What in hells teeth is this? Cystitis?

Never have I experienced this torture!

Bladder seemingly can’t hold any more than a thimble full of urine despite already drinking 3 pints of iced water this morning.
Have to get to the toilet immediately as the pain and pressure is awful and I can’t hold it.
When I do wee, I get strong awful spasms that make my eyes water.
urine is clear, no colour to it (due to the volume of water probably).

Ive had some paracetamol for the pain, can’t leave the house due to pain, urgency and frequency of needing the loo.

Any top tips for those experienced? How long will it last??

You can also buy / order antibiotics online via Boots, Superdrug and other pharmacies to collect or have delivered for UTIs.

Deadringer · 18/02/2024 12:02

I only had it once and holy crap! I needed two different antibiotics to clear it. It's the only time I have taken antibiotics as I am not keen on them but I was practically begging for them. I used cystopurin sachets for relief of symptoms which I found very good but needed the antibiotics to clear it. Good luck.

Utis can turn very nasty, very quickly without treatment - kidney infections, permanent damage and sepsis.

This. I had cystitis a few months ago, came from nowhere and urine was bright red. GP receptionist made me an appointment for the following morning with the paramedic. I am in the lucky position of having a GP as a family member so messaged them and was told to go to A&E as serious kidney damage could happen quickly. I thought that was an over reaction but went and was kept in hospital over night on a drip and given strong antibiotics. If I'd left it until the following morning I might not have had such a quick recovery.

No it bloody won't. No one ever wants to take responsibility for their own health. Give them a call, you might be surprised. I have called 111 in the morning with tonsillitis and by 11am, have had a script emailed to local pharmacy. It's not hard. Or if you ring your local emergency pharmacy, they may be able to prescribe you antibiotics. Why wait and suffer?! Just bloody call someone.

This. Until you call them, you won’t know how long it’ll take for a callback.

Also Lloyds pharmacists (and probably others) will prescribe antibiotics for a UTI if you fill out an online form, then you can pick them up at the nearest Lloyds. It’s more expensive than an NHS prescription, though - around £20 last time I needed it.

  1. don’t drink iced water, it makes it worse. Drink warm water or chamomile or lemongrass tea.
  2. Get cystitis powder sachets from supermarket and take every few hours.
  3. Get Dr. Mannose Waterfall products from Amazon or elsewhere on internet - they really seem to work. https://www.sweetcures.co.uk/products/waterfall-d-mannose-tablets-1000mg?gad_source=1
  4. Sorry you feel bad, but think yourself lucky you’ve not had this before - many women have it very often. Not necessarily any obvious cause. Wash hands etc. Toilet hygiene is important, always wipe from front to back. Sometimes sex practices can be a factor. General health/ rundownness etc. may affect.
  5. You can buy antibiotics over the internet via pharmacy med sites, thus avoiding GP. If you are over 60 you have to lie about your age as the algorithm refuses antibiotics for cystitis and says you must see a Dr. (because so many older women get frequent cystitis, I guess, and need checking out?)
  6. Good Luck

But can the pharmacist actually test for a uti/cystitis? I don’t want antibiotics on a guess. Surely no one will just prescribe such powerful drugs without confirmation??

Pharmacists will prescribe antibiotics now for UTI, personally what you're describing sounds awful and I'd have no reservations taken them. Why wouldn't you?

CherryRipe1 · 18/02/2024 13:04

It does sound like a UTI. If the home remedies don't work soon get to a pharmacy with a fresh pot of pee in an ultra clean pot for a dip test. Until then drink lots of lukewarm water with some bicarb. Normally a UTI is e-coli bacteria from poop. The little bastards have evolved to sink in their hooks to the bladder when a urine flow is detected. If you can, stop-starting your urine flow fools them and you'll pee more out. I had a UTI from hell, peeing razor blade frog spawn & copious water, bicarb and flow control got rid thankfully.

@FancyJapflack thanks, having a scan in a couple of weeks to check kidney/urinary tract/bladder.

Worth trying cranberry juice until you can get to a GP?

Latest research is casting a lot of doubt on cranberry juice…just saying…

Do not wait. I've ended up in hospital with what started as a uti that spread to my kidneys. Never felt so awful. Time is of the essence.

Appleofmyeye2023 · 18/02/2024 13:41

How old are you OP?

I never suffered much with UTI/cysitis until reaching peri menopause and then took 8 years of hospital appointments to get relief

i eventually was given diagnosis of intersatial cystitis and prescribed long term. Low dose antibiotics. Every time I tried to stop antibiotics the attacks came on agian. Sometimes multiple times per week. I once had a male consultant look embarrassed when I said that the spasms I got almost felt like the worse most intense clitoral organism- he had not the foggiest notion what I was talking about, but the agony was unbearable . I Took them for 5 years until a new GP questioned it.

she suggested (this was very recently) going onto HRT oestrogen only vaginally. Take it for 2 months then stop the antibiotics. She asked why I hadn’t taken HRT years ago, especially when I told her all my other horrendous menopausal symptoms . I said back 15-17 years ago GPs were not happy to do HRT and I’d not exaclty been encouraged. She was able to give me reassurance that even at 62 I may see some benefits and had little to loose so to speak to give it a whirl. I’ve been on the HRT cream and off antibiotics for 7 months and no attacks. Touchwood.

so, if perimenopausal, may be worth looking at HRT options- go to Gp. My experience of urologists were that they were dismissive, unhelpful, sometimes rude, and were far too happy to put it down to older women stuff you have to put up with. BUT, you do also need to be checked out to ensure something not more serious so sadly can’t avoid urologists completely

obviously if not perimenopausal, go to GP. And don’t let them fob you off with crap about making sure you’re wiping properly (women are simple or 3 years old in needing to be told how to clean themselves- why do doctors do this) or about emptying bladder after sex. Push and be a difficult women if needed. No one should have to put up with pain like it on a regular basis.

Appleofmyeye2023 · 18/02/2024 13:52

Op, also get some co-codomol. Paracetamol won’t touch it. You may also want to try BUSCAPAN. You can get that over the counter and helps a little (emphasis on little) with spasms as is an antispasmodic med.

but, antibiotics aren’t a “powerful medication” as such. Yep, for some people how are allergic they can be very dangerous (and that’s rare and usually limited to Penicillin where other antibiotics can be used anyway) but they really aren’t powerful in sense that they have side effects affecting most people. Paracetamol is actually way more of a riskier medication - doesn’t take much to cause irreversible liver damage. The issue with prescribing antibiotics is overprescribing. Bacteria can become immune. And then when Bactria transmitted the immunity is transmitted. One way to ensure that doesn’t happen is always finish your course. The other way is to avoid prescribing unless you (the Gp or pharmacists) know for sure the infection is bacterial and not viral or fungal. Antibiotics only work on bacteria. Generally they are more anti prescribing for things like coughs, earache than for UTIs which generally tend to be more likely bacterial vs viral.

do not hesitate to take antibiotics for this if GP/pharmacist prescribe. You could cause worse damage that can’t be fixed. UTI can be dangerous if not treated.

Go to get help.

and try other meds I suggested- cocodomal and buscapan.

Weeing in the bath can help. I know it sounds grim but I’ve had times that it’s the only thing that eased things. One time I was weeing almost pure blood. It was like a horror film.

Dipsticking urine isn’t an exact science either. There can be protein and traces of blood for other reasons, and some cystitis will produce a clear sample.

This. I suffered for years and it never showed up on urine test…

They used to call it honeymoon cystitis for obvious reasons

What a shitty comment.

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 18/02/2024 20:40

VanillaImpulse. Many thanks for the fact sheet, really helpful and reassuring as I don’t have any of the serious signs and symptoms.
Im confident to carry on with my simple home remedies, paracetamol, buscopan and fluids, fluids fluids.
Symptoms are a bit better tonight for sure.

Did you try the sachets?

I found they masked the symptoms, came back with a vengeance

Got a prescription from boots same day

Glad you are feeling a bit better!

I had this same thing start on Wednesday afternoon,m by Thursday morning I was in agony, hot / cold / feverish. Strong urge to wee but nothing would come. If I did wee, it was so painful.
I went to Boots, had a consultation with the pharmacist and was prescribed antibiotics, 2 a day forr 3 days, also advised to drink at least 2 litres of water per day.
Now, Sunday, it seems to be all gone, the antibiotics started to help within 12 hours.

I've done that on line with Boots too, just emailed symptoms and the prescribed antibiotics and I picked them up from the store.

Hi, just checking in, how are you now? I’ve just posted something similar. I’m at my wits end

IssyC · 17/09/2024 13:42

Hi, please listen to this brilliant award winning new podcast on chronic urinary tract infections (CUTIs), highly recommend if you're wanting to learn more about the little know topic of CUTIs. Its brilliantly researched and a really important topic everyone should be aware of that aims to help women advocate for themselves in the face of stubborn GPs and a medical world that has historically ignored womens health.
