What’s the biggest waste of money you have ever seen?

Last summer I was in a newsagent and the woman in front of me bought 11 of those rubishy childrens magazines, she was having a party and wanted them to keep the children busy.

It was €55.

I’m sure there is a lot worse things that people have wasted money on, (and I can’t believe I am still thinking about It) but even one of them magazines is a total waste of money.

Sadiq Khans new overground name change - costing 6M!!!!!!!!!!!

As a minority myself, this is the biggest and most wasteful act of virtue signalling I’ve ever seen. No one cares about giving these lines a new name. Fix the bloody nhs.

The UK’s in a recession now apparently and the NHS is struggling…this is what they spend the money on?

Also the amount of money lost with the PPE debacle.

it’s crazy how politicians get away with such things?!

Cloth masks during covid.

Far better for the environment than disposable ones!

Pick and mix sweets, kids hadn’t even filled the bags that much and it came to around £20! Never again will let them get puck and mix sweets.

Leeds City Council city centre roadworks scheme. Topped off by a major bridge they closed for two years, reopened for a year and now just closed again just to fit a few bolts they could’ve fitted two years ago.

100% agree with you! I honestly think LCC must be on another planet when making decisions 😲👽

Biggest waste ive seen was myself i got 2 new sofas cheap £160 for both from a closing down sale.
I was looking to get a new sofa for weeks.
Loved the look of them gray leather very pleased with myself what a bargin.
I hated them as soon as they arrived.
Got them indoors and omg they just looked awful. What was i thinking.
Had them for 3 months and hated them so gave them to a charity shop.
Got myself a nice recliner off amazon much better.
I dont know what i was thinking that day.

My office went through a really expensive refurbishment for the whole building. It went on for months and was all done with corporate colours and in a certain style. It was just finished, when a takeover announcement was made and the building would have new owners with different corporate colours and style/ requirements . Total waste of time, effort and money.

In my first flat I decided to install a black hand basin in the bathroom. It looked amazing in the photos, all sleek and fancy looking. First time I brushed my teeth and got white toothpaste all over it I realised I'd made a monumental mistake.

Surprising that from amazon.

Usually buying furniture you need to view it in person before purchasing, this obviously was not the case.

The messenger statue in Plymouth cost millions of taxpayers money. It's such a monstrosity.

albaalba351 · 15/02/2024 14:25

To anyone saying the Royals - the Royals are actually one of the best ROI's (Return on Investments) that the country has. This stat shows that "While the average annual cost for UK taxpayers in royal upkeep comes to around £500m a year, Brand Finance estimates the monarchy’s brand contributes £2.5bn to the British economy in the same timeframe." https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/royal-family/royal-family-cost-money-tourism-b2333999.html#

buying clothes and shoes online which I then don’t return (if I don’t like) so then I’m stuck with them, I would say I have wasted around 1000k in the last few years…..terrible habit

,

I hope that £1000K is an exaggeration? A million quid is quite a lot to spend on unworn clothes.

On a grand scale, the things already mentioned, brexit, HS2, the royal family, Covid ppe contracts.

On a day to day scale, I was in the supermarket one evening and stood behind and older man at the checkout who had picked up 7 hugely reduced large beef joints. The cashier commented that they were a really good price and replied that he probably wouldn't use them all as he was a single man and only had a small fridge with a box freezer in the top but they were such a good price he couldn't leave them on the shelf so took them all Confused The cashier looked shocked and said that she hoped they didn't go to waste and he said he'd eat what he could before they went off but that some of them might well end up in the bin Angry I really wish now I'd spoken up and asked if I could have one to for my family. I get they were stupidly cheap but what a waste of money (and food) to buy joints of meat you know you'll throw away!

I used to work in the community and had a client like this.
You couldnt see the kitchen work surfaces for the ammount of food.
Think 10+ loaves of bread on the counter and a bin bag full of unopened but no good bread. Same for cakes, cereals, fruit and veg. There were at least 5 bin bags going at any given time. And that was just in the kitchen.
In the garage he had 3 fridges absolutely heaving with fresh food that never got ate then thrown in the bin bags ready for his daughter to take on her fortnightly trip to the tip.

In the end I had to ask for him to be taken off me because it made me feel sick.

Wexone · 15/02/2024 14:44

@Lengokengo that was some waste -i actually cant believe it, someone on the finance side knew that the take was happening and still apprpved the budget for the redesign . Takeovers don't happen overnight

They do seem determined to stop anyone wanting to ever visit the City again to shop

I used to go regularly but closing off the square just makes it an awful journey and public transport only works if you live near it and you dont want to actually buy anything when you are shopping.

No, the NHS also spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on Inclusivity Consultants (an old school friend is one and laughing all the way to the bank), Rainbow literature and lanyards. Oh and don't forget the lovely Rainbow zebra crossing at Leicester Royal Infirmary circa. £40,000.

We did that with a few olives on a fancy market stall, £10 for the tub!!

It's madness but there we are with our expensive sweets and olives the stall holders definitely see us coming!
