Pathetic illegal migration Minister Tomlinson on Sky news being asked about the ex post office Chairman saying that he was asked to stall the compensation payments.
Asked twice

All he kept saying was "I can't comment on this as I haven't seen the story"

If little old me knows all about it, why the fuck doesn't he knows. Course he knows. He just doesn't want to answer the question

We're going to get a lot more of the...I haven't read the story...in the lead up to the GE

Trevor Phillips now asking him what labour square one is lol

This Tomlinson guy is awful. Very animated and getting angry and exceedingly defensive.

Roussette · 18/02/2024 08:51

Car crash interview. Trevor Phillips can barely keep a straight face with some of the stuff this minister is coming out with

IClaudine · 18/02/2024 09:03

Re: the by election turnout. Everyone knows that the voters most likely to turn out in any election are older voters and that they are the Tories core voters. The Tory vote turned out I bet and voted Reform or Labour.

IClaudine · 18/02/2024 09:21

Just watched clips from the interview, Rousette. He was aggressively defensive, wasn't he?

Every now and then he seemed to realise he need to dial it down a little and tried a weird sort of smile. The effect was quite chilling!

The panic is palpable.

IClaudine · 18/02/2024 09:25

Some tactical voting could get rid of the twerp:

You can play bingo with the Tory Minister on Laura K at the moment

I am doing an exercise in compare and contrast.

Trevor Phillips, Sky, held his feet to the fire and properly questioned him.

Now we have Laura Kuenssberg. Let's see where that takes us... will she ask .. 'what is square one?'

As my dear old Mum would say... oooh he seems like an angry young man!

cakeorwine · 18/02/2024 09:38

Vote for Reform
Low turnout

Just waiting for no plan, square one

Sorry! I posted then read your post...!

cakeorwine · 18/02/2024 09:39

Energy prices were going to fall.
So inflation was going to fall.

Can't anyone challenge that?

cakeorwine · 18/02/2024 09:41

Because of Albania - which is why crossings went down.

Does no one know their facts on TV?

Roussette · 18/02/2024 09:42

There are certain people in this world whose smiles do not reflect on their faces. He is deffo one of them. It borders on a grimace.

Talking about boats and Rwanda he actually gave Trevor Phillips a guarantee planes would take off...

cakeorwine · 18/02/2024 09:43

I think she just told him that crossings were up

cakeorwine · 18/02/2024 09:43

Bingo!!!

cakeorwine · 18/02/2024 09:45

I don't think he understands the question

Roussette · 18/02/2024 09:48

Haha yes! He is an eager young man isn't he....

Ahhh just looking him up, he was Deputy Chairman of ERG (European Research Group). Makes sense.

cakeorwine · 18/02/2024 09:48

Curious how there was no panel discussion afterwards.
I also think it would be interesting to look at how Laura finishes each interview with a Tory Minister versus a Labour one

(But maybe that's my biases)

Roussette · 18/02/2024 10:05

I agree.... trouble is LauraK has got form for this. Who can forget how sycophantic she was with Johnson, like a giggly school girl.

Notonthestairs · 18/02/2024 10:13

The Times suggesting that Conservative MPs stepping down could run to 100. And Richard Holden who was interviewed earlier this week would make a chicken run to a safe seat as many will become available between now and the election.

But this made me laugh -

"The assumption is that some Tories who fear the loss of their seats will jump before they are pushed by the electorate. However, one of those who said recently that they were going to quit told friends: “I’m not going because I think I’m going to lose, I’m going because I’m worried I might win.” They did not want to find themselves in a rump Tory party filled with “the nutters” who would be left after a big Labour win."

Wow. Stepping down because you’re scared of winning. That’s a new low.

Notonthestairs · 18/02/2024 10:46

Decent acknowledgment of what is likely to be left of the party in 2025 though.

I laughed but I don't rejoice in it - it means we'll lose more pragmatic non culture war voices (I believe the Conservatives still have a few of those). We all benefit when there is a range of sensible representatives & policies to listen to.

So someone senior from Department of Business instructs PO to drag their heels over compensation? To boost the Government financial records before the election - save the headache for the next government.

This has gone on years, people have died waiting. Drag their heels any more and they'd be in reverse!

And yet we can throw money at policies like Rwanda.

It needs to be taken out of the Governments hands.
Frankly a lot of things need to be taken out of the governments hands now - God knows what's going to come out of the woodwork after they've gone.

Someone senior from Department of Business

That would be Badenoch?

I'm sure there will be enough for plausible deniability.
But you might think that she's already responded - via a Business department source - suggesting Staunton had poor judgment and blocked an investigation in to Staunton behaviour (not entirely clear what the investigation was about). I assume Staunton was warned his reputation will be shredded and he decided to go ahead anyway.

Notonthestairs · 18/02/2024 11:00

For clarity Staunton said he was instructed to delay payments by a senior civil servant - not sure that means Minister although I'd assume CS & Ministers collaborate on such things.

DuncinToffee · 18/02/2024 11:02

Apparently the same happened with the contaminated blood scandal

https://x.com/cazjwheeler/status/1759154085402444250?s=20

The ex-Post Office chairman tells @olivershah that he was told to delay compensation for the victims of the Horizon scandal until after the election to help the Tories. I believe this what @JohnGlenUK had been told to do with the victims of the contaminated blood.
