What in hells teeth is this? Cystitis?

Never have I experienced this torture!

Bladder seemingly can’t hold any more than a thimble full of urine despite already drinking 3 pints of iced water this morning.
Have to get to the toilet immediately as the pain and pressure is awful and I can’t hold it.
When I do wee, I get strong awful spasms that make my eyes water.
urine is clear, no colour to it (due to the volume of water probably).

Ive had some paracetamol for the pain, can’t leave the house due to pain, urgency and frequency of needing the loo.

Any top tips for those experienced? How long will it last??

Sounds like cystitis, you'll need antibiotics. Last time I had it my GP prescribed them very quickly and I was able to collect in a few hours without an appointment. Just dropped off a urine sample to be tested.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 18/02/2024 11:04

Worth trying cranberry juice until you can get to a GP?

EighteenBaldingStars · 18/02/2024 11:06

Could be a UTI! I'd try a pharmacist as I believe they are able to prescribe antibiotics for UTIs now (but double check before leaving the house)!

Really! It’s got to be 30 years since I had antibiotics for anything.
I’ll try and flush it out for a few days, see how I go on.
What causes it though? I’ve never had it before.

Get yourself to the Gp asap (assuming you still have symptoms) but in the meantime find some Cystitis Relief sachets - you can find them in most supermarkets nowadays - and see if they help.

I used to get cystitis now and then and always found them brilliant if started asap. The only time I needed the GP and ABs was when it hit me on holiday in Cyprus, and they just weren’t available to buy.
I don’t go anywhere without a supply now.

StmMary · 18/02/2024 11:07

You might have a urine infection.
Sometimes when we are older we get vaginitis.
Thin skin down below.. Making it like you've got.
Or you starting with intertistal cystitis.
Get a urine tests and see what it says. If it's clear ask Dr for help with estriol cream for vagina..
If it keeps happening see urologist at hospital..
Good luck honey.. Nothing worse what your going though..

jennylamb1 · 18/02/2024 11:08

Are you getting blood in your urine.

Don't wait. Get it treated before it hits your kidneys, if you think it's bad now it's nothing on a kidney infection.

Ahwig · 18/02/2024 11:08

I think some chemists can now prescribe certain antibiotics for female uti's . I read about it and then noticed my local chemist had a sign up saying this. Might be worth checking it out although some won't be open as it's Sunday but in my experience starting them asap is crucial as you just feel worse the longer it goes on.

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 18/02/2024 11:08

But can the pharmacist actually test for a uti/cystitis? I don’t want antibiotics on a guess. Surely no one will just prescribe such powerful drugs without confirmation??

Oh you poor thing if it's cystitis. It's so horrid.

Yes. If you take a sample they can dip it for you.

They’re antibiotics not Morphine.

W0tnow · 18/02/2024 11:10

If it’s got to this level, you will need antibiotics in my experience. You can ‘flush it out’ only in the super early stages, generally. In the meantime, go to pharmacy and get some ural, it’s a powder that you drink, it helps a little.

EighteenBaldingStars · 18/02/2024 11:10

I'd get antibiotics - left untreated you can get kidney damage which can be really serious

It is caused by bacteria getting into the urethra. Hurts like hell I used to get them quite a lot at uni as I was really run down living away from home for the first time and not looking after myself

Phone the pharmacist that's
Open today, ask if they dip urine. Filing that go to the walk in NHS centre
Don't leave it though, I had a kidney infection before ... now that REALLY hurts!

What happens when it hits the kidneys? I have a UTI now and have side/flank pain, which I presumed was kidney pain, but it's not that serious. I've got antibiotics now, but the doc said I have a resistant strain and it may not work...

jusdepamplemousse · 18/02/2024 11:11

Chemist will be able to test your urine.

If it gets to your kidneys the course of antibiotics you need will be no fun at all. Like ten days. But if you choose to nip in bud now you can with three days of slightly kinder ones.

stop drinking iced water. Lukewarm. And a hot water bottle.

bottomsup12 · 18/02/2024 11:11

Get some urine testing strips from Amazon.

If you have positive for leukocytes and protein int the urine then congratulations you have an UTI.

If not then you have cystitis which is the same symptoms but just inflammation of the bladder and urethra. Then you need to pay serious attention to your diet. More water for a start but also you may be developing an autoimmune reaction to something in your diet! Could be gluten for example. This causes your body to attack the mucous layer in your bladder meaning everything you eat stings the urinary tract lining

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 18/02/2024 11:11

stmMary that does make sense! Perimeno here, lots of changes going on, this is another I suspect.
Oh joy!!
Thanks so much x

It is cystitis. Testing is normally to see the specific bug I think. I never need antibiotics either. Ever. Except when I get cystitis.

Kidney infections can put you in hospital and make you very very unwell. If you've got flank pain call 111 now.

There's no evidence for cranberry. I agree with those suggesting the sachets in addition to getting antibiotics.

I feel OK, just a bit sore. I've already seen a doctor and am on antibiotics.
