I never actually realised that Tate and Lyle Golden syrup had a dead liion on it surrounded by bees

And now the "woke" brigade have "forced" them to change it to a lion instead because it offends children,

Woke brigade forces Lyle’s Golden Syrup to ditch iconic logo | UK | News | Express.co.uk

Granted, I haven't had it for a while but I never really looked too much at the image.

I can though see why they might want to update the image - brands do that kind of thing and I am not sure it has anything to do with being "woke".

The sugary treat's makers have changed its iconic labelling because it is offensive to youngsters.

I'm glad they're only changing the squeezy bottle, not the tin - the whole design of the tin is absolutely iconic and reminds me of baking when I was a child.

As for the Bible story - good grief, how very weird!

And as for the quality of the 'journalism' - it's Express clickbait. The same Express who literally every winter print a story about how the whole country is going to be buried in snow and blizzards.

HemlockSoup · 20/02/2024 00:04

people can be so unobservant

Runningwildish · 20/02/2024 00:09

I've always known, it'll be a shame to change it. Out of the strong came forth sweetness

DiscoBeat · 20/02/2024 00:11

That's horrible!

Runningwildish · 20/02/2024 00:12

It's from before the times of science. People believed in spontaneous generation.
they thought that flies etc actually were created by the dead animals.
they didn't understand lifecycles and germ theory

theconfidenceofwho · 20/02/2024 00:22

Every day is a school day. I went to Sunday school religiously as a child and know lots of Bible verses etc but never knew this (& never realised it was a dead lion!)

FreeRider · 20/02/2024 00:57

Personally I'm glad they are removing it, it's always bothered me ...I love lions and golden syrup and seeing a dead one on the tin always upset me!

I'm not woke, just soft.

EBearhug · 20/02/2024 01:31

A dead lion's one thing, but if you're going to be woke, cane sugar had a fair bit to do with slavery, which is surely more of a concern than dodgy tales from the Bible?

Happyinarcon · 20/02/2024 01:48

I wish the press would stop finding things for people to bicker about. Half the time I wonder if they’re just making things up to to cause some controversy

Humph, what Philistines...

Okay this made me laugh!

cakeorwine · 20/02/2024 03:50

It would make for an interesting AIBU

My new husband has come up with a riddle and given 30 people a week to solve it.

If they lose, they give him 30 items of clothes.
They are annoyed as they can't get the riddle. so they have threatened to set fire to my house.

Should I ask him the answer and then tell them?
What's the worst that can happen?

My DM told me that the golden syrup was made from dead lions.
I believed her, I was 6 at the time.
Still ate it.
😁😁.

Itisnearlyspring · 20/02/2024 05:40

The express can't write a single article without using at least one of the following words: woke, snowflake or avocado.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 20/02/2024 06:05

I never even noticed what was on the tin . Not that I normally buy it.

Syrup: like the honey you’d get if it was made inside a dead lion. Sounds like a winning tagline.

This is brilliant. Can’t believe they didn’t go with this one.

I had never noticed the lion was dead. I wonder the reasoning behind having that on a tin or golden syrup?

Awwwww 😁

Taylormiffed · 20/02/2024 07:31

I knew it was dead. Reminds me of Aslan. I can't believe it's been changed.

coatonthewashingline · 20/02/2024 07:33

it all comes from the weird belief that bees were born from dead bulls - swarms wd come from their carcasses. Called bugonia. Deeply strange!

reclaimmyboobs · 20/02/2024 07:34

DD has golden syrup from the tin on her porridge and has never once even noticed a lion; why would she when there is SYRUP to get ALL OVER THE TABLE
