eye roll

Dave Gorman does a great piece on this:

I am now wondering what's on the black treacle tin.

buzzlightyearsaway · 20/02/2024 08:16

I noticed that as a child and it has traumatised me for 3 decades

Now i have an irrational fear of dead lions.

So it's about time they changed it

InMySpareTime · 20/02/2024 08:22

Black treacle has the lion too, and is Lyle not Tate.

Good point what is on there?

Who are this "woke brigade?"

Can anyone join or are there specific membership requirements?

I’ll get you an application form. Wokerati are down the corridor on the left though, are you sure you didn’t want to join them instead?

We send around a copy of the Woke Agenda once a month, let me know if you want to add an item.

Also a fly-blown lion.

EBearhug · 20/02/2024 08:37

It's interesting they stayed with Abram Lyle, despite utterly being over 100 years since they became Tate & Lyle.

MrsCarson · 20/02/2024 08:41

I hope they dig their heels in and refuse to change the can. and If all those wokies stop buying it in protest, they'll be missing out on the deliciousness. I doubt they'd make a dent in sales.

Beargrumps22 · 20/02/2024 08:43

I love the tin grew up with the lion and was fascinated with the Bible story. shame how everything has to change to keep folk happy these days what is wrong with tradition and the like

InMySpareTime · 20/02/2024 08:44

I don't think "the woke brigade" are half as offended as they're made out to be. There seems to be more outrage about what they'd probably presumably find offensive than anyone actually saying they would personally find something offensive.

Bouledeneige · 20/02/2024 08:46

As a child I used to look at the tin at tea time and noticed the dead lion and didn't seem to have any curiosity about it. I was more interested by the 'by royal appointment' 'honi spot qui mal y pense.' The motto of the royal garter.

But what came as a surprise to me was the link between the brand and the Tate gallery and the fact that the gallery had to commission UCL to research the links between the brand and slavery - which was indirect (since both Tate and Lyle were not born when slavery was abolished) but because the sugar industry was historically based on slave labour in the West Indies. I can imagine they were relieved not to have to change the Gallery's brand which is so well known.

Still can't quite believe I used to eat syrup sandwiches. No wonder I had shit teeth!

SirChenjins · 20/02/2024 08:47

Do these professionally offended people manage to walk and talk at the same time, I wonder? Hold down jobs? Leave the house?

On a separate note, I only found out recently you can make your own golden syrup! Mind. Blown.

mumda · 20/02/2024 08:50

Bees don't make Syrup.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/02/2024 08:51

I haven't read every post so someone may have already posted this (although if they have clearly not everyone read it). They're not flies they're bees making honey hence the sweetness. It's from the Bible - Book of Judges (Chapter 14 verse 14). People who object to any kind of RE in school (Education not Indoctrination) won't get the context of this kind of reference examples of which which are actually all around us.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 20/02/2024 08:51

Just checked my squeezy bottle and definitely a dead lion with bees..never noticed before!

Aberdonians know there's no fancy piece to match a hot rowie with a lick of syrup.
