What’s the biggest waste of money you have ever seen?

Last summer I was in a newsagent and the woman in front of me bought 11 of those rubishy childrens magazines, she was having a party and wanted them to keep the children busy.

It was €55.

I’m sure there is a lot worse things that people have wasted money on, (and I can’t believe I am still thinking about It) but even one of them magazines is a total waste of money.

I knew someone who bought a £750,000 dining table. Absolutely blew my mind.

@GinForBreakfast the Millennium Dome is currently a massive event arena plus has loads of restaurants and shops and always seems busy.
For something built almost 25 years ago and still being used I would say it's probably covered it's original costs.

agree!

That's not just a waste of money, it's also immoral!

Absolutely - the scandal of the immorality and wastefulness and lies of this Conservative government will haunt us for decades; we'll be paying for the dumping of funds into millionaires' bank accounts for generations.

Whaaaaat! I’m a big fan of the proposals and changes to the roads in Leeds.

I hope you never want to drop off at Leeds station then. Instead of six ways to get there there is now one lane in and out

or the LGI in an emergency from the south, good luck with that

in fact the only people who can now reach their destination are our blessed local councillors who can drop down from leafy north Leeds to the civic hall and park in their own car park, no bother

I drop off at Leeds station regularly, and I work on the south side of the city centre so my commute is now so much easier with much less traffic.

I would hope ambulances can use the bus lanes, but tbh I haven’t really driven to that part of town in a while.

But if you drop off at the station around Neville Street/Sovereign Street, it’s a small walk into the station but easier (for me) than getting to the short stay car park.

But when it’s all done, it will be a much better city for pedestrians and for coming in via the train station. I think the idea will be you should park and ride if you want to drive (like in York). But I’m a fan, even as someone who regularly drives into Leeds!

We will have to agree to disagree I’m afraid. I could continue my views on the park and ride buses which are stuck in all the traffic and have ridiculous running hours…..

The US Presidential election. Guess why only billionaires can afford to run.

Millennium Dome. Cost £800m. I still cannot for the love of God work out where that money went.
And it wasn't intended to be a permanent structure?

You do realise it is now the O2 and has the biggest artists and performances in the country day in, day out and has totally regenerated the area around it with infrastructure and jobs?

DRS1970 · 15/02/2024 11:13

Scratch card always amaze me. Saw a woman in the shop queue the other day buy £20 worth; scratch them all off immediately; claim a £5 prize she had won; then used that money to buy more scratch cards; scratched those all off immediately; won nothing, and left empty handed. What a way to piss £25 up the wall.

pontipinemum · 15/02/2024 11:16

The children's hospital Dublin, originally the budget was about €650 million, it is now estimated it will cost €2 billion to complete!!!! Thats crazy, yes cost of materials etc went up a lot but that is unreal. If you built your own home and costs increased that much you'd have a lot to say.

When I was just gone 18 so 15 years ago. I ordered 2 shots in a very swanky London club, cost me nearly £40 I nearly cried! Guys had been buying us drinks all night and I felt bad, I didn't after that. If they did what they said they did, they had the money!

Cloth masks during covid.

😂😂 I know!!!
I love how we were forced to wear them and they didn't do jack all.

Local council staff/civil service working from home and having their utility bills paid by the tax payers.
Get back f*cking work like the rest of us have to

I don't think this is generally true though, they aren't paid utilities. If you can find a local authority or civil service department that does, they are the exception not the rule.

Don't make stuff up out of jealousy for WFH.

Whatever crap the Council spends money on

Our council spends nearly two thirds of its budget on social care. It’s a statutory service, so not much scope for saving money there.

SirenSays · 15/02/2024 11:50

My dear friend, while on benefits and pregnant with her 5th child, watched her parter win thousands gambling and then immediately lose a third of it on another bet.

QuestionableMouse · 15/02/2024 11:51

ThreeRingCircus · 15/02/2024 07:50

Haha I totally agree. I'm always bemused by people getting McDonald's as a takeaway to eat at home. It is SO expensive once you add delivery costs on and the price hike from Uber Eats/Deliveroo etc you may as well have a decent Chinese or Indian for the same money. I do get McDonald's if we're out and about sometimes but can't understand the appeal of cold fries at home.

I also agree with designer clothes for children that they'll grow out of or get filthy within five minutes.

I'll add those "scent boosters" for laundry. If you use decent washing detergent your laundry will smell clean anyway. Or use a capful of zoflora if you really want extra scent. The scent booster pearls just seem like a total waste of money.

I occasionally get McDonald's delivered because it's one of the only things I can get delivered due to a lack of gluten free options where I live! Burger, no bun and fries is a safer option than risking Chinese (the couple I tried didn't seem to understand what I was asking when I rang to check if they used gluten/wheat 😬) and my other option is stupidly expensive pizza.

stayathomer · 15/02/2024 11:53

Yes magazines for that cost seems crazy but actually for a treat I get the kids one every so often- they’ve become unaffordable regularly but I used to love them as a child and my kids properly sit down and do the puzzles and read them (and two of my kids aren’t readers so I see it as a huge plus!)

Leeds City Council city centre roadworks scheme

OMG, absolutely this. Can't be arsed to go into the city centre at all these days. Even taxis won't go there.
