What was your favourite soft drink when you were growing up?

We used to buy bottles of pop from the greengrocers, almost always Barr, which meant Tizer, Jusoda, Strike Cola and Dandelion and Burdock. I think Jusoda was my favourite, a sort of fizzy orange-flavoured drink although I have no idea what was actually in it! I remember thinking Strike Cola was every bit as good as Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

Citra, from Wakefield, made lots of fizzies too. Apple Dash was the best one. I probably considered it a bit grown-up as it was apparently made from the same fruit used to make cider!

I never cared for cherryade and cream soda. I wasn't crazy about Dandelion and Burdock either but I made do with it. I doubt I could stomach any of these drinks now; I'd be overwhelmed by the sweetness.

Strawberry flavour?

BouleDeSuif · 17/02/2024 12:47

Dandelion and Burdock and Lilt. Still like Dandelion and Burdock with fish and chips.

MissDollyMix · 17/02/2024 12:48

Any of these drinks - they all tasted better before they pumped them full of artificial sweeteners.
my favourite as a child was original recipe Ribena - full sugar, no sweetener. You can’t get it anymore 😔

The 1970's, so all sorts of weird and wonderful things....

Panda Pops
Cresta (a frothy/fizzy drink advertised by a Polar Bear!)
Kia-ora in square cartons at the cinema. Had a paper-covered straw to push through a raised plastic circle in the centre. Sold from trays by the ushers/usherettes during the interval.
Um Bongo
Frozen and powdered orange juice (Rise and Shine?)
Cans of very weak/non alcoholic shandy sold to children!
Jamaican Ginger Ale
Tab Cola
Golden Lemonade from off-licences (swear this is now Hogwarts Butterbeer!)
Lucozade in the special dimpled bottles (only when officially ill!)
Ribena with the gold foil cap.
Bottles of limeade, cherryade, coke, lemonade ordered from the milkman at Christmas.
Humphrey Milkshake Straws - again from the milkman
Lemonade or Coke float at the Wimpy.

We never got fizzy juice at home because it was too expensive (1970s, 5 dc, 1 working adult) so we had cheap squash only! As a treat we sometimes got an orange drink (can't remember its name) it was thick, syrupy and bright orange, diluted to taste and tasted like plastic fresh orange.

My gran, who we thought was rich, had a cupboard with a stack of crates from the Alpine man, of every flavour available. Cream Soda and Limeade were always the first to be drank and pineappleade (poor mans lilt!), orangeade were always last.

We never had brands like Coke, Pepsi, Lilt, Tango etc until we had our own money. I have never tasted Tizer, Vimto or Dr Pepper!

Ooh and Slush Puppies....blue and red. Such a big thing when they came in!!

notprincehamlet · 17/02/2024 12:53

Dandelion and burdock from the Alpine pop truck

I grew up in the North East of Scotland and we had a local lemonade factory. My dad used to bring home a crate of different bottles - Scotch cola, pineappleade, limeade etc but my favourite was Moray Cup which was a red fruity one.

I still mourn its passing 50 years on.

Coca Cola

Still is although I normally drink Coke Zero nowadays.

MorrisZapp · 17/02/2024 13:02

Hay's Scotch Cola. It had a tartan label and visibly popping fizz. Absolutely amazing.

Bon Accord lemonade. #aberdeen #spikthedoric

DinosaurOfFire · 17/02/2024 13:04

Dandelion and Burdock, cream soda and ginger beer. I was heavily influenced by Enid Blyton stories!

Tequilamockinbird · 17/02/2024 13:06

I used to love sasparilla (sp?) from the pop truck. Have looked for it a few times over the past few years, for nostalgia purposes, but can't find it Sad

Liked my weekly treat of a can of coke on Fridays when mam did her grocery shop (late 60s child here)
I'm Irish and we had a local fizzy drink company called Shannon Minerals. Every Christmas dad would buy two boxes of mixed flavours (each box had 6 bottles)
There was orange, red and white lemonade, American Cream soda, raspberry, soda and lime.
My fave was the orange, it nuclear orange colour and so sharp!

Giggorata · 17/02/2024 13:16

In deepest Kent, in the sixties, there was a very local soft drinks firm called Bing.
Brilliant name for fizzy drinks!
It came in a few flavours, but the unique and best was “red Bing”.
it wasn’t red, it was actually the colour of Tizer, but immeasurably superior.
Bing got taken over by another firm, all of twenty miles away.
We managed to get hold of some on a visit in the eighties.

Bbq1 · 17/02/2024 13:16

Used to love the van coming round with the Barr drinks. We always had to return the empties. We loved D&B, fizzy Orange and Cream Soda - especially a Cream soda float! I recently bought a can of D&B for old times sake and I couldn't drink it. Sadly, I didn't like it. Must be a kids drink!
