Can’t believe what I’m reading, the fastest marathon runner in the world currently, most likely to beat 2 hours in the very near future and he’s gone 😢 Died in a car crash in Kenya. Utterly tragic

wondabar · 11/02/2024 23:24

So very tragic

FastAndLast · 11/02/2024 23:24

Aww no how sad 🥲

Sundaysunda · 11/02/2024 23:26

So shocked, I saw him run in London last year when no one really expected that sort of time from him. So sad we will never see what he would have done. His coach tragically died too 😢

Such sad news.

theconfidenceofwho · 11/02/2024 23:49

Just read that - so sad!

edwinbear · 12/02/2024 00:51

Tragic loss. He’d have got that sub 2hr marathon in April, then gone on to win Olympic gold in Paris. Pioneer of his sport gone in his prime 🥲

Sunshineandrainbow · 12/02/2024 01:06

Really sad news.

Gutted we won't see him in Paris.

Passthepickle · 12/02/2024 01:09

What a sad loss and a sad loss to sport too. An incredible athlete and coach pairing.

KyleWalkersLibido · 12/02/2024 01:13

Very sad news. An inspirational athelete

Can’t quite believe the fact we’ll never get to see it all now 😢 no one else will come close for a while

Also noticed that there’s virtually no mention of it on the news and breakfast tv this morning. If the top footballer in the world had died it would be a major story 🤔

Life is so cruel.

I'd never heard of him before today and probably lots of people are the same.

He really just came on most people’s radar at the London Marathon in April and has since won Chicago too and very nearly broke 2 hours. Kipchoge is a bigger name in running but Kiptum has now beat his marathon record

I woke up to five news alerts on my phone and two of them were about this.

SingingSands · 12/02/2024 09:26

An outstanding young runner, gone too soon. 💔

DRS1970 · 12/02/2024 09:29

Can't say I have ever heard of them, my loss I am sure. That sounds like a tragic loss for the sport - 2 hours is quite a feat. 😒

GiantPuffaJacket · 12/02/2024 09:57

I was so sad when I saw this on Facebook - only saw as I follow lots of running pages as you’re right- it’s not “big news” for the papers etc.
i looked at daily mail and their main story was Taylor kissing Travis. Shocking.

he was an amazing runner with an amazing career ahead of him. So sad. And for his coach.
such a shame :-(

edwinbear · 12/02/2024 10:21

It would have been quite something watching him vs Kipchoge in Paris.

Abhannmor · 12/02/2024 10:37

So young. He might have won multiple Olympics. Abebe Bekila was on course to win 3 when he was injured in a car crash too. RIP 🙏

Im guessing maybe the cars/roads where he trains in Kenya are very different from what we have in the UK too so possibly much more dangerous 😔

Shocking news Sad

BBC obituary: Kelvin Kiptum: The Kenyan marathon runner destined for greatness - BBC News

I disagree with the headline - I think he already had achieved greatness. But he had the potential to do so much more and I really wanted to see that happen

(not least I wanted to see him race Kipchoge and for them to pace each other to sub-2 hours - wouldn't have counted as pacing as both would have raced the full distance and could have led to something truly amazing)

RIP

He was an only child, and he leaves a widow Asenath Rotich and two DC

BananaPyjamaLlama · 12/02/2024 19:30
