Lightbulb moments; What are useful things you know that others may not you always remember?

I read yday on the speed awareness thread about not going higher than 3rd gear in a 30 to avoid speeding and that red roads are expensive and so only put where needed: noted both on my journey in town today.

Made me wonder what else like that others could share

My others are quite random

I read once that turning off the tap while you brush your teeth makes a big difference to water use. Since hearing that I always make a point of doing it

I am less religious about this one but to practise balancing in one leg when brushing teeth to help with balance as you get older (I am 46 so not decrepit yet)

Working as a waitress I learned to wipe wooden tables in the same direction as the grain to keep them streak free have always remembered ever since

Any more?

Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey when screwing/unscrewing things was a game changer for me.
I always mean to do the standing on one foot thing but always forget.

Hand sanitizer gel only works on clean hands and is not in fact a good substitute for soap and hot water. It is however surprisingly good at nuking the occasional zit! Just a tiny dab and only on the offending spot. Not a preventative measure at all but pretty good at shrinking the inevitable big red pimple right on your forehead the day before the 'the big thing'. At least enough that it's concealable

fromBodentoBandM · 12/02/2024 12:59

OMG is that true about the sanitiser?! 👀👀👀👀👀🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

Yes! Better if the strong hospital grade non fragranced kind! It's very drying so very much only for occasional use

helpfulperson · 12/02/2024 13:34

Cold water and soap is as effective as hot water and soap if done properly but people are much less likely to wash long enough or often enough unless water is warm.

No it’s not. Yes if your hands are visibly dirty then washing is best but hand gel is effective against many germs and bacteria and isn’t drying- in fact many gels are actually quite moisturising and don’t strip the skin of the moisture balance unlike soaps.

Never Eat Shredded Wheat (for North, East, South, West)

Spring Forward, Fall Back (for remembering whether the clocks go forward or back in the spring and autumn/fall)

If a jar won't open tap the edge of the lid firmly on a wall and it will help release the seal.

If drinking glasses are stuck together lightly tap them in the edge of something to separate them. Be careful to do it lightly though incase they break.

SusanSHelit · 12/02/2024 13:42

OK well I'll go and tell my hospitals infection control department that they're wrong and hand gel is as effective as soap then and they don't need to restock the moisturiser by the nurses station either because it's not drying. I'm sure they'll be delighted 🙄

Spring forward, fall back doesn’t work for me. It’s just as easy to spring back and fall forward and I’ve never been able to remember which way is correct.

Another tip for the jars is to use a bottle opener or even a fork under the edge of the lid as a lever. Game changer!

The fall bit means Autumn.
It's refers to the seasons .

I’m aware of that.
How does it help?

TheSlantedOwl · 12/02/2024 22:53

I guess you could think of Spring as optimistic, new shoots etc so forward looking?

Fallback is a word, fallforward isn’t - if that helps?!

It’s not one word in the ‘helpful’ saying though. Thanks for trying though!

To prevent tearing up when chopping onions leave the root end attached until the very last cut.

girlfriend44 · 12/02/2024 23:50

Pour boiling water over the lids too if you can't undo them.

If you get faeces on your fingers scrub them with toothpaste

if you are about to sneeze when driving (or at a funeral or hiding from murderers or whatever) press up on the underside of your nose, between the nostrils

keep a hammer in your glove compartment in case you need to get out (underwater or in a fire) and the doors won’t open
