Was this person rude?

I made an offer for an item on vinted. I first saw it listen a month ago for 100, I made an offer for 70. They rejected and said they've just rejected an offer of 85. I said sure okay.

Recently i noticed they've put it down to 90. So I remade my offer of 70. They came back and told me they'd rather cut it up and use it to wash their car than sell it to me for that price. I was taken aback, not what I was expecting at all. Was this person rude?

Actually I think you sound rude

Hoglet70 · 12/02/2024 11:46

They may have voiced it rudely but I do see their point. Your offer is still £20 less than what they are asking which is quite a lot....

Can you explain why?

I would have said the same as them.

Isnt that the point of making an offer? What % do people think is an acceptable haggle?

You dropped the price by over 20%!

Mosaic123 · 12/02/2024 11:51

They must be very keen on getting very close to the asking price. It's up to them.

It's certainly not a polite answer though.

I genuinely though that was acceptable. Hmm. I have had people accept 20% drops. Also when I sell, I do set my items priced at 20-30% wishfully. Doesnt everyone do this?

That's what I thought. Why are you getting upset at me haggling when that's the purpose of the website? It is also listed elsewhere with the option for making an offer. Logcially that would mean she wants offers! Did she expect people to ask for 5 pounds off?

IsaidIwouldAndIwill · 12/02/2024 11:53

Bloody hell, OP, to offer £20 under the asking price when it was already reduced from £100 is a bit much. I agree with the seller.

Gottseidank · 12/02/2024 11:54

They’d already rejected your offer. Making exactly the same offer again just because they’d lowered the price slightly was rude and makes you come across like a circling vulture.

xyz111 · 12/02/2024 11:54

Maybe they were annoyed with you as they already rejected your offer, said what they were looking for, and then you went ahead and did it again.

loobylou10 · 12/02/2024 11:55

@nutjobs because they'd already said 'no' to your offer. They may be open to the £85 now however, so that would be what I would Offer.

BranchGold · 12/02/2024 11:57

I think going in with the same, once rejected, offer was a bit of a waste of time on everyone’s part.

yes circling vulture is accurate

I think that's rude. It's just haggling on vinted, it's not personal.

LakeTiticaca · 12/02/2024 12:06

I have buyers offering much lower than asking price. I just decline. No snotty messages. Can I ask what the item is OP?

She rejected once politely, the second time she’s been snippy so you don’t waste her time offering the same again.

I did want to reply to her with that but she blocked me. I think it's haggling and everyone negotiates and accepts what they are comfortable with. I'm more used to the American version of Vinted (Poshmark) where I've never had an issue going in with a 20-30% offer. Maybe I was being a vulture-like someone so helpfully phased it in a previous comment. To me it's just good business.

It takes 30 seconds to look at an email/message. She could have even ignored me.

Crunchymum · 12/02/2024 12:19

Yes, the seller was rude.

They could very easily say they won't accept offers in the item description.

I always, always make an offer. Sometimes they are accepted (def a good 50% of the time) and other times they are ignored or declined or a counter offer is made. I've never had anyone be rude to me or block me. Essentially you are just using a function of the website?

I agree with you @nutjobs, if I listed something for £90 I wouldn’t see an offer of £70 as rude, I sell on eBay and Gumtree sometimes and people will make crazy low offers. I just tell them politely that I can’t do it for that. If you’d already offered I’d think ‘they obviously want this’ and try and meet you broadly in the middle.

I’m quite motivated to be rid of stuff I don’t want, having gone to the bother of listing; I’d rather have the money in my pocket but of course it’s up to them, it’s their item (I also think some people get annoyed they can’t get back what they paid!!)

TomeTome · 12/02/2024 12:25

Yes she could have ignored you, or taken a minute to read and reply more politely but she chose to try and shut down any future interaction if possible. It’s ok. She just doesn’t want to be haggled down in the way you want.
