How many countries have your teen dc visited?

madderthanahatter · 14/02/2024 20:12

I just posted on another thread saying we've travelled a fair bit and my dc19 said she's very grateful for this. I've just counted though and they've been to 8 non UK countries over 3 continents, which doesn't sound a lot. We've been to some countries twice, but different areas. I didn't include transit countries.
This is not a stealth boast BTW as we've always done it on the cheap, they've been taken out of school and our accommodation would leave most of MN pearl clutching!

Ireland
France
Italy
Belgium
Netherlands
Iceland
USA

At the same age I had been to:
Germany
Poland
Spain
Turkey

MackintoshGalore · 14/02/2024 21:18

Both DC have lived in 2 countries and been to at least 8 countries, some of them several times.

By the time I was their age I had been to probably at least double that number, and had included some pretty 'interesting' and hair raising adventures. My parents were, and still do, live for their travelling experiences.

Cheshiresun · 14/02/2024 21:20

My DC ages 11 and 8 have been to 32 countries. And more planned for this year and next.

I didn't think that was a lot, by today's standards. But a lot more than I had gone to at their age! I'd be able to count the number of countries I had visited on one hand by the time I was a teen.

France
Belgium
Luxembourg
Netherlands
Andorra
Spain
Italy
Austria
Germany
Denmark
Cyprus (Republic and Turkish zone)
And adding Czechia and Poland this year. They are 11&12.

Edited

The reason mine have a reasonably extensive list....

We lived in two of those countries for DHs work. And living in Germany gave us very easy access to the surrounding countries by car

Spain Italy and Andorra were separate holidays

This years trip is with Scouts.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 14/02/2024 21:25

DC is 18.

She has visited 19 countries outside of the UK. Will be at 21 before she hits her 19th birthday.

3 continents in total, but most of the countries to date have been in Europe - only 3 outside.

I can't fly, and we are in Scotland so euro tunnel is a bit far so we never really took ds(19) abroad except for once when he was 6 for a special family event. But he is starting to rack them up himself now.

With his friends

Australia, Thailand, Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Spain, USA, Ireland, Oman, Morocco, Egypt, Vietnam, Poland, Finland, Russia, Croatia, Iceland and Turkey. They’re in their late teens / twenties now and we have absolutely loved our family holidays.

Boomboomshakeshaketheroom · 14/02/2024 21:28

My list is boosted by the fact that DS1 was born overseas while I was living as an expat, and some of our holidays have been cruises which stop in multiple countries but only for a day or 2!

Australia
New Zealand
New Caledonia
Vanuatu
Indonesia
Singapore
Malaysia
Thailand
England
Scotland
France
Italy

Plus for DS1:
UAE
Egypt
Oman
Lebanon
China

AnEmbarrasmentofWitches · 14/02/2024 21:28

Wow. No wonder the climate is fucked.

fedupwithbeinghot · 14/02/2024 21:28

DS is 20 and he's been to many countries in 4 continents. I have not counted them but I reckon at least 25. I've always liked travelling and he's come with me everywhere

owlsinthedaylight · 14/02/2024 21:06

I think you will find the thread gets skewed to those who have been to a lot, as the rest of us will read the numbers and get disheartened.

Mine have been to one.

Before 2020 we simply couldn’t afford it. As soon as we could start to afford it the covid years hit. 2020-23 they didn’t want to because of covid, and then anxiety over flying.

We are hoping to squeeze a couple more short family breaks in this year.

Or just be smug that your carbon footprint is smaller as flying is the worst for the environment

AnEmbarrasmentofWitches · 14/02/2024 21:30

.. and yes, I am aware that air travel is only a part of the cause of climate change, but bloody hell, can’t you see that this is just insane?

This thread is so very depressing.

Cameraclick · 14/02/2024 21:31

When I was 18 I went to Greece and had also been to France and Majorca with family. France was camping and Majorca was in March in the rain- our first time on a plane too! We were gutted! I also went to italy with school. And Ireland with my friend. So 5 counties

my dc are 8 and 11 and have so far been to Spain, France, Greece and America. Would love to take them more places but I’m a teacher and school holiday prices are insane! I travelled in my 20s around the USA and loved it so will encourage my dc to travel when they’re young adults

HeyMicky · 14/02/2024 21:32

DD1 is 11 and has been to 11 countries - mostly Europe but also Barbados and Australia. DD2 is 8 and has been to 10

Groovy48592747 · 14/02/2024 21:33

Approximately 40. At a quick count up!

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 14/02/2024 21:35

My 13yo has been to Spain, France and Mexico.

Comedycook · 14/02/2024 21:36

What a thread...full of stealth boasting and privilege

Howmanysleepsnow · 14/02/2024 21:36

France
Spain
Italy
Croatia
Germany
Netherlands
Austria
Cyprus
Iceland
Portugal
Andorra

My younger 2 have been to all the above except Turkey and USA so 12

Howmanysleepsnow · 14/02/2024 21:38

Not really stealth though!

Groovy48592747 · 14/02/2024 21:41

Looks at the Royals and Celebrities if you want to be critical, who travel by private jet.

Ours is mostly due to work.
