Lightbulb moments; What are useful things you know that others may not you always remember?

I read yday on the speed awareness thread about not going higher than 3rd gear in a 30 to avoid speeding and that red roads are expensive and so only put where needed: noted both on my journey in town today.

Made me wonder what else like that others could share

My others are quite random

I read once that turning off the tap while you brush your teeth makes a big difference to water use. Since hearing that I always make a point of doing it

I am less religious about this one but to practise balancing in one leg when brushing teeth to help with balance as you get older (I am 46 so not decrepit yet)

Working as a waitress I learned to wipe wooden tables in the same direction as the grain to keep them streak free have always remembered ever since

Any more?

Not so useful now as plugs are moulded onto appliances, but when changing a plug, the bLLLLue wire goes to the LLLLeft, and the bRRRRown wire goes to the RRRRight.

Aaah! It's so obvious now you say that! If you'd have given me a plug, I'd have wired it correctly, but if you'd asked which side each wire should be on, I'd have been stumped.

If you get faeces on your fingers scrub them with toothpaste

if you are about to sneeze when driving (or at a funeral or hiding from murderers or whatever) press up on the underside of your nose, between the nostrils

keep a hammer in your glove compartment in case you need to get out (underwater or in a fire) and the doors won’t open

The prongs on the head rests in the front seats of cars are specifically designed to smash windows in an emergency. Of course that assumes you are sufficiently agile to remove them...

They don't pull out with the seat up, in our car.

Red-bellied black snakes would disagree with this!

They're not stripey though, are they?!

Hand sanitiser is a lifesaver for neutralising smelly armpits on a night out. GAMECHANGER.

To work out the temperature in Fahrenheit from centigrade- double it and add 27. So 25 degrees c be 77 degrees f etc.

But 0 degrees Celsius is 32 degrees Fahrenheit isn't it?
