Can’t believe what I’m reading, the fastest marathon runner in the world currently, most likely to beat 2 hours in the very near future and he’s gone 😢 Died in a car crash in Kenya. Utterly tragic

Incredibly sad.
Life can be so cruel.

It's an incredibly sad loss of young life and extraordinary sporting potential.

Shaving off seconds at the 2hr marathon was a phenomenal achievement. It's a heck of a running pace even at 5k, but sustaining it for 2 hours for over 42km is an incredible feat of human endurance.

Such sad news. RIP Kalvin.

Shocking news Sad

BBC obituary: Kelvin Kiptum: The Kenyan marathon runner destined for greatness - BBC News

I disagree with the headline - I think he already had achieved greatness. But he had the potential to do so much more and I really wanted to see that happen

(not least I wanted to see him race Kipchoge and for them to pace each other to sub-2 hours - wouldn't have counted as pacing as both would have raced the full distance and could have led to something truly amazing)

RIP

He was an only child, and he leaves a widow Asenath Rotich and two DC

gosh I didn’t realise he had kids 😞 heartbreaking!

I was so looking forward to seeing him and Kipchoge go head to head.

I agree that a lot of the posts I’ve seen were saying things about how he was a ‘rising star’ etc. He was in some aspects because he shot onto most people’s radar only last year but what he achieved between London and Chicago was more than literally anyone else has ever achieved in their long careers. I particularly loved the way his race in London was a bit all over the places with him constantly looking over his shoulder, missing his bottle then almost missing the corner to the finish and adding on another few seconds. It was noticeable when he ran Chicago that he had a better run overall but there was another big chunk off his time again, would be insane for most people to achieve that with years of work let alone a few months later! It was just the certainty that he definitely did have more to give that is so gutting 😢 I saw a video of the Chicago marathon finish line today of (presumably) his coach jumping up and down seeing him coming round the final turn. I couldn’t stop watching it just in disbelief that someone so fit could be gone within months 😞

It's absolutely devastating, I still can't believe it. Sending condolences to both their families. I've never been so upset about the passing of someone I don't know personally before, it's such a tragedy.

What a HUGE loss. I'm a runner and follow the pro athletes. I cannot express what massive potential he had. He was so likely to have broken 2 hours in Rotterdam in April. Unlike pretty much most other sports, marathon runners get better with age (to a point). He had years of growth ahead of him. Plus, he left a wife and two young kids 😭

xsquared · 12/02/2024 22:33

So young and talented, and just as he was getting his career going. I believe he would have broken sub 2 hours too.

Such a loss to the running community.

Condolences to his family.
