How many countries have your teen dc visited?

I just posted on another thread saying we've travelled a fair bit and my dc19 said she's very grateful for this. I've just counted though and they've been to 8 non UK countries over 3 continents, which doesn't sound a lot. We've been to some countries twice, but different areas. I didn't include transit countries.
This is not a stealth boast BTW as we've always done it on the cheap, they've been taken out of school and our accommodation would leave most of MN pearl clutching!

DC 17 has been to 26 other countries. Mostly all on the cheap via cheap skyscanner finds and mainly Europe but also to Africa, Canada, USA and Asia. It is a bit of a hobby and lots of places would not really he considered by lots of people. A few we have been back to several times.

Octavia64 · 14/02/2024 20:47

At 18 I had never left the country

Denmark
China - Shanghai and Hong Kong
British Virgin Islands
France
Germany
Austria

Italy
Turkey

I may have over compensated somewhat.

My 15 year old has been to 6 countries. Looking to make it 7 this summer but may end up going back to one we’ve been to.

Id love to add more. Want to do some city breaks but obviously it’s not all that affordable.

He is lucky though as I hadn’t gone anywhere by 15.

I thought ds was well travelled but obviously not! Think he’s only done 5 countries. Probably similar to what I’d done at that age but 5 more than dh who didn’t go abroad until he was 25

WhatHaveIFound · 14/02/2024 20:50

At 18 I'd been to just two countries abroad, one of which was by dad's birth country.

At the same age my DC had been to around 25 because DH and I love to travel and we decided that having kids wasn't going to hold us back.

LaChienneDesFromages · 14/02/2024 20:52

We live in England. Mine have been to:

France
Wales
The Netherlands
Belgium
Switzerland
Ireland
Slovenia
Slovakia
Austria
Greece
Germany
Finland
Estonia
Hungary
Spain
Italy
Bosnia
Croatia
Serbia
USA
Canada
Ireland, North and Republic
Australia
Hong Kong
Simgapore
Namibia
South Africa
Botswana
Israel

Lots of those places were family holidays, with a few visiting friends and relatives. DBILs live in the Balkans and US (previously Israel) so that’s decided a few of the more far flung adventures (Bosnia is amazing, by the way). My mum’s family is French so we go to France most often. My best friend is in Oz so we’ve been twice and loved it.

RamblingAroundTheInternet · 14/02/2024 20:52

By age 18, oldest DC had been to Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore twice (ages 3 and 4, met the Sultan and where she got her lifelong love of Asian food I’m sure!), the US 3 times including Florida, LA and Las Vegas, Canada twice including Toronto to Alberta road trips, and 10 European countries, a lot of which we stopped in/drove through on annual road trip holidays on at least 7 years until she was 18. She’s been to New York, Turkey and returned to the European countries as an adult.

Middle DCs did the same excepting the Asian countries and the US visits as too young.

Youngest didn’t do Canada either but did the 5 of the European road trips and has been to Turkey twice as well but he’s only 13.

MrsMitford3 · 14/02/2024 20:53

Just went up to DD room as she has one of those world maps you scratch as you have been somewhere-

She has been to 18. Some with us, a few with school.
(State school with good trips and she did World Challenge)

Some one offs, some multiple times.

Absolutely loves to travel-this was by the time she was around 20.

Secondstart1001 · 14/02/2024 20:54

My eldest who is 17 now have travelled to Cuba, India, United States (ny x2), France x 7 Norway x 3, Turkey, Lanzarote, Malta x 3, Menorca, Fuetraventura … her summer holidays got duplicated when I divorced her dad. She also went to China for 2 weeks with school as she was studying Mandarin. She’s going to Rome with my parents after she finishes her A Levels. I think she’s better travelled than me and she wants to travel to Brazil in gap year ( which is no way happening ! Im
too scared for her safety). I do tell her how fortunate she is and should be grateful she has opportunities to travel with school, the ex and both sets of grandparents. I do hope she continues to have the opportunities in life. I do love a holiday myself and there is so much out there to see! But not enough money!

thiswaytosaturn · 14/02/2024 20:54

I was 23 when I first went abroad properly

I had only been to one country by the time I was 16…. I’ve made travel a huge focus in our lives and my DC have been to loads of the world. It’s my favourite thing to see places with them, even if it’s a couple of nights city break, I’ve taken them probably minimum 5 places a year. Planning trips is our family hobby 🥰

madderthanahatter · 14/02/2024 21:02

Thanks for all of the replies, I love reading all of the countries.
@TheSmallAssassin we'd love to see more of UK, but it's so expensive! I'd especially love to tour around South of England and Scottish Highlands, but too dear to stay there 😔. To give context we've gone to Marrakesh for £30 each return and paid £30 per night accommodation. It's much cheaper for us to go abroad! In saying that though the early December £9.99 flights are a thing of the past now 😭

Mine are younger, but we aim for at least one country per year of age! So as long as I include Scotland and Wales as separate countries, mine have been to 2 more and 3 more than their ages, respectively, although we don't have any new countries planned this year.

owlsinthedaylight · 14/02/2024 21:06

I think you will find the thread gets skewed to those who have been to a lot, as the rest of us will read the numbers and get disheartened.

Mine have been to one.

Before 2020 we simply couldn’t afford it. As soon as we could start to afford it the covid years hit. 2020-23 they didn’t want to because of covid, and then anxiety over flying.

We are hoping to squeeze a couple more short family breaks in this year.
