At work, local gov environment - we sat nattering on our desks and a colleague walked in from a client visit and wished one of my work-mates, "Congrats on your engagement

That was fine until my co-worker stuck out her hand to show of her diamond ring set in white gold I think it was.

The workmate who walked in said, "is that real." Honestly, she was being serious and had not noted what she had done by her insensitive comments

Have you got something to share that was insensitive?

OP posts:
StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 11/02/2024 16:33

Camille Grammer made a really rude comment about LVPs teeth on rhobh.

Wasitalwaysgoingtobelikethis · 11/02/2024 16:34

We are never going to be friends with people like them- I overheard and cringed a little for the ones who said it

TeapotCollection · 11/02/2024 16:37

Many years ago, my sisters MIL

I hadn’t seen her for ages, and to be fair I had put on a lot of weight. She didn’t recognise me, I had to explain who I was. With a shocked look on her face she said “You used to be thin, what happened?!”

Why is that insensitive?

Cuppachuchu · 11/02/2024 16:39

Similar. One colleague looked at my ring and commented that the diamond wasn't as big as another colleague's.
Some people have no concept of what is appropriate or polite, do they?
The worst comment I've heard was "you'd be quite pretty if you lost a bit of weight" and the recipient (a friend) answered, "you'd be quite nice if you weren't such a nasty bitch" 😲

Liverpool52 · 11/02/2024 16:40

When I explained to fellow student at uni that I wasn't going out that night with the course because my husband was home this weekend (works away alot) she looked me up and down (was wearing my usual jeans and blouse) and said "do you make an effort for when he gets home".

Booksandwine80 · 11/02/2024 16:40

A couple walking back from the school run talking about another mum “yeah she was wittering on about her couch to 5k and I just thought to myself I don’t think you (the husband/partner) give a shit about her piss pathetic 5k when you’re running marathons”

I was seething as I thought it was such a low blow 😢

I don’t understand how this was insensitive. If anything, I’d lean towards it being a compliment!

XenoBitch · 11/02/2024 16:47

One that was aimed at me. Left a pub, and everyone was hugging each other goodbye. One lady, who I considered a friend and I thought was pretty decent, hugged me and whispered into my ear "just because I am hugging you, doesn't mean I like you".

Waitingfordoggo · 11/02/2024 16:49

I used to have awful hormonal acne all over my chin for years. An elderly distant in-law said to me ‘It’s a shame; you could be so pretty if it wasn’t for all that’ (gesturing around his chin area).

Probably wouldn’t really say it was ‘bitchy’ as he was an elderly man but certainly very hurtful.

I don’t think the example in the OP is very bitchy at all- maybe just a bit crass. Depends on the tone I suppose.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/02/2024 16:50

Oh that is nasty @XenoBitch .

OP - I don't quite get your OP as to why that comment was particularly insensitive ?

rooftopbird · 11/02/2024 16:51

Asking if a huge engagement rock is real isn't insensitive to me if anything it's funny and I'd probably take it as a compliment.

I would anyway, but that's my personality, like 'wow yes I'm so lucky.

I sometimes wonder if jealous and insecure people find harm in innocuous comments because they're unhappy or simply not smart enough to understand humour.

WaystarRoy · 11/02/2024 16:53

i remember someone being asked if they had got their hair cut like that ‘on purpose’?

Dacadactyl · 11/02/2024 16:55

I agree with some of the others! If the OP is a bitchy comment then I'm guilty of many. I'd take it as a compliment.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/02/2024 16:56

"You look.about 4 months pregnant"
"Has everything gone back down OK?"

Dh grandparents to me when we visited post partum and I thought I looked ok

Held it together until we left then sobbed uncontrollably

Ha ha! Brilliant!

MedievalNun · 11/02/2024 17:00

Ex-friend 'hmm but you can't really consider yourself a proper mum can you as you had a c-section' (still in hospital at this point, DD in SCBU after not breathing & complications at birth). If I hadn't still been hooked to several lines myself hormonal me might have done something I probably wouldn't regret.

Gran, several years previously, when discussing potential careers ' have you thought about training as a secretary so you can be one for X (cousin) as it's probably the best you can manage'. Needless to say that didn't happen.

OMGitsnotgood · 11/02/2024 17:02

On my wedding day, a guest told me another friend's dress had been the same as mine - only hers was nicer material

Izzieloo · 11/02/2024 17:08

a friend said I love your top . I had one
like that absolutely loved it I gave it to the charity shop five years ago so yours has lasted well .

MrsMitford3 · 11/02/2024 17:15

I was heavily pregnant-actually gave birth the next day-and wearing a top I really liked-
My friend said the killer line "that top isn't as cute as you think it is" 😂

My friend's mum said, Oh my god you're so fat!

This after she just struggled losing a lot of weight herself. She wasn't slim mind.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 11/02/2024 17:20

My MIL said to my husband and I „women with grey hair look awful“ and pulled a disgusted face. Yes, thanks MIL, at least I have hair, you balding, dyed to death nightmare!!! (I didn’t say anything)

Drench · 11/02/2024 17:21

My new brother in law (although just the boyfriend at the time) said all 30ish old women go through a ‘farrow & ball phase’. Ffs actually I’m well into my 40s now and still enjoy their paint colours!

Ah, yes but LVP is no stranger to a nasty quip. The Malloof Hoof?
