Names that became negatively viral

Just wondering what names became negatively viral and how people feel about their name now.

My name was in a UK sketch show early 2000s and I hated it for a while but now no one remembers it and its gone back to being a classic name again.

Only if you use certain social media. As I said upthread I'm close to two Karens and neither of them are bothered by it. One isn't on social media at all so it has almost entirely passed her by. The other just ignores it.

The entire concept of it, of using a name try and silence women of a certain age speaking out, is awful and infuriating. But I dont think disproportionately affects women actually called Karen.

It has affected me BIG time.

Well there's Becky which was made popular by the Beyonce song and is commonly used by black women to describe white women who date or "take" black men. 🇺🇸 stats show that black men and East Asian women are MOST likely groups to marry outside of their race, therefore many EA men and black women probably feel frustrated. With black men often marrying white women, coupled with the history of slavery in America and particular mistreatment of black American women, terms like "Becky" seem to have emerged as a way to vocalise frustration. Would be interesting to know if there's a name for the men.

Karen was originally used to critique racist white women, has now become a catch-all term for targeting any white woman. Same thing will probably happen with Becky.

Shaneekwa is a name often used in a negative light for black women, playing into stereotypes of loud, ignorant and sassy behavior.

Stacey and Chad are often thrown around as stereotypical labels for young white people. "Stacey" is usually seen as a shallow, slutty, image obsessed white girl who cares a bit too much about her social status and looks. "Chad" is the go to name for a privileged, haughty white guy.

My name is Karen. I am not a complainer and never ever demand to speak to the manager. I am not racist. I do not have a Karen haircut. I am only 28 so not middle aged. The whole Karen thing is awful. 😪 I came off social media as I couldn’t comment on anything without someone calling me a Karen. I only ever comment nice things. I walked past a cafe the other day that says ‘Karen’s aren’t welcome’. I haven’t done anything wrong and don’t deserve to be treated this way. It is a name my parents gave to me. I’d love to change it but my parents would be upset by this. Would you change your name? I am always embarrassed by by name.

That sounds horrible… I do think it’s perfectly alright to change your name if that’s what you want / want for yourself.

your parents might be upset and that would be (somewhat) understandable. But you’re the one that actually has to live with the name!

would it be easier with a smaller change? Karin? Karina? Carine/Carina? Katrin/Catherine?

I'm an Emily and used to watch little Britain.

I have no idea what you mean.

DyslexicPoster · 19/02/2024 11:43

If your a loud complaining man your a "lad".

I asked my dd school for a subject access request and was met with I'm aggressive with a reputation by the head! Now he has to deal directly with my stocky tattood dh.

It's like things go full circle for woman and the only way we can be accepted is to be silent. Even my sister uses the term Katen and sees herself as a feminist. We women do ourselves zero favours some times.

@LauderSyme

I'm sorry because I am sure you did not intend this but I found your reply to @gemini1990 to be incredibly condescending and belittling. The OP didn't ask for TV sketch names, the post read 'Just wondering what names became negatively viral and how people feel about their name now'.

Posters also suggested the names 'Myra', 'Rose' and 'Oscar'.

.. Calling out people for answering a question in a way you deem inappropriate is horribly oppressive .

Edited

According to MN I'm good at being condescending. I do find it quite a helpful weapon at times. However I did not intend to beliitle @gemini1990, I only wanted to point out that their choice of name jarred me, coming as it did after talk of kids and comedy shows.

If you think what I said was horribly oppressive then you don't understand what horribly oppressive means. There's another dose of condescension for you 😉

TBF it's a thread that's also mentioned Maxine, Myra and Adolf

Maxine, Myra and Adolf were the evil perpetrators not the innocent victim. There's a big difference.

Not in the context of the thread there isn't. OP asked for names that became unpopular due to negative connotations. That is as true of Madeleine, that took a big drop in 2007/8, as it is of Myra. It isn't saying both were perpetrators.

I know a Jo Lee, and someone always sings Jolene to her

I knew a Jolene, when I worked in an office. I regularly used to have to phone her (she worked for another company that we worked with). I would ask to speak to Jolene, and the person on the other end of the line would call across their office 'Jolene, Jolene'. I used to have to stifle the giggles, and would have the song stuck in my head for aged after.

For what its worth, I actually think it's a nice name!

sparkle58 · 19/02/2024 12:44

I knew a Kimberley and after Victoria Wood started talking about ‘my friend Kimberley’ was referred to as Kim-bur-lee in a gormless voice from then on, so when she met new people she started introducing herself as Kim

Iago's never recovered, which is a shame as it's a lovely name. Bloody Shakespeare.

HectorPlasm · 19/02/2024 13:45

Eartha is rhyming slang - going for an Eartha

No-one mentioned Bob of Blackadder fame?

Id just use a diminutive. Karrie perhaps? Ren? Or just use a middle name / random name for social media

Personally I've always liked the name Carrie, so I'd go by that. (Not that you should have to change it because of misogynists)
