What was your favourite soft drink when you were growing up?

We used to buy bottles of pop from the greengrocers, almost always Barr, which meant Tizer, Jusoda, Strike Cola and Dandelion and Burdock. I think Jusoda was my favourite, a sort of fizzy orange-flavoured drink although I have no idea what was actually in it! I remember thinking Strike Cola was every bit as good as Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

Citra, from Wakefield, made lots of fizzies too. Apple Dash was the best one. I probably considered it a bit grown-up as it was apparently made from the same fruit used to make cider!

I never cared for cherryade and cream soda. I wasn't crazy about Dandelion and Burdock either but I made do with it. I doubt I could stomach any of these drinks now; I'd be overwhelmed by the sweetness.

We used to have Lowcock’s fizzy drinks. I used to stay at my nana’s every Friday with my cousin. Our aunty (who still lived at home) would take us to the park then on the way back we’d get pop, sweets and crisps from the corner shop. The pop would usually be either D&B, cherryade, cream soda or cola. We’d have a feast watching Dynasty and whatever was on before it.

Then the day after, after Going Live, we’d take the bottle back and get some sweets between us with the 10p they gave you for it.

Marston’s Sass. Sarsaparilla flavoured fizzy. It was popular in the North West and has a similar flavour to Coke but nicer. Apparently it was also popular in the East End of London. Dandelion and burdock was the Yorkshire version.
Sarsaparilla was made popular by the Temperence movement and was sold as a health drink in the 19th/20th century.

@Tequilamockinbird I loved sarsaparilla. You can get a nice cordial (Mrs Fitzpatricks) of it to make up with fizzy water. They do a good Dandelion and Burdock too - & a Cream Soda etc.

At my secondary school we could buy bottles of pop to have with our luncheon. It wasn't top brand stuff but usually labelled Trendy Pops, Batley's or Hey. On reflection I guess it all came from Hey and Humphries whose factory and bottling plant were somewhere in West Yorkshire. It was quite good, as I recall, especially the dry ginger ale. Frightfully sophisticated!

I like orange soda (one for those of a certain age)
Otherwise liked pineappleade but never seen that outside the alpine van (again those of a certain age)

Floralnomad · 18/02/2024 00:44

Up until I was about 18 my Nan and grandad had a pub so we drank a fair bit of coke . Nowadays I like Pepsi max , Diet Coke or cream soda .

MelSilver · 18/02/2024 02:20

Bright green tropical Quosh. Full
Of additives but it was lush. 💚💚💚

TheTecknician · 18/02/2024 08:20

@MelSilver I remember Quosh. I think it was made by Beecham. The orange and pineapple cordial was best, followed by orange and grapefruit. There was a bright red strawberry flavour too.

Cherryade or dandelion and burdock

There was also a green fizzy drink in a small glass bottle called Space Special that I loved. I used to be allowed it on a Friday morning when I went to the market with my grandma and we stopped at a cafe.

TheTecknician · 22/02/2024 10:39

I should have mentioned Kia-Ora orange squash. Far nicer than Robinson's or supermarket own brand but I'd probably find it overly sweet now. I like Rose's Lime Juice cordial in the summer.
