What’s the biggest waste of money you have ever seen?

Last summer I was in a newsagent and the woman in front of me bought 11 of those rubishy childrens magazines, she was having a party and wanted them to keep the children busy.

It was €55.

I’m sure there is a lot worse things that people have wasted money on, (and I can’t believe I am still thinking about It) but even one of them magazines is a total waste of money.

Our local council spent a whopping £300,000 on refurbishing our local tiny village library - not rebuilding it, but installing mood lighting, automatic doors, a new staff kitchen and toilet, brand new shelving units, new carpets, new desks/counters, new computers, scanner, copier and printers, etc. It was the talk of the village how much they spent on so little!

Within a year they closed it down and stripped the building - most stuff went into some huge skips they had by a gang of workmen who just ripped stuff apart. No sign of anything being saved for sale or reuse. Within a day it was just an empty shell.

I was going to say this is insane (and such a shame!), and it still is. But it's reminded me that a council near me spent 500k renevating a local park and 2 years later are planning to rip it all out to make it a campsite for the travelling community. Why?! 🤦🏼‍♀️

My sil buying 12 new single duvets from Argos for her dd’s sleepover. It was years ago but it sometimes comes into my head. I thought it was absolute madness.

WhereHaveMyMarblesGone · 15/02/2024 09:26

Anything the council does.
Potholes aplenty, but they can find the money for some ridiculous artwork or something.

Local council staff/civil service working from home and having their utility bills paid by the tax payers.
Get back f*cking work like the rest of us have to

Another CS here - please can you tell me how i can get my utility bills paid? I'm in the office at least 60% of the time so maybe i don't qualify? Come and join the CS if you think it's such a cushy job - god knows we are so short staffed we could do with an extra pair of hands

Cosmetic surgery on the nhs
Any money put towards “gender affirming care”. Get them a therapist not a mutilater surgeon

Pozz · 15/02/2024 09:32

I work for my local council and I certainly don’t get my utility bills paid when I work from home

Same.

Personalised number plates

I mean seriously, what's the point???

whataretherulesss · 15/02/2024 09:35

My council's new rubbish/recycling scheme. The only changes to the current service is that you're getting a caddy for food waste (which used to go in the general waste bin, so fair enough) and you can only put out one bin full of general waste and it must be in a green wheelie bin. Fine.

We are all about to be given a new wheelie bin (lots of people will already have one), new glass, cardboard, plastic, metal and paper recycling bags (what's wrong with the bags we've got for these already?) and the food waste caddy.

No one should need the new bags, we've already got them. If the giving out of new bags is meant to incentivise those not already recycling these things to recycle more, a) it probably won't make any difference as they obviously aren't fussed, and b) won't the fact that they can only put out one wheelie bin full of general waste mean they are forced to recycle more to save room in the bin for non-recyclables?

If you need a wheelie bin, there should be a system to request one and it'll be delivered. I imagine that would save the cost to several thousand wheelie bins that aren't needed.

Absolute waste of tax payers cash. The roads round here are full of potholes. Use the money to fix them instead.

Disagree with those saying Millennium Dome (now O2) it has pretty much revitalised what was a very economically depressed part of Greenwich. Went to the O2 for a gig a few weeks back and the whole place was buzzing. It's had a good legacy.

Qwerty21 · 15/02/2024 09:22

How much did he cost? Do you still have the receipt? Maybe you can return him

I'm too frightened to tot it up 🤣

48Times11 · 15/02/2024 09:44

@whataretherulesss has reminded me. Our council changed their rubbish bin company last year. The wheelie bins had the provider molded into the bin itself. So they sent out stickers with the new provider's name that we have to put over the name. I've just googled how many households that is - 72,800. So three stickers per household (2 wheelie bins and a caddy). At least it is less of a waste than new wheelie bins for everyone but it still is a pretty major amount of money. And we are in one of the most economically deprived parts of the UK. (With also loads of potholes).

Rishi Sunaks salary.

The man does nothing but cause more problems.

Needmorelego · 15/02/2024 09:48

@fightingthedogforadonut actually yes about the Greenwich area by the dome. The peninsula shopping centre (down past the IKEA) is massive and always busy.
I have an old map of the area from the 70s. It was literally an empty wasteland with some gas works.
They've added the cable car and built a whole new residential area (obviously started for the Olympics originally but wasn't the dome used as part of the Olympics?).
It's a thriving part of London now.

Magazines will have colouring inside and games.

LamonicBibber1 · 15/02/2024 09:55

Agree with loads of these (may as well shorten it to "the government" as the top money wasting source, just everything they have a hand in)

BUT I'm most intrigued by @WinterLobelia and the pewter/rubber necklace?!? How? Why? Can you share a link? It sounds awful, how on earth could it cost so much 😂

meisafairy · 15/02/2024 09:57

The amount people spend on Christmas, many go into debt just to lavish unaffordable gifts.

We really need a campaign of getting the true meaning of Christmas back.

People need to realise it’s not shameful or sad not to have a pile of presents or hundreds spent on food and drink.

Why are personalised number plates a waste of money? I mean, I don't like them and wouldn't have one, but if you have an interesting one they can be excellent investments.

Electric cars?

my friend thinks not buying an electric car is a waste of money, he says it never needs to be serviced.

Leeds City Council city centre roadworks scheme. Topped off by a major bridge they closed for two years, reopened for a year and now just closed again just to fit a few bolts they could’ve fitted two years ago.

Whaaaaat! I’m a big fan of the proposals and changes to the roads in Leeds.

They do, they just don't need oil changes.

SinnerBoy · 15/02/2024 10:27

Well, I think that most of the Government pisses up the wall have been mentioned, so I have nothing to add there!

2112 / 2013 - I was in Morrison's at the ciggie counter and a pensioner in front of me bought 400 Richmond and 50 lottery tickets. They were still £1.00 at the time.

She remarked to the assistant, "Ee, yer pension gans neewhere these days, eh?"
