General Election in May rumour

I heard this would be a possibility. Then saw an article today right down at the bottom of the topics on the DM website. I don't usually even scroll that far down. Can't see it myself as Tories not very popular. I will be voting Labour. Not that keen on them but certainly won't be voting Tory. Don't much like Greens or Lib Dems.

@StarDolphins Reform ? Communist party ? Depends what changes you want. I don’t know how you can criticise Labour before they’ve even won an election.

No point voting for a party that won’t get in!

We’ll see when Labour get in, I hope I’m wrong but confident I’m right!

They really don't. These are the actual rules. Required to work a minimum of 30 hours on NMW when your child is 3-12 and a minimum of 35 hours when child is 13+. Doesn't fit their narrative though.

In reality that doesn't happen though. The amount that a lone parent has earn work on UC is around £677 . If they earn this they get left alone and not encourages to work more hours. It's exactly the same old working minimal hors for maximum benefits as it has been for the last 25 years on the tax credit system. The threshold are meant to be rising at some point but everything with this government is done at snails pace, look how long it has taken to actually roll out UC and they still don't anticipate everyone will be migrated over until 2028. The whole benefits system needs serious reform. No one will do it though.

@EasternStandard he’s wrong and should be deselected. But the Tories don’t exactly have the moral high ground do they. He’s a bad apple like Peter Bone for example. Then again their supporters are scrabbling for anything to do the dirt on the opposition. Their record in government is appalling. God knows why you’re always on these threads defending them.

Well, that's a misrepresentation of Eastern's posting history if ever I saw one! I've never seen her defending the Tories.

I have seen you pedal whataboutery on threads discussing / about Labour though, badgering people to tell you what they think of the Tories.

Ha thanks

@EffieeBriest is a dedicated insulter

They seem overly hooked on it. I usually skip part it these days

WildFlowerBees · 12/02/2024 14:02

I wonder sometimes, the same thing happens over and over, Conservative, labour back to conservatives then Labour. Neither party does anything good for the vast majority, surely by now someone in politics could have found a moral compass, read the room and actually stood up for the majority and did something good. Instead history continually repeats itself. It's so tedious.

BIossomtoes · 12/02/2024 14:04

I've never seen her defending the Tories.

Haven’t you? You must be just about the only one.

EasternStandard · 12/02/2024 14:08

😂 if I had to guess who would post within the minute it would be @BIossomtoes

Equally dedicated 😬

EasternStandard · 12/02/2024 14:12

I usually avoid these full on Labour threads as it’s all bit nuts and people get angry if it’s not all pro

But that line earlier seemed to stand out given the Rochdale guy

I think Labour’s policies are poor, they are bloody slow but it seems they are realising it too finally with u turns

BIossomtoes · 12/02/2024 14:12

Totally dedicated. We both spend a lot of time on political threads, don’t we @EasternStandard?

EasternStandard · 12/02/2024 14:14

Dedicated to posting to me - I could have guessed you’d jump at that one. Fast 😂

I decline the reverse often

Never works though

Brilliant I look forward to no mention or response in the future

Sounds ace

Haven’t you? You must be just about the only one.

For the hard of thinking at the back, who insist on conflating agreeing with 1-2 Tory policies with supporting the Tories wholeheartedly (endemic amongst the hardcore Labour lot), your tactic just makes you look like you either have an agenda or just struggle with comprehension.

BIossomtoes · 12/02/2024 14:28

Amusing to see a one issue poster talking about others having an agenda @NoWordForFluffy. Of course Labour supporters have an agenda, we want to see the back of the Tories.

EasternStandard · 12/02/2024 14:29

I’ve been clear on what I think of the policies

Looks like Labour are slow on the uptake but already a major u turn on green spending, Nom Dom policy looks shaky

The numbers don’t stack up, it’s not that hard to see.

As do we. Shame Labour don't want our votes though.

Can't help yourself with the barbed swipes, can you? You really don't sell Labour with your attitude!

cardibach · 12/02/2024 14:39

eilaka · 12/02/2024 12:02

This is right.

I won't vote as nobody I could vote for is honest and competent.

There needs to be a "none of the above" box.

If you consider a major issue, such as the NHS, both conservative and labour say that they want to fix it, nurture it, prioritise it (or whatever shite they come out with). So what is the difference? They are both saying the same thing. But the NHS has got worse under both.

I mean Bojo ran his brexit campaign with that rubbish on the side of the bus about the NHS! Blair introduced NHS targets that ended up preventing people from booking doctor's appointments unless they were in the next 48 hrs. I remember a member of the public or a journalist or someone put this to him when he was somewhere taking questions - he had no idea that this was the unintended effect of his policy.

It amazes me that anyone would vote conservative or labour (or any of the others). They are all a bunch of cunts.

The NHS was rated no 1 in the world at the end of the last Labour tenure. It I. No way got ‘worse under both’.

Citrusandginger · 12/02/2024 14:48

There was an earlier discussion on the radio, suggesting an early election because Sunak doesn't want the distraction of the UK election taking place at the same time as the US for reasons of world stability.

I'm sorry but that's BS isn't it? Sunak's priority is clearly the Sunak clan'+ the rich in-laws, not world wide stability. And I would have thought the clowns across the pond would be a helpful distraction.

scorpiogirly · 12/02/2024 16:01

I don't know who I will vote for but it sure as hell won't be Labour!

Labour did loads of good things (and some crap things obvs) between 1997 and 2010. The NHS was in much, much better shape. We had Sure Start. There was a lot more help available for disabled people. All trashed by the Tories.

It will take a very long time to repair the damage, so initially Labour won't be able to improve things much.

And yet people will insist they're all as bad as each other!

We didn't even have as many potholes under Labour

IClaudine · 12/02/2024 17:33

An illustration of the health of the NHS just after Labour left power and before the disastrous Lansley reforms and now:

In January 2024 54,308 patients had a 12 hour wait to be admitted to A&E.

In January 2020 it was 2847.

In January 2015 it was 650.

In January 2011 it was 17.

HRTQueen · 12/02/2024 17:34

Labour did invest more into the NHS

much of this was through PFI’s that cost the NHS a substantial amount out of their budget to pay back

The simple fact is that we do not pay enough to run the NHS as it is so either it’s cut services back or look at a different system

I wish one of the main parties would be brave enough to be honest but they are too afraid to lose voters. A cross party committee should be set up to manage the changes that have to take place but both use the NHS as a political football to gain votes.

I have no more faith in Labour than I do the Tories for saving the NHS because money shouldn’t wasted trying to save a system that is no longer working we deserve better
