How many countries have your teen dc visited?

I just posted on another thread saying we've travelled a fair bit and my dc19 said she's very grateful for this. I've just counted though and they've been to 8 non UK countries over 3 continents, which doesn't sound a lot. We've been to some countries twice, but different areas. I didn't include transit countries.
This is not a stealth boast BTW as we've always done it on the cheap, they've been taken out of school and our accommodation would leave most of MN pearl clutching!

Ds is 3 (so not a teen yet) and he's been to 4 so far (not including UK of course).
I'm hoping to add 2-3 more in the next 12-ish months but we save our money for travel and spend little on other things because travel is what I love.

Seven7seven · 14/02/2024 22:30

My dc have been to Vietnam twice, travelled the 2nd time to various places but we stayed with family both times. They haven't been anywhere else.

Ultravox · 14/02/2024 22:32

DS is 18. Never been out of Europe but been to France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Greece, Turkey.

JaninaDuszejko · 14/02/2024 22:49

When I was 18 my only trip to another country was going to England once as a teenager (I am Scottish), I had holidayed all over Scotland though. I spent my first student loan on an interrailing trip aged 19 and went to France, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, and The Netherlands. You can probably tell exactly how old I am thanks to that sentence!

DH was born abroad and has parents from different continents so has lived in countries in South America, Europe and Asia and travelled extensively as a child. His DM is in her 80s and is still jetting off all over the place, she's currently in Asia. I'm half in awe of her and half horrified at her carbon footprint.

When the DC were preschool age we only holidayed in Scotland but our eldest is 16 and they have been to Scotland, Wales and England in the UK and also France (by train), Italy, Spain and Denmark which is pretty good I think. They know they are lucky and that not everyone can go on holidays, we're on the mythical MN 6 figure household income and do a 1 week foreign holiday a year plus UK trips and it still feels like a lot of money.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 14/02/2024 22:51

I'd only been to Greece and a day trip to France by the time I was 18. I travelled extensively once I was able to.

DSS 16 has been to Spain multiple times (family). Also going to UAE soon as I work in the region. I don't think it's essential for kids to have overseas holidays tbh. It's a nightmare trying to coordinate everyone's interests and so bloody expensive.

We'll try and do something in the summer, not sure what though.

Both my DCs had been to three different continents before their first birthdays: born in Asia, visit to UK to be introduced to family, holiday to Australia.

I think DS had been to about 30 countries by the time he hit 20, and it's probably nearer 40 now, but these days he (and I) are much more conscious of carbon footprints, so although he still loves travelling, nearly everything is by train. He has made a point of ticking off all the mini-countries in Europe (Andorra, Vatican City etc).

inigomontoyahwillcox · 14/02/2024 23:44

Turkey
France
Spain
Portugal
Italy

Sodullincomparison · 15/02/2024 00:01

DD is only five not a teenager and has been to 10 countries. It would have been double if not for Covid.

by the time I was 18, I’d been on four school trips to France (2), Belgium and Spain.

Since then I’ve been to 65 and I want to share this with her.

We live abroad and dh and I are from different countries so both dcs have traveled a lot, often to visit family.

Dd1 is 18 and has been to 21 countries, she is also going to South Africa in March on a school trip and South Korea in June
Dd2 is 11 and has been to 18 countries.

Yes, they know they are very privileged, I didn't go overseas until I was 16.
