7 years in prison for taking 3 year old for female genital mutilation abroad

The child reported her 13 years later when she was 16. Lets hope more girls come forward now, and more colluders are sent to prison. Anybody who has ever been involved in any action supporting FGM needs to be quaking in their boots - it does not matter how long ago, they can be charged and convicted decades later and sent to prison.

FGM: Woman jailed for taking child to Kenya for mutilation

Amina Noor is the first person to be convicted of assisting a non-UK person to perform FGM.

I remember reading an article about Supermodel Waris Dirie ..she was just five when she became a victim of female genital mutilation.

She's a campaigner..
It's barbaric..
Cannot believe mothers and Grandmother's still do this.

I have read her autobiography. It's shocking.

Also Hibo Wadare, who now runs a charity that goes into schools talking about FGM.

Her book "Cut" is so very sad.

Sasqwatch · 16/02/2024 23:47

Not long enough, she should have got a Life Sentence.

I'm white British, but would be willing for my daughters to undergo these checks (although up to them when older) if it helped keep at risk girls safer. Dreadful practice.

Yes, me too. It would take about 1 minute.

MuddledMadge · 17/02/2024 21:59

Hopefully this will make more victims of this practice come forward.

Well since 1985 when FGM was made illegal this is only the second prosecution, so I honestly wouldn't hold your breath Sad

Bring back hanging.

Hibo is brilliant.

Very glad someone finally got a jail sentence for this. Should have happened sooner.

I couldn’t actually read the article…absolutely shocking with the knowledge I have about this procedure!

Okay, so the woman did the deed, but aren’t the men driving the demand? Doesn’t feel like this is the root of the problem but maybe I’m being ignorant”

No, sorry, that doesn’t wash. As an abused child, the last thing I would do is abuse a child.

MuddledMadge · 18/02/2024 13:14

It's appalling that so few people have been convicted of this since 1985.
