7 years in prison for taking 3 year old for female genital mutilation abroad

The child reported her 13 years later when she was 16. Lets hope more girls come forward now, and more colluders are sent to prison. Anybody who has ever been involved in any action supporting FGM needs to be quaking in their boots - it does not matter how long ago, they can be charged and convicted decades later and sent to prison.

FGM: Woman jailed for taking child to Kenya for mutilation

Amina Noor is the first person to be convicted of assisting a non-UK person to perform FGM.

Good! Bastard.

Throw away the key.

Dotdashdottinghell · 16/02/2024 21:41

About time someone got sent to jail for this. Hopefully the message will start to get through.

Throw away the key.

Agreed

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 16/02/2024 21:42

Awful. Presumably the mother was mutilated herself. What a terrible culture. Awful for a DD too though, knowing that if they report their parents then they're likely to go to jail. A child would likely feel guilty for that. The only solution is to stop FGM before it happens - a combination of education and fear of punishment.

EmpressSoleil · 16/02/2024 21:43

The child who reported her is a very brave young lady and I hope she has had all the support she needs and deserves. This barbaric practice needs to come to an end. A prison sentence is rightly deserved and will hopefully send a strong message.

clpsmum · 16/02/2024 21:43

Not long enough

newnamethanks · 16/02/2024 21:47

Good news. Absolutely barbaric practice. Hope more follow.

I agree completely, though while the victim's anonymous to us her community will certainly know who she is - so best hope she can be kept safe

Not long enough

But at least she has been jailed, which frankly surprised me

Thisisnotmyid · 16/02/2024 21:48

I really hope this opens the doors for more victims to come forward and report this. It’s utterly horrific and should come with a standard jail sentence.

PerkingFaintly · 16/02/2024 21:49

Quite right too.

Very glad to see a successful prosecution. That poor girl.

And come to that, the woman who was convicted had been mutilated herself. So she was a victim as well as a perpetrator.

It's right she was prosecuted, victim herself or no. Essential to break the cycle.

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 16/02/2024 21:58

Figures held by the United Nations suggest that 94% of females of Somali origin living in Kenya undergo FGM.

To date, the only other successful prosecution for FGM was in 2019 when an Ugandan woman from Walthamstow, east London, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for mutilating a three-year-old girl.

Such a long way to go but hopefully it's a start as it's getting wider publicity.

Horrific - I have never understood why women who have been mutilated would ever want to see this done to those they love in turn. It's sick.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 16/02/2024 22:02

Absolute scum.

hattie43 · 16/02/2024 22:02

Sentence should have been far longer .

Soubriquet · 16/02/2024 22:04

Needs a harsh punishment to deter other women from doing it. It’s a sick sick practice and I know a lot of it is stigma. They truly believe their daughters won’t be marriageable unless they are cut. I hope it’s taught in schools at a young age to try and teach the young girls, who might have already suffered to protect their future children

RosesAndHellebores · 16/02/2024 22:07

Not before time but what I wonder should happen to all those in authority who have overlooked it time and time again. They equally guilt albeit vicariously.

Fetaa · 16/02/2024 22:09

Should have been a longer sentence

Mischance · 16/02/2024 22:13

Well hooray - about time too. The sentence should have been longer though.

Alicewinn · 16/02/2024 22:16

Okay, so the woman did the deed, but aren’t the men driving the demand? Doesn’t feel like this is the root of the problem but maybe I’m being ignorant

Moier · 16/02/2024 22:18

I remember reading an article about Supermodel Waris Dirie ..she was just five when she became a victim of female genital mutilation.

She's a campaigner..
It's barbaric..
Cannot believe mothers and Grandmother's still do this.

vipersnest1 · 16/02/2024 22:23

This poor girl will be around 20 now. I can't help but think of my own DCs and the effect on them that such a barbaric act would have.
The sentence isn't long enough, especially given that the victim is subject to this for her lifetime.

caringcarer · 16/02/2024 22:27

Sadly it's the females who seem so set on mutilating their DD's. 7 years is not enough from destroying the sex life of the victim. I would think it will be hard for a mutilated person to have a decent sex life afterwards. Girls from Somali backgrounds should be checked at 3, 7, 11, 15 and if they appear cut prosecutions on family members follow. If Somali women, living in the UK, knew this would always happen they would be less likely to enable the cutting. I know it wouldn't be pleasant but a 1 minute check by a medical professional every 4 years to keep them safe it would be worth it.

Kendodd · 16/02/2024 22:36

About time someone finally went to prison for this.

I'm white British, but would be willing for my daughters to undergo these checks (although up to them when older) if it helped keep at risk girls safer. Dreadful practice.

Danikm151 · 16/02/2024 22:50

A horrible thought around this is that the victims at the time generally won’t be old enough to report or know what is happening to them so the crimes go on for much longer.

if you’re told by your mother this is what you have to do you will believe them so the cycle will continue.

more education and prosecution are needed.
