Names that became negatively viral

Just wondering what names became negatively viral and how people feel about their name now.

My name was in a UK sketch show early 2000s and I hated it for a while but now no one remembers it and its gone back to being a classic name again.

I watched a programme about the Big Freeze of 63 today. Gloria Hunniford was in it talking about her late daughter Caron Keating being a baby at that time. It annoyed me to think of her lovely late daughter's name being trashed by misogynists. Caron was a Blue Peter presenter and was great

I am from Dublin and glad now my dad did not get his own way in calling me Sharon. (The movie The Snapper ruined that name)

Susan was one that was decimated over the years but then it changed to Karen somehow. I am sure it was originally Susan though?

For me I'm referring to little Britain my names Emily and I'm a lady. Iver heard that a lot early 2000s and even now I can't say my names Emily, I have to introduce myself another way.

Does anyone actually knows where the "Karen" things started. It really annoys me and I'm quick to pull up anyone I hear using it

ohdamnitjanet · 19/02/2024 07:36

Someone I worked with about 3 years ago called her twin boys Ron and Reggie. I despair of the human race sometimes.

YogaLite · 19/02/2024 07:43

I still like the name Karen and I know one lovely lady (princess Di look-a--like), I don't think she has been affected by the negative connotations, I hope not anyway.

I know a Jo Lee, and someone always sings Jolene to her

I know a Jolene.
It's not bad to be called after a Dolly song!

I know loads of Emilys and have never thought this. It's not something I've heard anyone saying either. Weird.

MorrisZapp · 19/02/2024 08:56

I'm a Karen and I love my name. Nobody has ever used it rudely to my face. Let's not give passing trends (in this case a misogynist one) any more credence or oxygen than they deserve.

Karen is a term used as slang typically for a middle-class white american woman who is perceived as entitled or excessively demanding beyond the scope of what is considered to be normal behavior and decorum.[1] The term is often portrayed in memes depicting middle-class white women who "use their white and class privilege to demand their own way".[1][2] Depictions include demanding to "speak to the manager", being racist, or wearing a particular bob cut hairstyle.[3] It was popularized in the aftermath of the Central Park birdwatching incident in 2020.[2]
The term has been considered pejorative by those who believe it is racist, sexist, ageist, classist, and controlling women's behavior.[3] The term has occasionally been applied to male behavior.[3][4]
During 2020, the term increasingly appeared in media and social media, including during the COVID-19 pandemic and George Floyd protests.[1] The Guardiann^ called 2020 "the year of Karen".[5]

I wonder if Emily is an age thing? I was ealy 20's when little Britain came out and everyone I knew was watching it, especially in the offices I was working in, so it was in my face.
If you were older or younger it quite possibly passed you by.

Blimey! I love Little Britain and this would never have occurred to me!

I feel like anyone csn become a victim of this sort of thing though. I went to primary school with a girl whose surname was Morrison. She got teased every time the school bus went past the supermarket.

It's not Lauren but that's my sister and I've never seen that connection before.
I'm an Emily

I think both of you have lovely names

A girl at my primary school was called Myra, she was born in the 70's so the connotations would have been known before she was named. I obviously didn't know anything about Myra Hindley at primary school but when I was older I did think it was an odd choice of name

One of my cousins is a Myra (a nice name, when you take away the Evil woman connected to it)

She was born in the 1950s though

DappledThings · 19/02/2024 09:16

I'm the same age as you I think, Little Britain was big but I don't remember anyone ever making a thing of the name Emily from that sketch.

My oldest friend and my SIL are both called Karen. Neither of them have ever been bothered by the "Karen" thing. If you're not a regular user of specific social media where the memes are it can totally pass you by.

Your mother had three sets of twins? And named one set Whiskey and Brandy? Um, OK.

Nicebloomers · 19/02/2024 09:20

I love the name Basil and I’m hoping the younger generation are historically far enough away to not associate it with Fawlty Towers. That said, Cybil is also a wonderful, classical name.

Yes Twins run in our family.
Sadly one twin did pass away.

I have a distant relative called Carona. Different spelling but you can how that might have been annoying for her a few years ago
