Would we fit in near you?

Hi,

my partner and I are trying to figure out where to move to and we are so confused! We just keep going in circles and then feeling really defeated. So I was wondering if MNetters of the uk could recommend your area or an area you know that might work for us…

I hope we don’t come off too badly here… I get really nervous posting questions like this!

I’ll try to keep it brief, but this is our situation:

we’re late 30s, have two under 5s, we’re academic, work in education/ arts and I think we’re in that “middle earners” bracket, we’re first time buyers and our budget is about 700,000. Both dp and I are neurodivergent, we currently live in a nice part of north London and have found the city more accessible than the countryside, where we both grew up. We love the culture in London: galleries, independent cinemas, etc and the huge choice of ways to spend time. We like the idea of raising our children here.

that said, we love the countryside and go there a lot at weekends and for holidays. I grew up on a farm and loved that aspect of childhood. I always thought I’d move back when I had children. Part of me would like my children to grow up there. Our budget also goes further and the places we can afford often seem a lot nicer.

we can’t stay living where we are for much longer as our rental is tiny and once we go we are totally priced out of our current area.

Our criteria is typically impossible to fulfill: we want to be walkable to wild feeling green space, have good state schools nearby, have an interesting high street or town centre within 15 minutes drive or walk (bookshops, cinemas, cosy pubs, swimming pool). We would like to be able to commute into central London once a week for work and at weekends a couple of times a month as a family (although this isn’t essential). We’d like to be within a three hour drive of Bristol for family. We’d like to live somewhere fairly pretty. Good transport links for the children as they get older.. we’re after a 3 bed with a garden. A drive way would be a huge pro. And we’d like to fit in. Where we live at the moment is very pretty, but we’re surrounded by the mega wealthy and have found it hard to make friends.

I fully realise we’re asking for a lot and we will have to compromise.

Id just love to hear some positive stories of people like us who have managed to find “home”

we’re open to all parts of London and the surrounding countryside. We’ve also looked further afield including Cornwall and Cumbria.

thanks in advance 🙂

Look at Pewsey, Hungerford, Marlborough triangle in Wiltshire.

I was going to suggest Marlborough as well.

Or somewhere like Malmesbury or Tetbury.

Firecrest19 · 11/02/2024 19:01

Wow - this is amazing! Thank you so much everyone. A huge amount to look into here. I’m making a spreadsheet. I really appreciate all this feedback xx

Middle earners but have 700k budget as a first time buyer? I think you need to re evaluate your idea of middle earners.

Fair point. We have a large deposit as we’ve both been working for twenty years near enough and are good at saving. We can borrow about 350

We live in Bath- you would definitely fit in

I like that Bath has come up. We have looked here in the past but at the time wanted to stay in London. It’s so pretty.

Oxford or Cambridge are great places to live if you are culture vultures.

We’d love Oxford or Cambridge but have been priced pot when we’ve looked before… we both used to live in Cambridge and loved the city

Horsham would be good for you.

We were quite excited by Horsham, although I looked it up on MNand it had quite a bad write up… we’re planning on visiting though as we love the countryside around it and it looked really pretty…

Unfortunately what they want is Stroud 10 years ago, very little left now! Although we do still have some independent bookshops and nice pubs I suppose. I’d recommend the villages around Stroud rather than Stroud itself, then you can come in for the markets or when there’s interesting events on and avoid it the rest of the time.

This made me smile as I lived in Stroud for a year 20 years ago!

I was going to recommend the Northern Highlands, near Inverness, til I saw you really want to be nearer London and Bristol. There are some great suggestions here - how exciting to be at the beginning of your family life and about to make a big move to somewhere your kids will thrive. Good luck in your search 😊

This is so nice. Thank you!

Saffron Walden - outstanding secondary school, great primary schools, on the edge of countryside and commutable to London. Gorgeous town centre, cinema at the high school and swimming pool. 20 mins from Cambridge also!

@firecrest19 I spoke of York further up the thread and its advantages with it only being 2 hours to King's Cross.

This is a link to a three bed/2 bathroom below, which will give you an idea on York.

There are also a lot of outlining villages like Barmby Moor North Yorkshire, which are idyllic to live in as it's between York and Pocklington surrounded by fields.

That may interest too, which is cheaper still. Barmby about 20 mins from York. It's a quintessential English village

Do come back and let us know where and what you decide, please? Good luck

Bath. You can get family houses for your budget. Small city with loads of culture and academics! Lovely state schools, commutable to London and close to bristol. Oh and you can see the countryside from the city centre. There are also lovely villages within and close to the city, eg larkhall, batheaston. You might also like frome?

I'd say Bath too. Everything you said would suit Bath.

Have a look at Stroud in Gloucestershire

I was going to say Stroud

magicscares · 11/02/2024 21:09

Hove. South Downs & central Brighton (& the beach) really accessible. Excellent schools (primary & secondary).

Onlyvisiting · 11/02/2024 21:09

What about devon? If you want to stay close to city amenities (small one!) Exeter is handy to train route, can also get trains to okehampton or drive for pretty close access to dartmoor. Def not the land of the uber rich and it has a university if that is useful for work.

kirinm · 11/02/2024 21:11

South east London? Telegraph Hill / Nunhead.

Not impossible in East London. This is close to your budget.

If you need any motivation to leave London then this is it. 800k for what is quite frankly a dump of a house overlooked by neighbours.

Spend an hour on Rightmove and see what you can get for that sort of money elsewhere in the country. Your standard of living would go through the roof if you moved.

A house like that would be 250k in most areas.

followingthebreath · 11/02/2024 21:54

What about East Suffolk? Woodbridge?

DrCoconut · 11/02/2024 22:48

Doesn't meet your criteria but you could buy nearly half my street with that budget!

Yellowtrouser · 11/02/2024 23:06

Warwickshire - Leamington or Warwick. Nice town centres, easy access to local countryside. Approx 1.5 hrs to London Marleybone. Lots of families and good state schools, just check out catchment areas as the best are oversubscribed but with your budget you would be fine.

smithy153 · 12/02/2024 08:44

Hertford fulfills most of your wish list. And just a bit further north from your current location. Multi million pound theatre revamp near completion. Pretty little town with great state schools on the doorstep. Surrounded in countryside. Your budget would get you a 3-bed with driveway. Loads of young families who have made the move from London for the good schools, green spaces etc.

Horsham is very good for raising families in. They often do trails around the town during school holidays .There is also surprisingly cheap childcare options during school holidays and a forest school type one too. There is regular ND group meet ups if that is your sort of thing.

Gosh. Thank you. It’s very sobering to hear this - I think looking at London property creates a very skewed idea of what houses cost. We’ve honestly always felt we had a low budget compared to friends but I guess it’s all relative. It would be amazing not to have to spend 700 on a property! As that would literally be our life savings and then some.

Thank you. I’ve visited York and loved it. I worry it would be a bit too far from our parents as they grow older. If it wasn’t for family in the south then a move north would be a no brainer!

This would be a decent option for you here in Bath OP at£475000 and 4 bed it's hugely in budget and good interior too with room to grow into- it's not the poshest bit of town but it's not rough either
